Exploring Snow Lake Kampground: An Overview for Michigan Campers

For Michigan residents considering a local camping trip, understanding the nuances of various campgrounds is essential to ensure a pleasant experience. Snow Lake Kampground, located in Fenwick, MI, offers a range of camping options, from RV and tent sites to cabins, aiming to provide an outdoor escape. However, it's crucial for prospective visitors to be fully informed about what to expect, as recent customer feedback highlights some significant aspects of their experience. While the idea of a lakeside kampground in Michigan is appealing, a deeper dive into recent visitor comments reveals a more complex picture, particularly regarding accommodation standards and park atmosphere. This article aims to provide a factual and informative overview of Snow Lake Kampground, based on available public data and customer reviews, to help Michigan users make an informed decision for their next outdoor adventure.

Location and Accessibility: Fenwick, Michigan's Countryside Charm

Snow Lake Kampground is situated at 644 E Snows Lake Rd, Fenwick, MI 48834, USA. Fenwick is a small community nestled in the heart of Michigan, offering a rural setting that often appeals to those seeking a break from urban life. Its location provides access to the quiet countryside, potentially offering opportunities for local nature appreciation.

The address indicates proximity to Snow Lake, suggesting potential for water-based activities, though direct lake access details for campers should be verified. For Michigan residents, Fenwick is reachable via state and local roads, and depending on your starting point in the state, it offers a relatively straightforward drive. While the exact driving times from major Michigan cities would vary, its rural setting typically implies a journey through scenic routes, leading to a quieter environment away from major highways. However, as noted by one reviewer, the cabin they stayed in was "right on the main drag when you come in," indicating that some sites might be closer to the entrance or main road than others. For campers bringing their own RVs or tents, the accessibility to the sites is generally what you would expect from a rural campground, but it's always advisable to confirm directions and site specifics prior to arrival.

Services Offered: What to Expect at Snow Lake Kampground

Based on typical campground offerings and insights from customer reviews, Snow Lake Kampground provides various services to its guests. It is important to note that the quality and experience of these services can vary significantly based on individual expectations and the specific type of accommodation chosen.

  • RV Sites: The campground likely offers sites equipped for RVs, although specific details on hookups (electric, water, sewer) are not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews. Standard RV parks typically offer a range of these services.

  • Tent Sites: Primitive or designated tent camping areas are generally available for those preferring a more traditional camping experience.

  • Cabin Rentals: The kampground offers cabins for rent, providing an alternative to RV or tent camping. One review specifically mentions a "deluxe cabin."

  • Bathroom Facilities: Access to restrooms and showers is a standard expectation at campgrounds. One review, however, raises significant concerns about the cleanliness of the bathroom facilities in the rented cabin, stating "two dead cockroaches in the toilet and the toilet lid and bowl were covered in dried up feces." It's unclear if these issues extend to communal bathroom facilities, but this is a critical point for potential visitors to consider.

  • On-site Rules and Management: The campground operates with a set of rules regarding guest behavior, including moderation of alcohol consumption, prohibition of marijuana use and swearing, and a strict "NO VISITORS" policy. These rules are communicated upon check-in and are enforced by the management.

  • Customer Service: Based on one review, the campground management did provide a refund for the "unacceptable" cabin without much question, and offered a visitor's pass, indicating a willingness to address immediate complaints. However, the overall impression left on the reviewer was negative due to the condition of the cabin and the overall "vibe" of the place.

Features / Highlights: Points of Interest and Potential Concerns

Snow Lake Kampground's features aim to attract various campers, but recent customer feedback highlights some aspects that might be perceived as both positive and negative:

  • Potential for Children's Enjoyment: Despite other issues, one reviewer noted, "Kids had a great time," suggesting that elements of the campground might appeal to younger visitors, possibly due to open spaces or simple recreational opportunities that are not explicitly detailed.

  • Scenic Views (from some areas): While not explicitly stated, proximity to Snow Lake suggests potential for pleasant views or access to the lake. The review mentioning the cabin "looked really cute from the outside" might imply some aesthetic appeal from certain vantage points.

  • Strict Rules and Policies: The campground enforces a strict set of rules, including "NO VISITORS," which can be a highlight for those seeking a highly controlled and quiet environment, but a drawback for others who wish to host guests.

  • Discrepancies in Cabin Quality: A significant highlight (or lowlight) is the condition of the "deluxe cabin" described in one review. Issues included a strong, stale odor, undersized and uncomfortable beds ("rubber mattress," "shelves shoved into a closet"), presence of dead cockroaches, dried feces on the toilet, and a large spider web. This indicates that the quality of some rental accommodations may be severely lacking.

  • Pest Control Concerns: The presence of cockroaches and a mouse trap in the cabin raises serious questions about pest control and overall hygiene within the rental units.

  • Unusual Community Atmosphere: A pervasive concern expressed by one reviewer was a "really, really weird vibe." This was attributed to a perceived division between "regulars" (permanent residents) and "renters," with "regulars" frequently driving golf carts past the "renters'" area, creating a feeling of being "monkeys in a cage." This suggests a potentially uncomfortable social dynamic for some visitors.

  • Golf Cart Policy: Only "regulars" are allowed to have golf carts, which contributes to the described social dynamic and may be seen as an inconvenience for other campers.

Promotions or Special Offers: Information Not Readily Available

The provided customer reviews do not mention any specific promotions, discounts, or special offers currently available at Snow Lake Kampground. In general, campgrounds may offer:

  • Seasonal Rates: Discounts for off-peak seasons or extended stays.

  • Holiday Packages: Specific deals for major holiday weekends, though these often come with specific booking requirements and higher demand.

  • First-Time Camper Discounts: Sometimes offered to attract new visitors.

Given the limited information, prospective campers are strongly advised to contact Snow Lake Kampground directly to inquire about any current promotions, pricing for different site types (RV, tent, cabin), and availability. It is also crucial to confirm all rules and policies, especially regarding visitors and pet policies for specific accommodations, as these can significantly impact a planned trip.

Conclusion: Is Snow Lake Kampground Suitable for Michigan Locals?

For Michigan locals considering Snow Lake Kampground in Fenwick, it's important to approach with a clear understanding of what has been reported by previous visitors. While the rural setting and potential for a quiet escape might initially appeal, recent customer experiences highlight significant concerns that prospective campers should weigh carefully.

The stringent rules, particularly the "NO VISITORS" policy, and the described "weird vibe" between seasonal residents and transient campers, suggest that the social atmosphere may not suit everyone. Furthermore, the severe issues reported with the cleanliness and condition of a "deluxe cabin" are a major red flag, indicating potential inconsistencies in accommodation quality and hygiene standards. While management did provide a refund for the cabin, the inconvenience and disappointment caused by such conditions can significantly impact a planned vacation.

For Michigan residents who prioritize strict rules, a potentially less traditional campground atmosphere, and are perhaps bringing their own RVs or tents (where the interior cleanliness of rental units would not be an issue), Snow Lake Kampground might be considered. However, those seeking a traditional, worry-free, family-friendly camping experience with reliable accommodation quality and an open, welcoming community vibe may wish to exercise caution and thoroughly investigate current conditions before booking. It appears that while the location offers a rural Michigan setting, the overall suitability for locals will largely depend on their specific preferences and tolerance for the issues highlighted in recent reviews.

I rarely post a review but feel I need to post this. We made reservations several months ago to stay in the deluxe cabin on this campground. My daughter and son in law and their kids, my son in law's parents, and son in law's brothers family booked sites for their campers. We arrived on Friday night and when we checked in we were told if we drank it better be in moderation, and we better not smoke marijuana or swear. Well ok. And absolutely NO VISITORS. Ok to that too, we sort of chuckled about all the rules but their campground, their rules. We went over to the campground, which is right on the main drag when you come in. It looked really cute from the outside. We opened the door and I knew right away it wasn't good. First of all, it smelled like it hadn't been opened all winter. Ok, I can air it out I thought. I walked back to the bedroom that was supposed to be a double bed, not even close. Just a little bit bigger than a twin, and it filled up the entire room. The mattress was a rubber mattress, way worse than a cheap air matress. The bunk beds were basically shelves shoved into a closet with cheap pads down. We sat down in the living room and decided that we could sleep on the couches. At that point, my husband went back into the bathroom and came back out immediately. There were two dead cockroaches in the toilet and the toilet lid and bowl were covered in dried up feces. Smeared everywhere! We then noticed a few more dead cockroaches on the kitchen counter. We then noticed a mouse trap in the closet, not a good sign. And we then saw a HUGE spider web between the couch and the wall with a HUGE spider in the middle of it. I am OUT! Absolutely unacceptable! And absolutely disgusting! They put down all these rules but they can't clean shit off the toilets or get the cockroaches under control. Unreal. We didn't know what to do because for sure was not going to stay in that cabin but I also was counting on spending time with my family. I didn't want to say we weren't saying because I was afraid they wouldn't let us back in. My son in law went to the office and let them know the cabin was unacceptable and to their credit, they refunded my account, didn't even question it much which made me think they knew it was gross, just didn't care. And they gave me a visitors pass for the weekend. This was all great and everything, but we had counted on staying there and of course we couldn't, so we had to drive back and forth to Lansing several times. It wasn't the weekend we planned AT ALL, and it seemed pretty irresponsible to try and rent a pig sty like that. On top of all that, this place has a really, really weird vibe to it. I cannot really explain it. There are regulars that are there permanently on one side and then the renters that are on the other. The "regulars" drove by in the golf carts continously from morning until night. (Renters are not allowed to have golf carts) Over and over, the same people going by, over and over. I felt like they were coming to the other side to see the rif raf, like we were monkeys in a cage. Very strange. Kids had a great time, the time I did get to spend with them since I was driving back and forth all the time. I am not a camper, now I remember why. The people I was with who are campers will not be back either. Just lame to ruin people's long weekend.

Absolutely joke of a camp ground. Changes the cabin policy the day we are supposed to come up with our two dogs that were going to he staying in the truck in kennels no where near their cabins. If I could give them a negative 100 star that wouldn't justify it. Way to ruin a trip snowlake camp ground. Real class act.

We stayed at Snows lake Kampground for Labor Day weekend. We rented a cabin. The cabin was very nice and was perfect for our small family get away. The service was not the greatest. The front desk ladies were not welcoming or kind. They do not allow visitors which was very disappointing as we were there celebrating our toddlers birthday. They had a food truck at the campground for the day but they were VERY overpriced and only took cash, the ATM at the store was out of order so a lot of campers couldn’t even try the truck. They did have lots of events that my son enjoyed. The pool was very busy, cold, and seemed dirty. We rode a tractor ride and a kid sitting next to us dropped his phone. The refused to stop for him and when we got back to camp they made him ride his bike to get it alone. They said “we don’t stop for anyone”. This seemed very disrespectful as the child was in tears. We had friends that wanted to camp with us but the office said they were booked up. The whole weekend three sites next to us were vacant and opened. We ended up leaving a day early. They also said no dogs at the cabins but get our neighbors had their dogs. The playground had puke in it from prior kids playing. Just seemed very unsanitary. My son enjoyed his birthday weekend but we wish some times went different. We will not visit the campground again.

Snow Lake was a great campground! My wife booked us there for 7 weeks this summer. We utilized it throughout the week a few times, but mostly every weekend. The kids' activities on the weekend were pretty cool. They also do a family hay ride and a teen hay ride on Saturday night, weather permitting. Pool, hot tub, sauna, shuffleboard, just to name a few other things they have to offer, plus many more! Kayaked around Snow Lake when I could, did some fishing. Caught a couple nice crappie! All in all, it was a great summer. I hope to do it again next year!
