Introduction / Overview
For Mainers seeking a truly distinctive camping experience that blends coastal beauty, historic atmosphere, and convenient access to Acadia National Park, Quarry Ledge Campground on Mount Desert Island (MDI) is a must-visit destination. Situated directly on Somes Sound—the only natural fjord on the East Coast of the United States—this campground offers a unique environment where the rugged granite history of Maine meets the tranquility of the Atlantic coast. The campground’s name is derived from the historic granite quarry on the property, which was once instrumental in providing the stone for Acadia’s iconic infrastructure, giving the area a fascinating and rooted sense of place.
Quarry Ledge Campground prides itself on being a peaceful basecamp away from the major crowds of Bar Harbor, yet its central location on MDI makes exploring the entire island easy. The site provides a range of accommodations, from spectacular waterfront tent sites to modern RV hookups, all supported by exceptionally clean and well-maintained facilities. Guests frequently highlight the spotless restrooms and the friendly, accommodating nature of the staff, like Lisa in the office, who ensure a welcoming and kind atmosphere. Whether you’re launching a kayak into the sound or taking a refreshing dip in the heated pool, Quarry Ledge offers a comfortable, picturesque, and memorable Maine outdoor escape.
Location and Accessibility
Quarry Ledge Campground is strategically located at 5 Spinnaker Way, Mt Desert, ME 04660, USA. This address places it directly on Mount Desert Island in the Mount Desert/Hall Quarry area, affording campers unparalleled access to the region’s best attractions.
The location’s key advantage is its central position on MDI, making it easy to reach various points of interest on both the popular Bar Harbor side and the quieter Southwest Harbor side of the island. Being "out of the fray" of the main Bar Harbor tourist zone, guests appreciate the quieter atmosphere while still having a short, convenient drive to hiking trails, Jordan Pond, and Bar Harbor's downtown shops and restaurants. Most significantly, the campground offers immediate shore access to Somes Sound, allowing for direct water-based activities like kayaking, paddle boating, and saltwater fishing right from the property. This proximity to the water is a powerful draw for those seeking the quintessential Maine coastal experience. The site is a perfect, easy-to-navigate hub for local Mainers looking to explore Acadia’s vast network of hiking and biking trails without the constant traffic of the more congested areas.

Quarry Ledge Campground is uniquely suited for residents of Maine because it provides a quiet, centrally located, and beautiful gateway to Acadia National Park that honors the state’s rugged coastal identity. For locals who already know the MDI area, this campground offers a highly valuable alternative to the crowded national park sites and the congested Bar Harbor scene. It allows Mainers to easily access the hiking trails and attractions they love while offering a peaceful retreat at the end of the day.
The ability to access Somes Sound directly from the property—the very essence of Maine’s spectacular fjord coast—for fishing, paddling, or simply enjoying the view, provides an unparalleled coastal experience. Moreover, the campground's dedication to cleanliness and friendly, accommodating staff, as highlighted by numerous local users, ensures a high-quality, comfortable stay. Absolutely loved this campground! It was quiet, peaceful, clean, restrooms spotless and staff was friendly, accommodating and welcoming. My son loved the pool and pedal boat. Shore access area was stunning. Hookups are a little awkward and dated but workable.
Sep 22, 2025 · Melissa TerryReally really wanted to love this place: Lisa in the office was sweet and kind, the quarry is cool, kids like the pool and made good use of it and it was quite clean, as were the bathrooms and fire pits. The location makes it easy to get to places on both sides of the island and it was out of the fray of the Bar Harbor area. Having water at the site was great & made cleaning after meals and before bed easy, our site was near the water which was beautiful. I’m not a fan of gravel campsites because of the dust and grit so I’d recommend having something down in front of your tent just so you don’t track all the dust and grit into your tent, but that’s just me. However — what made it miserable is that we stayed there days after a new generator had been installed on the property immediately adjacent to our part of the campgrounds… and it was LOUD loud, 24 hours of noise. You could barely hear the loons at night. You wanna know how loud? We actually drove down the road to that house and the old guy who had rented it said he was half deaf and it was driving him nuts, too. He had stayed there before as had several people in our campsite down by the water and they were all really unhappy. It’s the house right by and below site 10 and Starfish cabin. So, you’ve been warned: if you are at site 10 or anywhere else towards the water from then on (we were at Castaway), you will be sorely disappointed and frustrated in your attempt to bask in the silence and beauty of the Somes Sound. Which was the whole darn point of getting out camping for me :( Please make sure you ask before booking, I know the office was trying to solve it, but who knows if they can, and I wouldn’t want anyone else to trek out there and then sit by their campfire at night upset at the utterly inconsiderate noise pollution. We stayed at the end of July. Would definitely consider going again if that were solved. Otherwise, never again.
Jul 30, 2025 · Judith MeerWe are just arriving home from spending 9 nights at Quarry Ledge. We went in our Grand Design travel trailer and had the best experience. Our site was private and the accommodations were immaculate. The campground is so pretty with a quarry and even an oceanfront view a few steps away! We can't say enough for the staff, especially Analee. She was so kind, helpful, patient AND even helped us empty our tanks because it was our first RV experience! We hope to be back next summer!
Aug 02, 2025 · Elise McCannStayed here for about a week on one of the deluxe platforms and it was great. The bathrooms were clean, the amenities were cool, and the office was nice. It's a little aways from Acadia and doesn't have a bus stop so we just ended up parking at the welcome center and taking the bus, which was about a 20 minute drive away. But it was worth it and the price was great.
Aug 19, 2025 · Katrina NillesThis is a fantastic campground located very close to Acadia National Park. It was previously known as HTR Acadia Somes Sound Campground but is now under new management and renamed Quarry Ledge. If you can’t find a spot on recreation(dot)gov, definitely check this place out. Here are my observations: Pros - Utilities: Most sites have both electricity and water (unless otherwise noted). The riverfront sites are a short walk away and don’t have electric hookups. - Clean Facilities: Bathrooms and restrooms are spotless and well maintained. - Wi-Fi Access: Free, campground-wide Wi-Fi (no password) is available—very handy in emergencies. - Big-Rig Friendly: Even large Class A RVs like Brinkley models can fit through the back entrance. The office staff will guide and escort you to your site if needed. - Stargazing Spot: There’s a small quarry in the center with an unobstructed sky view—perfect for stargazing at night. - Amazing Staff: Special thanks to Lisa at the office for her kindness! She offered to watch our 10-month-old Golden Retriever when he got nervous around the beach so we could enjoy kayaking. Cons - Small Tent Sites: Tent sites are on the smaller side compared to other campgrounds, though fine if your setup isn’t too large. - Tight Spacing: Sites are close together—only about 5 feet between them. If you have early-to-bed neighbors, noise can be an issue. (We had a neighbor ask us to lower our mini speaker even at half volume, while others had outdoor TVs without issue.) - Porta Potty Design: Porta potties are available throughout the campground but are old-style models without closing caps on the septic tank, making them a bit uncomfortable to use. - Slow Wi-Fi: The free Wi-Fi slows down significantly when the campground is full, especially on weekends, with many RVs streaming movies.
