Southport Campground About

Introduction / Overview

For Alabamians looking to experience the vibrant coastal charm of Gulf Shores, finding a campground that balances location, amenities, and value is often a key part of planning their trip. Southport Campground, located at 108 Waterway W Blvd, Gulf Shores, AL 36542, USA, presents itself as an option for both short and long-term stays, promising convenience and a competitive price point in this popular destination.

As a campground, Southport offers various site types, including options for RVs and tents, aiming to cater to a diverse range of campers. Its location near the Intracoastal Waterway and proximity to local attractions are often highlighted as significant advantages. However, it's important for prospective visitors to be aware that customer experiences at Southport Campground appear to be quite varied, with some reviews praising the owner and location, while others express significant concerns about the condition and functionality of certain facilities, particularly the restrooms and showers. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and factual overview, drawing from both the positive and critical public feedback, to help you make an informed decision about whether Southport Campground is the right fit for your next Alabama coastal adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Southport Campground boasts a prime location in Gulf Shores, Alabama, which is a significant draw for many visitors. Situated at 108 Waterway W Blvd, Gulf Shores, AL 36542, USA, the campground offers excellent accessibility to the region's main attractions. Its position along the Waterway West Boulevard means it's conveniently close to the Intracoastal Waterway, providing a scenic backdrop and potential access for water-related activities.

Crucially, Southport Campground is well-placed for accessing the renowned white sand beaches of Gulf Shores. While not directly beachfront, the short drive to the public beaches ensures that visitors can easily enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and various water sports. The central location also means that popular local restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues are within easy reach, allowing campers to experience the best of Gulf Shores without extensive travel. For those arriving by RV, the address on Waterway West Boulevard provides straightforward access from main roads, making it relatively easy to navigate even for larger rigs. This blend of proximity to both natural attractions and urban conveniences makes Southport Campground's location a significant highlight for any traveler looking to explore the Alabama coast.

Services Offered

Southport Campground aims to provide essential services for a comfortable camping experience, though the functionality and condition of some of these services have been subject to mixed reviews. Based on available public information, here are the services you might expect:

  • RV Sites with Hookups: The campground offers sites for recreational vehicles, presumably with standard hookups (electric, water, sewer), which are fundamental for RV camping.
  • Tent Sites: In addition to RV sites, Southport Campground also accommodates tent campers, providing a more traditional and rustic camping experience for those without an RV.
  • Bath House Facilities: A bath house is available, providing restrooms and showers for guests. However, it's important to note that multiple reviews have critically mentioned issues with the bath house, specifically regarding lack of hot water, low water pressure in showers, and overall cleanliness, with one review advising guests to "bring your own toilet paper."
  • Laundromat: An on-site laundromat is mentioned as being available and conveniently accessible. This is a highly valued amenity for both short and long-term campers, allowing for clothes washing without leaving the campground.
  • Fishing Dock: For those who enjoy angling, the campground offers a fishing dock on the canal, providing a direct opportunity for recreational fishing.
  • Clubhouse for Guest Use (with caveats): A "clubhouse for guest use" is mentioned, though one review specifically states it is "never open," suggesting its availability or functionality may be unreliable.
  • Accommodating Staff/Owner: One positive review specifically highlights "Sandy, the owner," as being "very accommodating and genuinely nice," suggesting a personal touch in customer service.

It is crucial for prospective guests to be aware of the conflicting feedback regarding the condition and reliability of the bath house and clubhouse. While the services are listed, the actual user experience may vary.

Features / Highlights

Southport Campground, despite its varied reviews, offers several features that could be considered highlights for certain campers, particularly those prioritizing location and value:

  • Prime Gulf Shores Location: Its most significant asset is its placement in Gulf Shores, providing easy access to the area's famous white sand beaches, dining, shopping, and entertainment. This convenience is paramount for many visitors.
  • Canal-Side Fishing Dock: The presence of a fishing dock on the canal is a clear highlight for anglers, offering immediate access to fishing opportunities directly from the campground.
  • Competitive and Consistent Pricing: One review specifically notes that "prices don't change all year and that's the way it should be," suggesting stable and potentially competitive rates compared to other campgrounds in a popular tourist destination like Gulf Shores. This can be a significant advantage for budget-conscious travelers.
  • Accommodates Both RVs and Tents: The park's ability to host both RVs and traditional tent campers makes it versatile and accessible to a wider range of outdoor enthusiasts.
  • Long-Term Stay Potential: Positive feedback mentions it being a "perfect location for short or long term stays," indicating flexibility for different travel plans.
  • Friendly and Accommodating Owner/Staff (based on some reviews): While experiences vary, some reviews highlight the owner, Sandy, as being "very accommodating and genuinely nice," which contributes positively to the guest experience.
  • Access to Laundromat: The availability of an on-site laundromat, despite reported issues with functionality, is a convenient feature for extended stays.

It's important to weigh these highlights against the mentioned concerns about facility maintenance, as the appeal will depend heavily on individual priorities and expectations for a camping experience.

Promotions or Special Offers

Based on the provided information, Southport Campground's "promotions" appear to revolve more around a consistent and competitive pricing structure rather than advertised seasonal deals or traditional discounts. One review specifically states, "Granted your prices don't change all year and that's the way it should be." This suggests a philosophy of stable, year-round rates that are intended to be competitive in the Gulf Shores market.

While specific percentage discounts (like AAA or Good Sam) are not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews, it's always advisable for prospective campers to inquire directly with the campground about any potential affiliations or standing discounts they might offer. Many independently owned campgrounds do participate in programs like Passport America or provide discounts for military personnel, seniors, or extended stays (e.g., weekly or monthly rates). The "best and most competitive price in all of Gulf Shores" claim in one review suggests that their pricing strategy itself is a form of ongoing offer to attract guests seeking value.

Therefore, while you might not see advertised "specials," the competitive pricing and potential for long-term rates are the main "offers" to consider at Southport Campground. The best way to learn about the current rates for your specific needs (RV size, length of stay) and any available unadvertised discounts is to contact them directly via phone.

Contact Information

To get the most accurate and up-to-date information, or to make a reservation at Southport Campground, direct communication with the park is recommended. While one review noted difficulty in reaching them by phone for inquiries, providing both a primary and mobile number suggests multiple contact points.

  • Address: 108 Waterway W Blvd, Gulf Shores, AL 36542, USA
  • Primary Phone: (251) 968-6220
  • Mobile Phone: +1 251-968-6220

When calling, it would be beneficial to have your desired dates, type of site (RV or tent), and any specific questions you may have regarding amenities or recent conditions (e.g., status of bath house, hot water availability) prepared. This will help you manage expectations and ensure the park can meet your needs for a comfortable stay in Gulf Shores.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Alabamians seeking a camping getaway to the beloved Gulf Shores area, Southport Campground presents a nuanced but potentially suitable option. Its greatest strength for locals lies in its prime location. Being situated on Waterway West Boulevard means convenient access to the heart of Gulf Shores, placing you just a short drive from the famous white sand beaches, popular restaurants, and lively attractions. This accessibility is invaluable for residents looking for a quick and easy escape to the coast without spending excessive time commuting once they've arrived.

Furthermore, for those who enjoy fishing, the on-site dock on the canal offers a direct and effortless opportunity to cast a line, a significant perk for local anglers. The claim of having "the best and most competitive price in all of Gulf Shores" is also a powerful draw for Alabama residents who frequently visit the area and are always on the lookout for good value. While the reviews regarding the condition of amenities like the bath house and clubhouse are indeed mixed, some locals might be more inclined to overlook these if their primary focus is on an affordable base camp close to the Gulf's main attractions, especially if they are largely self-contained in their RVs or prefer a more rustic camping experience. For Alabamians prioritizing location and value for money in a bustling tourist destination, and who are prepared to be flexible with certain on-site facilities, Southport Campground remains a viable and strategically located choice for enjoying everything the Alabama Gulf Coast has to offer.

What a dump. Bring your own toilet paper for the bathroom. Not one shower stall had water pressure or hot water. The sinks got hot but who can fit in them to bathe themselves. The faucet's and toilets need replacing. Very disappointed, nothing beautiful about the over priced tent site with no working amenities and your clubhouse for guest use is never open. You can't answer the phone for inquiries. Commit100 percent or quit. Plenty of people would love to do something amazing with it. Granted your prices don't change all year and that's the way it should be. But come on get in it or move on. This is a beautiful town.

Southport is arguably the best campground to stay at. Sandy, the owner, is very accommodating and genuinely nice. With convient access to the laundromat and bath house, it is the perfect location for short or long term stays. And if you like fishing there is a dock on the canal you can fish off of. You will not find a better location and the price is the best and most competitive in all of gulf shores.

Not sure why the handful of poor reviews here. We stayed here for a couple of days during Mardi Gras 2024. Sandy and the rest of the people here were so genuinely kind to us the entire time. For two older female campers, we felt very safe there. I would call this more of a seasonal campground but it was reasonably priced, a great location to watch the sunset and surprisingly, the bridge traffic wasn't bad at all. And Im a light sleeper. Its not fancy but i would definitely recommend this place.
