Introduction / Overview: Experience Rustic Equestrian Camping at Silvermine
For Connecticut’s dedicated equestrian community, finding a dedicated and spacious location for multi-day trail riding and camping is a cherished opportunity. Silvermine Horse Campsite, nestled within the vast and picturesque Natchaug State Forest in Hampton, CT, is precisely that destination. This facility is managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and is specifically designated for equestrians—campers must bring their own horses to stay here, creating a truly specialized and welcoming environment for horse owners.
Silvermine is renowned for its rustic, authentic, and "off-the-grid" camping experience. It provides a base camp with basic facilities from which riders can directly access an extensive network of bridle trails. The focus here is entirely on the quality of the trail riding and the camaraderie of the equestrian community. Recent visitors have noted the considerable work and improvements made to the area, particularly the trails, which are now celebrated for being in excellent condition and offering large, safe areas for cantering and galloping.
As a local horse enthusiast, this campsite offers a unique chance to fully immerse yourself and your mount in the natural beauty of Connecticut's celebrated Quiet Corner, enjoying the freedom of the forest and the peace of a specialized community camp.
Location and Accessibility: Deep in the Heart of Natchaug State Forest
Silvermine Horse Campsite is situated in Hampton, CT 06247, within the protected boundaries of Natchaug State Forest. This location places it in Windham County, a region often referred to as 'The Last Green Valley'—a testament to its rural character, preserved landscapes, and extensive forest cover. The forest offers a tranquil, secluded setting, yet remains reasonably accessible for Connecticut residents from across the state.
The main access to the general area of the campsite is often cited near 109 Kingsbury Road in Eastford, which is the location of the Natchaug State Forest office. The campsite itself is often referred to as being deep within the forest near a vast network of equestrian trails. This central location in Eastern Connecticut ensures that riders from Hartford, New Haven, and even shoreline communities can make a manageable trip to this beloved destination. The campsite is positioned close to the interconnected trail systems of Natchaug State Forest, James L. Goodwin State Forest, and even links to sections of the popular Air Line State Park Trail, offering an expansive riding territory.
It is important for visitors to note the rustic nature of the area. Access to the individual sites may be tight, particularly for modern, larger RVs or horse trailers (rigs exceeding 26-27 feet). Campers should expect forest roads and be prepared for backing or careful maneuvering, as the addition of a new, locked gate may prevent easy pull-through access previously available at some sites. Rangers frequently patrol the area, adding a layer of security and assurance to the remote location.

Conclusion: Why this Place is Suitable for Locals
Silvermine Horse Campsite is perfectly suited for Connecticut's local equestrian enthusiasts. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to escape the demands of daily life and fully engage in multi-day trail riding without ever leaving the state. The critical appeal lies in its designation as an equestrian-only area, fostering a unique, supportive community where local riders can connect, share tips, and enjoy the beautiful Connecticut landscape together.
The extensive, well-maintained trail system is a major asset, allowing for long, satisfying rides through a genuinely wild and protected part of the state. While the camping is undeniably rustic—requiring locals to be self-sufficient and bring their own potable water and all supplies—this is precisely what appeals to the adventurous spirit of the trail rider. The primitive nature ensures the campground remains quiet and focused on the natural experience.
For Connecticut horse owners, Silvermine Horse Campsite is not just a place to stay; it is a valued institution, offering an accessible, low-cost (or no-cost) means of engaging in their passion, right here in the peaceful, scenic heart of the state.

Had a fabulous time horse camping for four days with a couple of friends and four horses. I hadn't camped there since the early 90s, so this was a blast. It was actually quite busy in the camp as there were probably six others in there at the same time. I liked that the Rangers came through once or twice. There are Porta Potty's as well. Trails were in pretty good condition. I feel they were better than two years ago when I came in for a day trip. You can tell considerable work has been done in Lost Silvermine. It is appreciated!! A few things to note: there are only about five sites that can accommodate larger rigs, mine was 26' and my friend was 27'. It was tight getting into the site. Some of the renovations didn't leave much room for a safe horse paddock (too many rocks or cut down brush). You could definitely put your rig on one site and horses on another fairly close by. Not ideal but doable. With the new, locked gate, it does not appear that we can pull through anymore, so you are either pulling in or backing into the site. The biggest challenge is that the water pump didn't work. We attempted it two or three times to no avail. It did not appear we could prime it with water in any way without taking the cover off. We ended up just having water brought in (we brought some and lucky to have had the ability to get more). For now, plan to bring water for you and your horses. If the pump does work, it is only good for horses. Enjoy the camp!!
Sep 30, 2024 · Brie MessierI don't like camping here. Most of the campsites are to cramped for large rigs. Most of the trees are gone making it hard to highline your horses. The trails are fabulous for riding. Lots of safe areas to canter/gallup your horses .
Nov 09, 2022 · deborah cudmoreHad a wonderful camping and riding weekend . So enjoyed the Lost Silvermine horse camp. A nice quiet relaxing area. Good trails.
Jun 25, 2018 · Ann JalkanenNot sure what is going on at the camp. A lot of trees were cut down, campsites were not suitable for camping and it look like they are still cutting.
Apr 08, 2020 · Brenda SkidmoreNot really a place atm... Closed. No Facilities. Trees are all cut, looks like its ready to remodel or close for good?
