For Mainers who cherish the rugged beauty of the Atlantic coast and the serenity of a genuine Downeast camping experience, Bass Harbor Campground is a truly exceptional destination. Located on the quieter, southwestern side of Mount Desert Island (MDI), this campground offers a peaceful and friendly alternative to the often-crowded areas near Bar Harbor, providing an authentic base for exploring Acadia National Park. Run by the welcoming Carsey family, this spot is dedicated to offering a comfortable and well-equipped stay for all types of campers, from those in large fifth wheels to families pitching a tent or staying in a cozy cabin.
The campground is praised by local users for its excellent value, especially when compared to other options on MDI, making it a great choice for Maine families looking to maximize their vacation budget. It strikes a perfect balance: nestled in a quiet, wooded setting with shade trees and a pleasant, calm atmosphere, yet it remains incredibly close to major attractions. Customers frequently comment on the friendly staff and the clean, well-maintained facilities, ensuring a pleasant and worry-free stay as you embark on your Acadia adventures. Whether you're interested in the area’s maritime history, coastal hiking, or simply relaxing by a campfire, Bass Harbor Campground provides the ideal setting.

We stayed in our camper. The site had full hook ups and was large enough for our large 5th wheel. Our site had shade trees, fire ring and was quite. The employees were all very pleasant. The location is about a mile from Acadia hiking and a half mile from Bass Harbor Light house.
Sep 24, 2025 · Rusty SmithGreat place to enjoy Acadia NP. Easy to find, close to light house and restaurants. Hosts are very friendly and the price was really good compared to every other campground. Clean bathrooms and showers. A lot of other amenities for the family, but we were there to just see the park. Highly recommend.
Sep 17, 2025 · Randy OlingThis was such a sweet little cozy campground! We spent half of our stay on Mt. Desert Island at this campground. The facilities were all really clean, the campground employees were SO kind and helpful (shout out to Sarah at the front desk who suggested a couple of the best activities we did during our visit, and Mike who helped us trouble shoot our RV!), and it was so conveniently located to explore the southern end of the island. The only thing to note which didn't bother us too much is the sites are on the smaller side and very close together, so it isn't super private. Overall, we loved our stay and we hope to come back and check out either the yurts or tent sites next time!
Sep 08, 2025 · Alexandria MeyerhoferOverall, this was a very quiet and clean campground. Everyone was super nice and polite (staff and campers). Bathrooms were clean for the most part. The only real issue i had was my site (and most sites around us) was on the small size and had several stumps that made it annoying for our large tent (family of 6). Outside of that, due to its location and all other factors, its a fantastic little gem to get away from the crowds closer to bar harbor.
Jul 12, 2025 · Jesse MetzlerA great campground right near a lighthouse and Acadia National Park. They have bathrooms, showers, camp store, and even a dishwashing station outside their bathrooms. I got a site in the back, with electric, and it was perfect for my week-long stay. They also have a pool, a rec room and a little playground, perfect for the kiddos. Loved being able to walk to the lighthouse and having an easy drive to Acadia! The staff were also so nice and pleasant, this will definitely be on my list for campgrounds I'd stay at again.
