Introduction / Overview: A Hidden Gem in Connecticut's Quiet Corner
For Connecticut locals seeking an authentic and deeply relaxing getaway without the overwhelming crowds of larger resort-style parks, Peppertree Campground in Eastford stands out as a true "hidden gem." Nestled on the banks of the sparkling clear Natchaug River, this family and pet-friendly establishment offers a quieter, country-style camping experience that focuses on tranquility and natural beauty. It's the perfect destination for those who prioritize the soothing sounds of a flowing river and the warmth of genuine, friendly service.
Peppertree is intentionally on the smaller side, which past guests agree is a key part of its charm. The atmosphere is cozy, welcoming, and centered around a peaceful river setting. Guests consistently praise the owner, Phil, for being "exceptionally kind and easy going," ensuring every camper feels welcome with a smile. If your ideal Connecticut camping trip involves a clean, well-maintained site, excellent fishing, and a chance to truly unwind, Peppertree Campground is the quiet escape you've been looking for. It caters to a range of campers, from those with large RVs requiring full hook-ups to traditional tent campers who want to be close to the riverbank, providing a beautiful backdrop in any season—especially the quieter beauty of the spring and fall.
Location and Accessibility: Riverside Serenity on the Natchaug
Peppertree Campground is strategically located at 146 Chaplin Road, Eastford, CT 06242, USA, placing it directly in the heart of Connecticut's northeastern region, famously known as the Quiet Corner. Its most defining feature is its direct frontage on the Natchaug River, a noted "Trout Park" stocked by the CT DEEP, making it a premier spot for local anglers.
The campground’s address places it directly along Route 198 (Chaplin Road), ensuring easy access for both RVs and vehicles towing trailers. It is conveniently accessible from major interstates for residents traveling from across the state: just a short drive from I-84 via Route 74 and Route 44, or from I-395 via Route 6. This accessibility, combined with the secluded, forested setting, offers the ideal balance for a weekend retreat.
Crucially, the campground sits directly across the river from the Natchaug State Forest, meaning miles of public hiking and biking trails are a stone's throw away. This proximity enhances the outdoor adventure possibilities without requiring campers to move their base camp. Even sites not directly on the river are noted by customers to be close enough to hear the water—a natural sound machine that guarantees "great sleep sounds."

We have stayed here a few times. The campground is on the smaller side but in a good way. If you are looking for a big pool and a lot of activities then this is not your place but if you enjoy relaxing next to a river this is it. In part because there is not a pool, we like coming in the spring or fall. The owner, Phil is exceptionally kind and easy going. He makes you feel welcome and always has a smile. This is a hidden gem. Here are a couple pictures. The first with the firepit was our site.
Jan 19, 2025 · Dan HPeppertree is a small but beautiful little campground on the Natchaug River. The owner is extremely helpful. The first time we camped there we were right on the river. My husband enjoyed fly fishing. The second time we camped there we weren't on the river, but we were close. However, there are several spots for easy access along the river. And we could still hear the river which makes for great sleep sounds. We will definitely be back again.
Jun 26, 2024 · Julie KennyThe campground is not maintained nor updated. The owner is accomatating, but he needs to make some upgrades to the facility. He is charging $75 a night, which is steep for a no frills campground. We stayed at at a gorgeous campground in Hadley's Point, Maine for only $65 a night with incredible amenities.
Jul 05, 2024 · Alicia MoyerThe owner is one of the best and friendliest that we have come across in a long time. He made time to answer questions and always checked in on campers to make sure all was good. We enjoyed a relaxing weekend by the river!
Aug 26, 2024 · LaurieWhat a great Family campground! We had a site right on the river. The “marriage saver” was awesome helping us back in. The site was very spacious. They had a bunch of activities including a duck race. My son loved the ice cream social. We would recommend to family and friends. About 3 days after our trip we received a hand written note in the mail from the owners. That was a great touch.
