For Mainers dreaming of a quintessential coastal escape that combines the rugged beauty of Acadia National Park with the comfort of a full-service resort, the Bar Harbor / Oceanside KOA Holiday presents a compelling destination. Located directly on the shores of Mount Desert Island (MDI), this campground is more than just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent—it’s a comprehensive basecamp for exploring the natural wonders of the region.
As a designated KOA Holiday, it is known for providing a wealth of amenities and recreational activities, catering especially to families and groups. Its prime location on the Western Bay gives guests direct access to the ocean shoreline, offering stunning sunset views, tide pool exploration, and easy launching for kayaks and paddleboards. The resort provides a diverse array of lodging, from traditional tent sites to full-hookup RV spots and fully-equipped Deluxe Cabins, ensuring options for almost every style of Maine traveler.
While the resort environment can be energetic and busy during peak season, which sometimes leads to higher density and occasional issues with site availability or customer service—as noted by some travelers—its exceptional proximity to the island's main attractions remains its greatest asset. It is an ideal spot for those who value convenience, ocean access, and a wide selection of on-site features to complement their Acadia experience.
The Bar Harbor / Oceanside KOA Holiday is situated at a strategic point on Mount Desert Island, making it highly accessible for both local and visiting explorers.
The official address is 136 County Rd, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, USA. Crucially, the campground is located almost immediately after crossing the causeway onto MDI, providing quicker access compared to campgrounds deeper into the island’s interior. It boasts 3,500 feet of its own waterfront on the Western Bay, ensuring that the beautiful Maine coast is just steps away for many guests.
Accessibility to the main attractions is simplified by a key feature: the free Island Explorer bus service stops directly at the campground’s entrance. This free, convenient shuttle connects the resort to downtown Bar Harbor, the ferry terminal, and all the major points of interest within Acadia National Park, including the Park Loop Road, Jordan Pond, and Cadillac Mountain. For Mainers looking to avoid the intense summer parking crush and traffic on MDI, the shuttle access from the KOA is an invaluable tool for stress-free exploration. Additionally, the location is minutes away from local amenities like a gas station and take-out dining options.
As a full-service KOA Holiday resort, the Bar Harbor / Oceanside KOA provides a comprehensive list of services and amenities designed to enhance guest comfort and convenience.
The array of recreational features at this KOA Holiday makes it a highly appealing choice for families seeking an interactive camping vacation.

This resort is perfectly suitable for Maine families and RV owners who appreciate the reliability and structure of a major camping brand, alongside unparalleled access to MDI’s treasures. The location on the Western Bay is not just scenic, providing beautiful sunsets and the unique opportunity to explore tide pools right at your campsite, but it is also exceptionally practical. The presence of the Island Explorer shuttle stop is a game-changer for locals familiar with the traffic congestion in Bar Harbor and Acadia. It eliminates the hassle of searching for parking and allows for maximum enjoyment of the park.
While the resort environment is active, and some reviewers have noted challenges with service and site leveling, the trade-off is the sheer volume of amenities—the Lobster Cafe, the playground, the organized activities—that keep a multi-generational family fully engaged. For a Mainer seeking a convenient, amenity-rich, and ocean-accessible base for their Acadia adventure, the Bar Harbor / Oceanside KOA Holiday remains one of the top choices on Mount Desert Island.

I stayed with my family in one of the rustic cabins for almost a week. The location is beautiful, right on the water and we enjoyed the sunsets and the kids loved the tide pools. We also loved the bike rentals, playground and gaba ball area. The cabins themselves were nice and adequate for our needs, I do wish there was a bit more space they are quite crowded in. Also didn’t love all the smoking happening of various substances, not a fan of smelling pot while trying to roast marshmallows with my kids in the evening. I didn’t see non smoking signs anywhere so assumed this is allowed and maybe it’s common in the area. We are from an area of the country where we rarely encounter this issue so it was unexpected. Bathrooms were clean enough although on weekends it could have done with an extra clean. Overall we found the staff to be unfriendly and some quite rude, especially the front desk. They were rude to one another and also to me. I noticed a double charge on our bill they tried to tell me it wasn’t there and then after fixing it just handed me a receipt with no explanation or apology. RUDE. I would personally look around at other options before booking here again.
Sep 17, 2025 · Rachel GreenStayed here labor day weekend 2025, and to say its was a complete and utter disappointment would be an understatement. For years my wife has wanted to stay at this campground and when we finally made it happen it was such a disappointment. We booked our stay in March 2025, and reserved an ocean front back in site water electric. We arrive and they have is in a pull through across from the Ocean Front site we booked water and electric. My wife called the office to see if a mistake was make and Brenda at the office implied that my wife had no idea what she had reserved even though we had an email confirmation showing we had reserved an ocean front site. Brenda then completely dismissed my wife saying well we don't have any available anyway. There was no attempt to make this right whatsoever. We understand booking issues arise but for no communication prior to our arrival of the change was frustrating especially since we would have chosen a full hookup site had we been informed of the unavailability of an ocean front site. Our site was incredibly unleveled causing us to be unable to use the main entrance to our camper requiring our guests to walk through our bedroom to gain access to the bathroom and living room of our camper. We had emailed the campground about the experience as their handout requested to contact them before writing a bad review. Well it's over two weeks later and no one has responded to my wife's email. I would strongly recommend you skip this KOA they certainly do not care about your experience just your money!
Sep 16, 2025 · Joe MedinaOne of my happy places. Amazing views, love being able to wander the tidal areas during low tide. Great location for access to Acadia and Bar Harbor area. Windy at times right on the ocean, fair warning. Good sized sites, could be a bit more level. Bath houses, laundry could be nicer/cleaner. Big dog park, but it was frequently nasty from folks not cleaning up after their pets. Shame on them, but the campground should have someone do doggy duty more frequently.
Aug 30, 2025 · Matt WeasnerWe loved this camp ground. The employees were so kind when we checked in! However, the woman cooking lobsters was extremely rude. As well as the woman making breakfast the next morning. Maybe just a bad day for both. Food was great. We were also 15 minutes behind leaving as we had an issue with one of our slides. We had an employee waiting on our campsite 5 minutes after 11:00am for us to leave. We get checkout is at 11 but to be sitting there watching us was odd. We were out of there by 11:15. By the time we were finished hooking up our truck he was already done checking our site. It seemed unnecessary and only doing it to make a point. Great spot and amenities. I wish they would enforce the speed limit a little more. We witnessed a few close calls.
Sep 01, 2025 · Meghan LevesqueNice location. The sites were small, right on top of each other, and not very level (at least ours wasnt). The big problem is very limited sites with sewer hookups. This is made worse by limited showers and bath facilities and most of the time there was no hot water! They offered honey wagon service but it was $15 per tank to use the service. Another thing is the water was very salty tasting and we have a big cartridge type whole house filter.
