Sunlight Bay Campground About
For many of us in Arkansas, the call of the wild means heading to the water, and for serious anglers and those seeking a quiet lakeside retreat, Sunlight Bay Campground near Plainview offers a compelling option. Situated on Wilson Slough, just off the Fourche LaFave River and leading into Nimrod Lake, this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Class A park provides a practical base for fishing, boating, and enjoying the serene beauty of the region. While some visitors might find it a quieter, more utilitarian spot compared to bustling recreational hubs, its primary appeal lies in its direct access to fantastic fishing waters and its well-equipped campsites.
Imagine the peaceful mornings by the water, the stunning cypress trees reflecting in the calm slough, and the anticipation of a good catch. Sunlight Bay Campground caters to those who prioritize these experiences. It’s a place where the focus is on the fishing and the tranquil atmosphere that surrounds Nimrod Lake, one of Arkansas's significant water resources. Whether you’re an experienced fisherman with your boat in tow or simply looking for a quiet place to unwind by the water, Sunlight Bay offers a no-frills, practical approach to lakeside camping.
It's important for local Arkansans to approach Sunlight Bay with an understanding of its specific offerings. While it boasts essential amenities like water and electricity, and is well-regarded by anglers, it may not offer the extensive recreational facilities, such as designated swimming areas or playgrounds right by the water, that some other campgrounds might. This distinction is crucial for setting expectations and ensuring your visit aligns with what Sunlight Bay excels at: providing a clean, accessible, and fisherman-friendly base for enjoying Nimrod Lake.
Sunlight Bay Campground is strategically located at 12394 Sunlight Bay Rd, Plainview, AR 72857, USA. This address places it directly on Wilson Slough, which is an arm of the Fourche LaFave River, just upstream from its confluence with Nimrod Lake. This positioning is key for its primary appeal: excellent access to Nimrod Lake's extensive fishing and boating opportunities.
For locals in Arkansas, reaching Sunlight Bay Campground is relatively straightforward. From Plainview, Arkansas, you can take Highway 28 west for approximately a quarter mile, and then follow the signs that lead directly into the campground. The roads leading to Sunlight Bay are typically well-maintained gravel or paved surfaces, allowing for easy access for most vehicles, including RVs and trailers. This convenient accessibility means less time on the road and more time enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
The location cradled between Arkansas's Ouachita and Ozark Mountains also adds to the scenic appeal, offering a backdrop of rolling hills and dense forests. While the campground itself is directly on the water, its connection to the larger Nimrod Lake system ensures that visitors have a vast expanse of water to explore. This makes it an ideal base for those in Central Arkansas and surrounding regions who value proximity to prime fishing and boating waters without the extensive travel associated with more distant destinations.
Sunlight Bay Campground, as a Class A USACE park, provides a range of essential services designed to offer comfort and convenience during your outdoor stay. These amenities are primarily geared towards supporting a comfortable camping experience, especially for those with RVs, while maintaining the natural setting.

- Water Hookups: Each campsite also includes potable water hookups, providing easy access to fresh water directly at your site. This eliminates the need to haul water or rely solely on central spigots.
- Flush Toilets: The campground features modern flush toilet facilities, offering a more comfortable restroom experience compared to primitive options.
- Hot Showers: Campers can enjoy the convenience of hot showers, a welcome amenity after a day of fishing or outdoor activities, ensuring a refreshing experience.

- Picnic Tables: Each campsite comes equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for outdoor dining, meal preparation, or simply relaxing.
- Grills/Fire Rings: Campsites include fire rings, often with grates, allowing for safe campfires and outdoor cooking. Visitors should always check for any burn bans or restrictions before lighting a fire.
- Boat Launch Ramps: Direct access to Nimrod Lake is provided via boat launch ramps, essential for anglers and boaters looking to get on the water quickly.
- Fish Cleaning Station: A convenient fish cleaning station is available, a popular amenity for anglers to process their catch efficiently and hygienically.
- Visitor Protection: The presence of visitor protection services helps ensure a safe and secure environment for all campers and day-use visitors.
- Playground: A playground is available within the recreation area, providing a designated space for children to play and enjoy their time outdoors.
Sunlight Bay Campground boasts several features and highlights that make it particularly appealing, especially for those prioritizing specific outdoor activities and a serene setting. While some traditional recreational amenities might be less prominent, its unique attributes stand out.
- Exceptional Fishing on Nimrod Lake: This is arguably Sunlight Bay's greatest strength. Nimrod Lake is renowned among Arkansans for its excellent fishing, with abundant populations of catfish, bluegill, bass, and crappie. The campground's location on Wilson Slough provides prime access to these fishing grounds, making it a dream destination for anglers. The lake level generally remains consistent, providing reliable fishing conditions.
- Stunning Cypress Trees and Scenic Water Views: The area is characterized by beautiful cypress trees, which add a unique and picturesque quality to the landscape. The water is often described as "pretty," contributing to a tranquil and visually appealing environment, perfect for photography or simply enjoying the natural scenery.
- Direct Water Access for Boating and Kayaking: With boat launch ramps available, Sunlight Bay is an ideal base for boating, kayaking, and canoeing. While strong winds can be a factor, especially for smaller craft like kayaks, the direct access to Nimrod Lake allows for extensive exploration of its waters.
- Well-Maintained Class A Facilities: As a USACE Class A campground, Sunlight Bay provides a high standard of cleanliness and maintenance for its core facilities. This includes clean flush toilets, hot showers, and a functioning dump station, which are crucial comforts for extended stays.
- Spacious Sites with Hookups: The 29 campsites are described as spacious, offering plenty of room for setup. The presence of water and electric hookups at every site provides modern convenience, allowing campers to power their RVs and access fresh water directly at their spot.
- Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere (Off-Season): During the off-season, Sunlight Bay is particularly peaceful, offering a serene escape for those seeking quiet contemplation and a break from crowds. This makes it an excellent choice for a calming retreat when fishing is the primary focus.
- Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The surrounding 21,000 acres of land around Nimrod Lake are home to diverse wildlife. Visitors have opportunities to spot white-tailed deer, eastern wild turkey, various bird species, and other native animals, enhancing the natural experience.
As a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) managed campground, Sunlight Bay Campground does not offer traditional commercial "promotions" or seasonal sales in the same way a private business might. However, it does provide standardized fee structures and accessibility programs that can be considered significant "offers" for local Arkansans looking for value and affordable outdoor recreation.
The primary "offer" is the consistent and competitive pricing for its Class A amenities. Fees typically involve a daily use fee of $5 for accessing the day-use area and specific amenities. For overnight camping, sites with water and electrical hookups are priced to cover the costs of these services and facility maintenance. It's always advisable to check the official Recreation.gov website or contact the Nimrod Lake Project Office for the most current fee schedules, as these can be subject to change.
For frequent visitors to USACE parks, the Annual Day Use Pass is an excellent "special offer." Priced at $30 per year, this pass provides unlimited access to boat launches and day-use areas at multiple USACE-managed facilities, including Sunlight Bay. This can result in significant savings for local Arkansans who regularly utilize these parks for fishing, boating, or picnicking throughout the year.
Additionally, holders of federal interagency passes, such as the America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass or Access Pass, receive valuable discounts. These passes offer a 50 percent reduction on camping fees and day use fees for eligible U.S. citizens or permanent residents (aged 62 or older for the Senior Pass, or with a permanent disability for the Access Pass). This makes camping at Sunlight Bay even more affordable for qualifying individuals.
While not a direct promotion, making reservations well in advance, especially during peak seasons, can be considered a strategy to "secure" your preferred site, as Sunlight Bay is popular among its niche audience. Reservations can be made through the National Reservation Service at 1-877-444-6777 or via the Recreation.gov website.
For the most precise and up-to-date information on fees, pass eligibility, and reservation policies, always consult the official USACE website or Recreation.gov.
For any inquiries regarding Sunlight Bay Campground, including campsite availability, current conditions, or specific amenities, the most direct and reliable contact method is through the Nimrod Lake Project Office, which oversees the recreation area.

For the dedicated angler, Sunlight Bay is a true gem. Its direct access to Nimrod Lake, known for its excellent fishing, makes it an ideal base camp. The presence of a fish cleaning station further enhances the experience for those looking to enjoy their catch. Boaters and kayakers will also appreciate the easy access to the water, allowing for full days spent on the lake exploring.
The Class A amenities, including water and electric hookups at every site, flush toilets, and hot showers, provide a comfortable and convenient camping experience, especially for RV owners. This means locals can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors without completely roughing it, which is often preferred for family trips or longer stays.
While some reviews mention a lack of extensive recreational facilities like playgrounds or swim areas directly by the campsites, this can be an advantage for those seeking a quieter atmosphere. If your primary goal is to fish, boat, or simply relax amidst scenic natural beauty, away from the hustle and bustle, Sunlight Bay offers that serene environment. The picturesque cypress trees add a unique charm, creating a peaceful backdrop for relaxation.
Moreover, being a USACE campground, it maintains a high standard of cleanliness and offers affordable access, especially with the availability of annual passes and federal discounts. This makes it a practical and budget-friendly choice for Arkansans who frequently engage in lakeside activities.
In conclusion, Sunlight Bay Campground is a perfect fit for Arkansans who love to fish, boat, and appreciate a tranquil, well-equipped camping spot focused on natural beauty. It’s a reliable destination for a relaxing and productive outdoor escape right here in our own backyard.
Customer Reviews
There's water and electricity at the sites and a $5 day use fee. But, there isn't much to do. The water is pretty and the cypress trees are gorgeous, but there isn't anywhere to swim and there isn't a playground or rec area down by the water or picnic tables. All the grills were flipped up and we were told by a worker that it was because they were closed. The restrooms are also closed. We took the kayaks out but the wind was so strong that it wasn't particularly safe for the kids. We spent the whole time at camp chasing our stuff and trees kept falling all around us. An entire tree fell just behind our car, we had to drive down the side of the campsite to get out because it blocked us in. Barely missed my kiddos! The area looks like it has been timber harvested and the shade is pretty much non-existent now. We were pretty miserable here. Go to Spring Lake or Dardanelle (or Ouachita!).
First time at this park...it was a Beautiful park of course it's the off season. If your a fisherman this is the place to stay.
Intimate, secluded, relaxing. Each space was comfortably sized with great rv hook ups (dump station and dumpster at the front gate). if you are tent camping, bring a good pad as some spots have minimal grass. Real showers and flush toilets are always a plus. Camp hosts were very friendly and responsive. Loved the dog friendly atmosphere although, as usual, there's always one w/ reactive barkers they kept outside and a loud voiced adult (kids get to be loud). Playground, boat launch and stainless cleaning station for fishing, superior fire grates and kitchen shelf. Walking trails and a diner a short drive, 15 minutes to a DG if you need something. We'll be back.
Don't go here. The bathrooms are unbelievably filthy, never saw the host, nothing good about this place.
Nice clean bathroom and all was nice except the flies would drive you crazy
