Introduction / Overview
For Mainers looking to explore the natural splendor of Mount Desert Island (MDI) without the intense crowds of Bar Harbor, Smuggler's Den Campground in Southwest Harbor offers the ideal sanctuary. Known affectionately as the "Quiet Side" of MDI, this family-owned and operated gem, established in 1969, provides a relaxed, meticulously maintained environment bordering the serene beauty of Acadia National Park. The name itself, "Smuggler's Den," hints at the secluded and peaceful atmosphere that loyal visitors have come to love.
Smuggler's Den is far more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s a full-service vacation destination designed to make your stay both comfortable and memorable. Visitors frequently praise the extraordinary attention to detail, from the beautifully manicured grounds, featuring quaint apple trees, to the spacious, level sites that ensure a hassle-free setup. The dedication of the owners and staff to providing caring, compassionate, and highly attentive service—often cited by customers—propels this campground to the top of many local favorites lists. With a fantastic array of amenities, including recently added luxurious bathhouses, Smuggler’s Den ensures a high-quality, nature-rich experience for all ages.
Location and Accessibility
Smuggler's Den Campground is perfectly positioned at 20 Main St (Route 102) in Southwest Harbor, ME 04679, USA. This location on the southern, less-traveled side of Mount Desert Island—the “Quiet Side”—is a tremendous asset for Mainers seeking a peaceful retreat while retaining convenient access to all MDI attractions. It successfully balances quiet solitude with excellent connectivity.
The campground's greatest local accessibility feature is its direct proximity to Acadia National Park. Campers can access over 25 miles of Acadia’s hiking trails and fire roads right from the campground property, allowing for walks to stunning natural spots like Echo Lake Sand Beach (about a 20-minute walk). Southwest Harbor’s quaint, working harbor is only 1.5 miles away, offering dining and local services.
For those wishing to visit the more active areas, the famous Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is just a 10-minute drive, and Bar Harbor and the Acadia National Park Visitor Center are about a 20-mile scenic drive. Critically, Smuggler's Den is a designated stop for the free Island Explorer Shuttle bus, which runs from late June through early October, allowing guests to visit various points across MDI without the stress of parking, which is a significant advantage for locals familiar with the island's summer traffic.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Smuggler's Den Campground is perfectly suitable for Mainers because it offers an upgraded, yet authentic, Maine experience in one of the state's most coveted regions: Mount Desert Island. For local residents, the campground solves the perennial problem of summer crowding on MDI. By providing a comfortable, full-amenity base on the "Quiet Side" of Southwest Harbor, locals can enjoy the hiking, scenery, and coastal charm of Acadia National Park while retiring each night to a peaceful, spacious, and family-oriented setting that is safely off the main tourist artery.
The combination of high-end features like the new, clean bathhouses and the simple, yet essential, joys of Maine camping—like buying fresh lobster at the camp store and walking to a lakeside beach—makes this a truly exceptional regional resource. It’s a place where Mainers can relax knowing they are receiving top-tier hospitality from a long-standing, dedicated family operation, making it the number one camping destination for those who appreciate comfort, convenience, and genuine local care.

Smuggler’s Den is one of the nicest campgrounds we have ever stayed in. The sites are spacious and each one has a fire ring and picnic table. The sites are level and the one we had was concrete. Lots of shade, very pet-friendly, and so many amenities! The new bathhouse is luxurious! There are cabins, park model rvs, and apartments to rent. The campground is located close to all the sites in Southwest Harbor and is a short drive from Bar Harbor and Northeast Harbor, but off the main road so traffic noise is not an issue. Lots of hiking trails and the staff is wonderful. I can’t say enough about how friendly and helpful everyone there is. Highly recommend and will definitely stay here again if we’re in the area.
Sep 26, 2025 · Tammy LeemanSmuggler's Den Campground is synonymous with the description of the campground and is indeed a hidden gem. We spent 5 glorious days there and it was magnificent to say the least in September 2025. The staff were so accommodating and attentive to our needs. Kim and Cheryl were the best. Reign and Troy, the owners were so caring, compassionate and considerate to our needs. We made our reservations after hours and they created a site for us which in our opinion is the best site. It is secluded, quaint, quiet and encapsulated between beautiful trees, deer can be seen appearing often piercing thru the wooded area. Site number 16 will be our choice when we visit our favorite city in Maine, which is Bar Harbor. We will make sure our reservations are made around the availability of site number 16. The campsite has beautiful apple trees aligned throughout the trails, games for adults, children's playground, and a beautiful swimming pool. Also, a newly built shower house that's spa-like and soothing. Even if you have your own accommodations, we utilized this beautiful shower. It is located in a tranquil setting where apple trees are nestled among the trees that are beautifully pruned. As we were walking throughout the campground, we were choosing which tree we wanted for Christmas, that's how beautiful, clean and manicured this campground is maintained. Smuggler's Den is our favorite campground that we have ever seen and that's quite a lot because we have visited many campgrounds. The service alone with the attentiveness from the owners and staff have propelled Smuggler's Den to our number one camping destination.
Sep 25, 2025 · Peggy Huff JohnsonAmazing campground - one of the best we’ve ever been. Nice spots for tents, large grass field for games, kids playground, heated pool and great new updated showers and restrooms. Once the refurbish also the other shower house, it would be awesome. We spent 3 beautiful nights and enjoyed the campground a lot.
Aug 22, 2025 · Ondrej FridrichOne of the best! Grounds are well kept. Staff are friendly and well informed of near by attractions. Great price! Clean showers and bathrooms. Close enough to Bar Harbor.
Sep 21, 2025 · Nicole SThis was a great campground! We had a cement pad site, full hookups. It was quiet and very clean. The only objection I have is the constant shuttle bus coming into the campground, at least 10x’s/ day. If you’re in one of the site ms close to the entrance you’ll experience this. Why can’t it stop at the top of the entrance and drop off and pickup there? Everything else was great!! We will definitely be back!!
