Introduction / Overview
Deep within the expansive and famously rugged Rothrock State Forest, one of Central Pennsylvania’s premier outdoor destinations, lies Campsite #3 on Pine Swamp Road. This designated motorized, roadside primitive campsite offers a coveted opportunity for locals to immerse themselves fully in the serenity of the Keystone State’s wilderness. Unlike the amenities-rich experience of a traditional State Park campground, Campsite #3 provides a genuine rustic retreat. It is one of a limited number of sites managed by the Pennsylvania DCNR to facilitate camping directly near your vehicle, allowing for a comfortable base camp while preserving the low-density, remote feel of the State Forest.
The site is highly regarded by those seeking space and seclusion. Described by previous visitors as an "amazingly peaceful space for a gathering," it features a large, level clearing—a crucial detail for setting up camp—surrounded by the vast forest landscape. This location is particularly popular among groups, mountain bikers, and dedicated hikers, thanks to its proximity to significant trails and the gravel road network that defines Rothrock. Prospective campers must embrace self-sufficiency, as the primitive nature of the site means all necessities, from water to sanitation, must be managed personally. Campsite #3 is not merely a place to stay; it is a strategic hub for exploring the "wildest" parts of the Pennsylvania mountains.
Location and Accessibility
Rothrock State Forest Campsite #3 is officially located on Pine Swamp Road near Petersburg, PA 16669. While its mailing proximity is often associated with the Petersburg area, the campsite sits deep inside the State Forest, straddling the boundaries of Huntingdon and Centre Counties, and placing it within the highly trafficked State College Region of Rothrock. This location offers the benefit of being relatively accessible to the amenities of nearby State College and Huntingdon, while maintaining the isolation of a remote forest setting.
Accessibility, however, comes with the caveat of State Forest travel. Reaching Campsite #3 involves navigating miles of dirt and gravel State Forest roads, including Pine Swamp Road and potentially Bear Meadows or Laurel Run Roads, depending on the approach. As noted by customers, "The roads are graveled miles long," which is typical for travel within DCNR lands. These roads are not maintained for conventional highway speeds and can be narrow, rocky, or unmaintained in the winter. Visitors should always carry a physical map or GPS coordinates and be mindful of road conditions. The driveway surface is a grass/dirt spur from the main road. The remote location ensures privacy but means cell phone coverage is unreliable or non-existent, demanding that campers come prepared with contingency plans and a full understanding of their route before entering the forest.
Services Offered (use a list)
As a designated motorized, primitive roadside campsite, Campsite #3 is purposefully minimalist, offering only the essentials required for a rustic outdoor experience, as per the DCNR's standard for State Forest camping.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Rothrock State Forest Campsite #3 is perfectly tailored for the knowledgeable and self-reliant Pennsylvania local seeking an authentic mountain escape. This site is not about convenience; it is about connection—connecting with the land, with friends, and with the challenge of a truly wild outdoor experience. For residents who are familiar with the terrain and the ethos of State Forest camping, Campsite #3 offers significant benefits.
Its designation as a motorized, primitive campsite provides the flexibility to bring necessary gear (tents, food storage, mountain bikes) right to the site, a huge advantage for larger groups or specialized activities like the Mid State Trail access. The site’s quiet, remote nature—removed from the hustle of developed parks—is a major draw for locals looking to unplug, stargaze, and enjoy the "mind blowing" peacefulness cited by visitors. Furthermore, the availability of a scenic overlook, reportedly offering a view of State College, provides a unique, rewarding experience that blends rugged effort with a spectacular vista. Campsite #3 represents the best of Pennsylvania’s commitment to dispersed, sustainable recreation, making it an ideal, sought-after base camp for those who consider the wild beauty of Rothrock State Forest their backyard. The required free permit ensures that this precious solitude remains protected for future generations of Pennsylvania adventurers.

Mind blowing place, we were in Camp 3, and it’s amazingly peaceful space for a gathering. The roads are graveled miles long, and We enjoyed a walk from camp 3 to beautiful dam. Parked anywhere in the forest and felt pretty safe with a big group.

Dec 22, 2024 · Arthur Wperfect spot. enough room for anything you could want to do. very close to the stream. hammock spots along the edge, many flat spots for tents.
Sep 05, 2021 · Tim ANice spot for camping right between laurel run rd and pine grove mills. You can get a free permit by just calling and reserving the dates. There was a firepit and a picnic bench. Running sources of water all over. We could hear the stream from the campsite. If you are hunting, go a little deeper in past the cabins. The mountain directly on this camp is tough hiking. Lots of thorns and rocks. I really enjoyed my trip and will go back with my kids when the weather is warmer.
