South Fourche Campground About
For Arkansans who appreciate the simple pleasures of outdoor recreation, from a peaceful picnic to an overnight stay under the stars, finding accessible and well-maintained spots is key. South Fourche Campground, located in Plainview, Arkansas, offers a practical and convenient option for those looking to enjoy the natural beauty of our state. While opinions on any location can vary, this campground provides essential amenities within the scenic backdrop of the Ouachita National Forest, making it a viable choice for a quick stop or a longer, more rustic camping experience.
Arkansas, renowned as "The Natural State," provides a diverse range of outdoor experiences, from rugged wilderness to more developed recreational areas. South Fourche Campground fits into the latter, offering a structured environment that prioritizes basic comfort and functionality. As a local, you understand the value of an honor-system campground – it speaks to a certain trust and community spirit that we Arkansans appreciate. This approach makes it a flexible and straightforward option for campers who value simplicity and self-reliance.
The campground's setup, featuring individual picnic tables, fire pits, and charcoal grills at each parking space, suggests a design geared towards both day-use visitors and overnight campers. This versatility makes it suitable for various outdoor activities, whether you're planning a family barbecue, a casual lunch break, or setting up a tent for the night. The emphasis on "very clean and well maintained" facilities, as noted by a satisfied visitor, is a crucial factor for any outdoor area, ensuring a pleasant and hygienic environment for all users.
It’s important for local users to consider their personal preferences when choosing a campground. While some appreciate seclusion, others value convenience and accessibility. South Fourche Campground, with its location right on the highway, caters to those who prioritize ease of access, making it a good choice for travelers passing through or those looking for a quick, uncomplicated camping solution. Understanding these characteristics allows Arkansans to determine if South Fourche Campground aligns with their ideal outdoor experience in our beautiful state.
Location and Accessibility
South Fourche Campground is located in Plainview, AR 72857, USA. This address places it within Yell County, Arkansas, a region known for its proximity to the vast Ouachita National Forest. The campground's key characteristic regarding location and accessibility is its direct placement "right on the highway," as noted by a customer review. While the specific highway number isn't provided, this implies it's situated on a main road, likely a state or U.S. highway that traverses through or near Plainview.
This roadside location offers significant advantages for accessibility. It means the campground is very easy to find and reach, making it ideal for travelers who are passing through and need a convenient place to stop for a break, a meal, or an overnight stay. RVs, trailers, and cars can access the site without navigating complicated turns or unpaved rural roads, which is a major plus for many campers.
For locals, this accessibility means less driving time and more time enjoying the outdoors. If you're looking for a quick picnic spot or a last-minute camping solution, South Fourche Campground's prominent location makes it a practical choice. Plainview, though a smaller community, offers basic services that might be within a reasonable driving distance, ensuring that campers can resupply if needed.
However, the proximity to the highway also comes with a trade-off: noise. The review mentions it "is loud with trucks driving by," indicating that while easily accessible, it might not be the most secluded or quiet camping experience. This factor is important for campers to consider based on their preference for ambiance. Despite the noise, its easy-to-reach position makes it a highly convenient stop for many Arkansans exploring the region or traveling across the state.
Services Offered
South Fourche Campground operates on an honor system and provides a range of basic yet essential services tailored for both day-use and overnight camping. While it may not feature extensive amenities found at larger, more developed parks, its offerings focus on providing a functional and well-maintained outdoor experience. Here are the key services you can expect:
- Daytime Camping Area: The campground is explicitly described as a "very clean and well maintained daytime camping area," indicating its suitability for picnics, short breaks, and recreational activities during daylight hours.
- Honor System: Operating on an "honor system to use," the campground relies on the integrity of its visitors for payment, typically a $5 fee as mentioned in the review. This offers flexibility and a less formal entry process.
- Picnic Tables: Each parking space is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meals, games, or organizing camping gear.
- Fire Pits: Individual fire pits are available at each site, allowing campers to safely build campfires for warmth, cooking, or enjoying a traditional outdoor experience.
- Charcoal Grills: Complementing the fire pits, each parking space includes a charcoal grill, ideal for preparing meals and barbecues, especially for day-use visitors.
- Parking Spaces: Dedicated parking spaces are provided, indicating clear areas for vehicles, which might accommodate both cars and smaller RVs, though it's important to note the primary description as a "daytime camping area" and the lack of specific RV hookup mentions.
- Well Maintained: A consistent theme from the reviews is that the area is "very clean and well maintained," suggesting regular upkeep of the grounds and facilities, which is a significant service in itself for outdoor recreational areas.
It's important to note that without explicit mention of restrooms, potable water spigots (beyond what might be available for drinking), or designated tent pads, this campground appears to offer more primitive or self-contained camping options suitable for those prepared for a rustic experience, or primarily day-use visitors. Campers should arrive prepared with their own water and be aware of restroom facilities if not explicitly provided on-site.
Features / Highlights
South Fourche Campground, despite its simple setup, boasts several key features and highlights that make it a notable spot for outdoor enthusiasts in Arkansas. These aspects cater to a specific type of camper and offer distinct advantages:
- Exceptional Cleanliness and Maintenance: A standout feature is its reputation for being "Very clean and well maintained." This commitment to upkeep ensures a pleasant and inviting environment, making it a comfortable place for picnics and camping.
- Convenient Individual Amenities: The provision of a "picnic table, fire pit, and charcoal grill at each parking space" is a significant highlight. This thoughtful setup offers immediate utility for visitors, allowing them to enjoy meals and campfires without needing to bring extensive gear or search for suitable spots.
- Honor System Simplicity: The "honor system to use" approach provides a straightforward and trusting method for access and payment ($5). This simplicity appeals to campers who prefer a less bureaucratic process and a more relaxed entry into the outdoors.
- Roadside Accessibility: Its location "right on the highway" makes it incredibly easy to access for travelers. This is ideal for quick stops, overnight stays during a road trip, or for those who prefer not to venture deep into more remote areas.
- Suitable for Day Use: Explicitly described as a "daytime camping area," it is perfectly designed for families or individuals looking for a scenic spot for a picnic, a quick cookout, or a place to rest and enjoy nature during the day.
- Ouachita National Forest Setting: While perhaps not deeply secluded, its location within the general vicinity of the Ouachita National Forest means visitors are surrounded by the natural beauty characteristic of this region, offering a taste of Arkansas's outdoor charm.
While some might find the highway proximity a drawback due to noise, for others, it's a key advantage, offering convenience that outweighs the lack of deep seclusion. The emphasis on cleanliness and individual site amenities truly makes South Fourche Campground a functional and appealing choice for its intended purpose.
Promotions or Special Offers
South Fourche Campground operates under an honor system, and its pricing structure is based on a simple, low fee rather than traditional commercial promotions. Therefore, you won't typically find "special offers" in the sense of discounts, loyalty programs, or seasonal sales as you might with privately owned, profit-driven businesses. The "promotion" here is inherent in its operational model:
- Affordable Fixed Fee: The primary "offer" is the consistent, low cost of $5 per use, regardless of whether it's for a day picnic or an overnight stay. This transparent and accessible pricing makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers and locals alike.
- Honor System Convenience: The honor system itself acts as a benefit, promoting ease of access without the need for advance reservations or staff interaction. This flexibility is a form of value for many campers.
- Inclusion of Basic Amenities: For the nominal fee, you receive access to individual picnic tables, fire pits, and charcoal grills at each parking space. This inclusive offering of essential camping/picnic features for a flat rate is a significant value proposition.
Since the campground is likely managed by a public entity (such as the U.S. Forest Service or a similar land management agency, given the "honor system" and "national forest" context), any changes to fees or very rare specific programs would typically be communicated through official government recreation websites or on-site signage. For the most up-to-date information on any potential fee adjustments or specific regulations, checking official Ouachita National Forest recreation resources would be the best approach, though the $5 honor system fee is generally consistent for such sites.
Contact Information
For South Fourche Campground, located in Plainview, AR, specific direct contact information such as a phone number or dedicated website for the campground itself is typically not provided for honor-system, rustic sites like this. These types of campgrounds are often managed as part of a larger district within a national forest or state park system.
Address: Plainview, AR 72857, USA
Given its likely affiliation with the Ouachita National Forest, the best way to obtain more detailed information, inquire about any specific regulations, or find out about current conditions (like fire bans or temporary closures) would be to contact the ranger district responsible for that section of the forest. While the specific ranger district for Plainview isn't provided here, a general search for "Ouachita National Forest ranger district Plainview AR" would likely yield the appropriate contact information (phone numbers and office addresses) for the nearest U.S. Forest Service office. They would be the authoritative source for comprehensive details about South Fourche Campground.
Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

It's a place that caters to those who value convenience and a straightforward camping experience in the beautiful landscape of our state.
Its primary appeal for locals lies in its "right on the highway" location. This means no lengthy detours or challenging navigation down obscure roads, making it perfect for spontaneous picnics, easy overnight stops while traveling across the state, or for those who simply want quick access to an outdoor setting without venturing deep into wilderness areas. This ease of access significantly reduces the planning and travel time, allowing more time to enjoy the outdoors.
The "very clean and well maintained" nature of the campground, coupled with the individual picnic tables, fire pits, and charcoal grills at each parking space, provides all the essentials for a comfortable and enjoyable visit. This affordability and self-service model align perfectly with the independent spirit and value-consciousness common among Arkansans.

For Arkansans looking for an unpretentious, functional, and easily accessible spot to connect with nature, whether for a few hours or a night, South Fourche Campground offers a reliable and welcoming option right in our own backyard.
Customer Reviews
Very clean and well maintained daytime camping area. Honor system to use, $5 picnic tables, fire pit and charcoal grill at each parking space.
Stayed for one night while on my way to Buffalo National River. The site sits right on the highway and is loud with trucks driving by. Also, I'm not the nervous type. But you have zero concealment from the road. Seems like a perfect spot for a criminal element at night to do something stupid and disappear. Anyone riding by can see you. And in my case, that I was the only one there.
If you're solo, do NOT stay here. It was the only place in 7 years that I have packed up and left after setting up for the night. The garbage isn't the issue. It's the people. The site is literally on the highway, so any criminal can see you're alone, rob you, and be gone in a flash. Keep in mind that we were the only car in the loop when I say all this. Within 5 minutes of setting up two locals in a beat-up truck parked next to us, pretended to fish for a minute, asked if we were staying the night and then left. Shortly after, a group parked near us, went to the muddy lake for 30 seconds, mulled around, and then got in their car and slowly left. Which would be fine. But they refused to wave or make eye contact on several attempts. Even going so far as to turn their heads when they drove by, 8 feet away. The kicker was when a run-down pickup crept in. We waved as it passed, and a Charles Manson doppelganger stared at us wide eyed, while his girlfriend nodded out in the passenger seat. They parked in the camping spot right next to us. He shook the girl and said "we're here". We casually packed up. In the time being, they went over to the bathroom, door ajar, and either shot up or smoked meth. We left. I'll say it again, this is not a safe place to stay, especially if you're alone. The dead snake, with its head cut off down by the water, should have been an omen. Or the 14 empty mountain dew cans in the fire ring.
Beautiful! I'll be back for some fishing!
Nice, & CLEAN. Very Serene. Fishing & Camping are Allowed. Has NO Water, Bring your own just in case if needed. CLEAN Restrooms. Private Setting. A Place to Stretch your Legs after a Long Drive, or decide to Stay Overnight. Highly Recommend.
