For South Dakotans seeking a camping experience that goes beyond the ordinary, River of the Double Bend Campground in Trent offers a truly distinctive atmosphere. This is not just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it's a vibrant, community-oriented campground where people connect, relax, and create lasting memories. Located at the entrance of a small, rural town and nestled alongside the beautiful Big Sioux River, this campground provides an interesting blend of rustic charm and social interaction that sets it apart from typical camping destinations.
Described as a "special place" and its "own world" by those who've experienced it, River of the Double Bend is particularly well-suited for working families and groups who appreciate a lively, communal environment. Here, you'll find a mix of RVs and tents tightly packed, creating a close-knit "village of people" where many know each other well. While the natural surroundings might occasionally bring a "smell like cow" or an abundance of bugs depending on the season, these are minor details compared to the affordable rates, access to hot showers, and the unique sense of "tribal love" that defines this one-of-a-kind South Dakota campground.
River of the Double Bend Campground is conveniently located at 400 W 1st St, Trent, SD 57065, USA. This address places it right at the entrance of Trent, a very small and charming rural town in South Dakota. Its position alongside the Big Sioux River is a significant advantage, offering scenic views and direct access to water-based activities. Trent is approximately 25 miles north of Sioux Falls, making the campground easily accessible from a major urban center while still providing a tranquil, small-town escape. This proximity allows campers to enjoy the quietude of rural life with the option of a relatively short drive to the amenities and attractions of Sioux Falls, Brookings, Madison, and even Pipestone, MN.
Access to the campground is straightforward, with the address clearly indicating its location within the town. While the town itself is small, it provides a quiet bedroom community setting. The campground is within walking distance of the community swimming pool, which features a gravel-bottomed pool and a sand beach, complete with lifeguards. This ease of access to local facilities and its position on the Big Sioux River contribute significantly to its appeal as a convenient yet idyllic camping destination for both short and longer stays.
River of the Double Bend Campground is already notable for its exceptionally affordable pricing, with tent sites available for as low as $12 per night, which includes access to hot, unlimited showers. RV sites are also competitively priced, starting from $20 for electric only, $23 for full hookups, and primitive tent sites at $12. These low rates themselves serve as a significant ongoing "promotion" for campers seeking value in South Dakota.
While the provided information does not explicitly mention formalized seasonal discounts, loyalty programs, or special packages, it is common for campgrounds of this nature to offer reduced rates for extended stays (weekly or monthly). The strong community aspect and tendency for people to "come back" might also suggest informal benefits for returning guests. It’s hard to describe this place, because I never saw something of the like even though I imagine it to be all over the nation. Campground located at the entrance of a very small rural town, alongside a river. It smells like cow, and ( SD?) weather/season brought in lots of bugs and mosquitoes. The latter is the reason why I did not stay long. $12 for tent spot including access to hot unlimited shower! Can’t beat that. The campground: tightly packed with people, RVs, and campers mainly, and some tents. This is a family campground for working families. Many people here know each other for a long time; they sit and drink together at night; they go to Steve’s and drink some more—or vice versa. There are canoes and kayaks. Fish is not good, but the river is. Yes: the 3 or so rooms with toilets and showers are not quite enough if you do not get up early. And it can be dirty because of the packs of kids and grownups. Nothing the owners can do much about. This is a very affordable place that people come back to and create family at. Tribal love. A small village of people who might know each other too much. It’s a special place and its own world.

Mar 26, 2025 · Steve VeenhofStumbled across their campground on a cross country trip. So happy that we did because the place and the couple running it were wonderful! We had the river front to ourselves that night. We will go back again, next time it will be on purpose!
