Rockford State Recreation Area (SRA) Tent Campground Area 5, located near Holmesville, NE, presents a compelling option for those seeking a more traditional and serene camping experience, particularly for tent campers.

It's an area within the larger Rockford State Recreation Area, which encompasses approximately 300 land acres around a 150-acre lake. This focus suggests an emphasis on appreciating the natural surroundings, with amenities designed to support a simpler, more direct connection with nature. Reviews highlight its quiet, shaded, and often waterfront spots, making it an ideal choice for those who value tranquility and picturesque settings.

This article will provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Rockford SRA Tent Campground Area 5 from the perspective of a local Nebraskan user. We will delve into its peaceful location, the essential services and notable features it offers, and why it stands out as a suitable destination for your next outdoor escape, whether you're a seasoned tent camper or looking for a quiet lakeside retreat in Nebraska.

Location and Accessibility

Rockford SRA Tent Campground Area 5 is situated at 6CCC+VG, Holmesville, NE 68310, USA, within the broader Rockford State Recreation Area. This location places it in Gage County, a region in southeastern Nebraska known for its rolling farmland, quiet communities, and recreational lakes. For Nebraskans, its accessibility combines the benefit of being "away from it all" with practical proximity to local resources.

Holmesville itself is a small, unincorporated community, contributing to the peaceful and rural ambiance of the campground. While Holmesville may not offer extensive commercial services, the nearby city of Beatrice (approximately 8 miles west of Rockford Lake SRA) provides all necessary amenities. Campers can easily drive to Beatrice for groceries, gas, bait, or any other supplies needed for their stay, ensuring convenience without detracting from the natural setting of the campground.

The Rockford State Recreation Area is accessible via well-maintained roads. For instance, it's located 8 miles east of Beatrice on U.S. 136 and then 2 miles south on South 94th Road. This straightforward access from a major U.S. highway makes it relatively easy to reach from various parts of Nebraska. Despite its rural charm, the campground is not isolated, ensuring a smooth journey for visitors.

The fact that the campground is located on the "northern side of the lake" and offers "waterfront spots" highlights its prime position for water-based activities like fishing and boating on the 150-acre Rockford Lake. This lakeside setting is a major draw for those looking to enjoy aquatic recreation alongside their camping experience. The combination of easy road access, proximity to essential services in Beatrice, and a beautiful lakeside location makes Rockford SRA Tent Campground Area 5 a convenient and attractive option for any Nebraska local.

Services Offered

Rockford SRA Tent Campground Area 5, as part of the broader Rockford State Recreation Area, provides essential services focused on facilitating a comfortable and enjoyable outdoor experience, particularly for tent campers. While it offers a more rustic feel than some fully developed RV parks, it covers the fundamental needs for a pleasant stay.

  • Basic Utilities (Water & Vault Toilets): Water is available at the campground, which is crucial for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene. Vault toilets are also provided, offering a fundamental restroom facility for campers. It's important to note that modern restrooms (flush toilets) and showers are generally not available at Rockford Lake SRA, aligning with a more traditional camping experience.
  • Picnic Amenities: The presence of "picnic areas" with "enough for 4-5 groups" and information about 90 picnic tables and 88 grills within the larger SRA suggests that each campsite area, including Area 5, likely comes equipped with picnic tables and fire rings/grills for cooking and outdoor dining.
  • Self-Registration (Iron Ranger): Camping fees at Rockford Lake SRA are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, with campers registering and paying their nightly fees via a "raised, locked box called an iron ranger." This system offers convenience and flexibility for arrivals.
  • Park Entry Permit Requirement: As part of a Nebraska State Recreation Area, a Nebraska State Park Permit is required for each vehicle entering the park area. These can be purchased in advance online or on-site, in addition to the camping fees.
  • Lake Access and Boating Facilities: The 150-acre Rockford Lake welcomes all types of boats, with one dock and one ramp available. This service allows campers to easily launch their vessels for fishing, recreation, or simply enjoying time on the water.

  • Basic but Functional Setup: Although privacy might be limited if the area is full due to its "pretty open" layout, the fact that "Each campground has enough for 4-5 groups" indicates a design that accommodates small gatherings, making it suitable for multiple friends or families camping together while still maintaining a sense of a designated area.
  • Recreational Opportunities at Rockford Lake SRA: As part of a larger State Recreation Area, campers have access to a 150-acre lake for boating and fishing (species like bullhead, bluegill, catfish, walleye), a 1-mile hiking trail, and areas for picnicking and swimming. • Camping Fees: Camping fees are separate from the park entry permit. Rockford SRA typically offers various site types (though Area 5 is focused on tent/non-electric) with corresponding nightly fees. These fees are generally consistent and affordable for a public campground.
  • First-Come, First-Served Basis: All camping at Rockford SRA is on a first-come, first-served basis. This means there are no reservations, and while it isn't a "promotion," it offers flexibility for spontaneous trips but requires early arrival during peak times to secure a spot.

Went to the campsite on the northern side of the lake, was completely empty. Nice shady areas for camping and picnics. Each campground has enough for 4-5 groups, just don't expect much privacy if other people are there because it's all pretty open.
