Introduction / Overview
For seasoned Pennsylvania outdoor enthusiasts, the mention of Rothrock State Forest instantly conjures images of rugged mountain ridges, vast woodland, and, most notably, a world-class network of hiking and mountain biking trails. Campsite #6, a designated motorized, roadside primitive site near Reedsville, offers a rare and valuable opportunity to establish a base camp deep within this Central Pennsylvania wilderness. Managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), this site is specifically tailored for those who crave a remote, low-density camping experience where the focus is strictly on nature and adventure.
Unlike developed campgrounds, Campsite #6 provides a spacious, open yet private area to set up multiple tents or park a camper, offering a true "get away from it all" feeling. Guests consistently appreciate the site's layout—often described as a large, open oval—which is perfect for a group gathering, yet surrounded by enough forest to maintain a sense of seclusion. Its location is a strategic launching point for mountain bikers eager to tackle the area's challenging terrain, including sections of the famous Coopers Gap and Rothrock TrailMix Epic routes. Visitors must be prepared for a primitive experience; this site is a retreat into the forest, demanding a self-sufficient approach to water, sanitation, and provisions. This is not just a place to sleep; it is a gateway to one of the most celebrated and strenuous recreational areas in the Keystone State.
Location and Accessibility
Rothrock State Forest Campsite #6 is situated in a remote section of the nearly 97,000-acre Rothrock State Forest, in the Ridge and Valley province of the Appalachians. The nearest community is Reedsville, PA 17084, placing the campsite within Mifflin County. This location is strategically positioned to offer access to the extensive trail systems of the greater Rothrock and Seven Mountains region.
Accessibility is a defining feature of this site, and travelers should be fully aware of the primitive nature of state forest roads. Access to Campsite #6 is via gravel and dirt State Forest roads—often referred to as "mountain road drives" by local users. While many of the motorized sites can be reached by 2-wheel drive vehicles in favorable weather, the DCNR advises caution. Visitors should be confident in their driving capabilities, especially when navigating trailers or larger vehicles, and should investigate the route beforehand. The remote setting means that this site is intentionally isolated from population centers, making a paper map and pre-planned directions essential, as cell phone coverage is not reliable or available in many parts of the forest. The journey is part of the experience, leading travelers to a secluded destination that is deliberately difficult to reach, thus ensuring its preserved tranquility. The site itself is reportedly located behind an unlocked metal gate, which must be kept closed to maintain the integrity of the area.

Very nice open but private area to set up multiple camps/tents. Although you are surrounded by trees there is plenty of open sky for stargazing on a clear night. There are several hiking and biking trails nearby. Pets are welcome too! Rothrock is a great place to reconnect with nature. (Plenty of trees for hammocks)
Mar 19, 2024 · Steve KellerLarge, open oval with plenty of space for tents or camper, ample parking. Has a firepit and picnic table. This is a great site for a group of mountain bikers or folks that just want to get away from it all and hang out in the woods. One trail nearby, but the views and landmarks are limited at this location. I slept in a hammock just off the main camp. Plenty of places to hang around the camp as long as your willing to go a few yards into the woods. If your a family looking to use this as a base camp for visiting the surrounding area, be advised that access is by gravel roads. If you don't mind the gravel, mountain road drives, then your good. If your mode of transportation is a bike, then make sure the miles and elevations are to your liking. If your a mountain biker, then get it.
Oct 11, 2022 · James CassidyNice campsite but it's very open. Not many trees to hang a hammock or to hang a tarp to get out of the rain if need be. Nice fire ring and only one picnic table for such a large site. Plenty of parking. There is no restroom or playground. Rustic at it's finest.
Jan 02, 2024 · JAGGreat spot for a large group to get to explore Cooper's Gap as a hub. Plenty of space to Park and place tents. Has a fire pit and picnic table. Would recommend a Pop up tent for dry space in case of rain for cooking or eating.
