Seymour Johnson AFB Campground About

North Carolina is a state that proudly supports its military community, and for service members, veterans, and their families, finding convenient and affordable recreational options is always a plus. Our state offers a diverse range of natural beauty and outdoor activities, and for those who enjoy the camaraderie of a military installation combined with the joys of camping, certain facilities stand out. Today, we're taking a closer look at a specific resource available to authorized users right here in Eastern North Carolina: Seymour Johnson AFB Campground, also known as the Famcamp, located in Goldsboro, NC.

Military campgrounds, often called Famcamps, are designed to provide a comfortable and cost-effective lodging solution for eligible personnel. They typically offer essential amenities for RVs and a sense of security that comes with being on a controlled access base. Seymour Johnson AFB Campground aims to provide just that – a well-maintained and convenient spot for those who serve or have served, and their families, to relax and enjoy their time.

This article will provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Seymour Johnson AFB Campground. We’ll delve into its location on the base, the services it offers, its notable features and highlights, and why it might be a suitable choice for authorized users looking for a stay in North Carolina. All information is based on publicly available data and genuine customer feedback, ensuring a factual and helpful perspective.

Location and Accessibility

Seymour Johnson AFB Campground is located within the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, specifically near the Education Center and Library, at Goldsboro, NC 27531, USA. Goldsboro is a vibrant city in Wayne County, Eastern North Carolina, primarily known for being the home of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. This makes the campground's location exceptionally convenient for military personnel, their families, and other authorized users who are either stationed at or visiting the base.

Being situated on an active military installation means that access to the campground is restricted to authorized personnel (e.g., active duty, retired military, DoD civilians, and their families, depending on base regulations). Visitors will need to follow base entry procedures, which typically involve presenting valid military identification. Once on base, the campground is easily accessible.

The advantage of being on base is direct access to various facilities and services offered by Seymour Johnson AFB itself, including commissaries, Exchanges, gas stations, and potentially MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) facilities. For needs beyond the base, Goldsboro offers a full range of city amenities, including diverse dining options, shopping centers, healthcare services, and local attractions. Its central location in Eastern North Carolina also provides reasonable accessibility to other parts of the state, making it a convenient stop for those traveling through or with family in the area.

Services Offered

Seymour Johnson AFB Campground offers key services designed to provide a comfortable and functional stay for RV users. Based on customer feedback and general Famcamp provisions:

  • Full RV Hookups: The campground provides sites with full hookups, meaning campers have access to electricity, water, and sewer connections directly at their site. This is a fundamental service for modern RV travel, ensuring convenience.

  • Well-Maintained Sites: Reviewers noted that the "camp to be well maintained," indicating that the individual sites and possibly common areas are kept in good order, contributing to a pleasant stay.

  • Spacious Sites: At least one site (Site 14) was described as having "enough room for our 30’ travel trailer and our Ram 1500 tow vehicle," suggesting that many sites are adequately sized to accommodate larger RVs and accompanying vehicles.

  • Self Check-in System: The availability of a "self check-in system using a map with our site number" offers a convenient service, allowing for flexible arrival times.

  • Access to Base Amenities: While not a direct campground service, staying on an Air Force Base grants authorized campers access to the base's facilities, such as paved bike trails throughout the base, commissaries, and potentially MWR facilities like gyms or dining options. This indirect service significantly enhances the value of the stay.

One piece of feedback mentioned that "The grass and weeds were over 2 feet tall" upon arrival, suggesting that while generally well-maintained, there might be occasional variations in upkeep. Also, "No campfires allowed" is a specific rule to note.

Features / Highlights

Seymour Johnson AFB Campground offers several features and highlights that make it a notable option for authorized RVers in North Carolina:

  • On-Base Location: The primary highlight is its location directly on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. This provides a secure environment, convenient access to base services, and a unique experience for military-affiliated individuals.

  • Affordability: One reviewer explicitly mentioned the "low cost," indicating that the campground offers a budget-friendly option for camping and extended stays, which is a significant advantage for many travelers.

  • Well-Shaded Sites: Many sites are "well shaded," which is a desirable feature, especially during warmer months, providing natural cooling and comfort. However, this could be a drawback for those relying on solar power or satellite reception.

  • Functional Hookups: The review confirmed that "All the hookups worked as advertised and without issue," which is a crucial highlight for any RV park, ensuring a hassle-free experience with essential services.

  • Paved Bike Trails: The presence of "Nice paved bike trails throughout the base" offers a great recreational opportunity directly accessible from the campground, appealing to active individuals and families.

  • Suitability for Long-Term Stays: While explicitly stated in a previous review, Famcamps often accommodate longer stays for those on temporary duty or with family in the area, offering a stable and secure base. The reviewer's mention of staying with family in the area suggests this flexibility.

  • Positive Overall Experience: Despite minor issues, the overall experience for visitors was "a positive one," with a likelihood of returning, indicating general satisfaction.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a military Famcamp operated by Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, the Seymour Johnson AFB Campground typically does not run commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the same way a civilian campground might. Pricing for military campgrounds is usually set at a consistently affordable rate for authorized users, reflecting the benefit provided to service members and their families.

The "low cost" itself can be considered a perpetual "offer" when compared to many civilian campgrounds offering similar amenities. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on rates, eligibility requirements, and any specific policies (such as those regarding long-term stays), it is always best to contact the campground directly. You can inquire if there are any seasonal adjustments to rates or any special considerations for extended visits.

My wife and I stayed at the Seymour Johnson AFB Famcamp during the 4th of July weekend. We found the camp to be well maintained. We stayed on site 14 which had enough room for our 30’ travel trailer and our Ram 1500 tow vehicle. All the hookups worked as advertised and without issue. The sites are well shaded which we enjoyed but if you have to rely on solar or satellite, this camp may not work for you. Overall, our experience was a positive one and we are likely to visit again as we have family in the area.

Arrived before noon to self check-in system using a map with our site number. The grass and weeds were over 2 feet tall. No campfires allowed. For the low cost, it was sufficient. Nice paved bike trails throughout the base.

Wanted to stay at this Fam Camp to visit my son before continuing south. We were very concerned about the stay process because they did not take reservations. Well they do now!!!!! Four days before leaving Pennsylvania to head south, I looked on their website and found a reservation request form. I completed the form and the next business day, the Rec Center called me to confirm my stay. We are staying in site 20 with our fifth wheel and the site is a long concrete pad with full hookups. The site is woodsy. The morning Reveille makes me proud to be an American. This is a great service that AFB's provide!!!!
