For many Minnesotans, the idea of a local camping getaway often conjures images of serene lakes, crackling campfires, and vibrant outdoor activities. In our beautiful state, numerous campgrounds offer diverse experiences, catering to various preferences. One such local option is Sportsman’s Campground, located in Janesville, Minnesota. Situated in the heart of Southern Minnesota, this campground provides a local destination for those seeking a convenient escape. This article aims to offer a clear and informative overview of Sportsman's Campground, drawing from available public information and recent customer feedback, to help users in the Minnesota region understand what to expect when considering this spot for their next outdoor adventure.

Sportsman's Campground, while perhaps not offering the extensive amenities of a large resort, positions itself as a community-oriented camping spot. Understanding its features, location, and the experiences of previous visitors is crucial for potential campers. It’s important to note that like any property, campgrounds can evolve, especially under new ownership. Recent reviews indicate a period of transition, with both challenges and potential for future improvements. Our goal here is to present a balanced view, highlighting the factual aspects and publicly available details to help you make an informed decision for your Minnesota camping plans. This overview will delve into the practicalities of visiting, from its geographical placement to its current offerings, providing a realistic picture for local users.

The location of Sportsman’s Campground is 40050 30th St, Janesville, MN 56048, USA. Janesville is a community located in Waseca County, Minnesota, positioning the campground in the beautiful southern part of our state. This makes it a relatively accessible drive for many Minnesotans, particularly those residing in the southern and central regions.

According to official listings, Sportsman's Campground is located "just a block south from Lake Elysian," which is a significant highlight for water enthusiasts. This proximity to Lake Elysian suggests potential for activities like fishing, although recent feedback from a visitor indicated a lack of direct lake access from the campground itself, which is an important point for clarification upon inquiry. The campground is also described as being "two miles north of Janesville," meaning that the town's local amenities are within a short driving distance. Janesville itself offers basic conveniences, local dining options, and a small-town atmosphere that many campers appreciate as a supplement to their outdoor experience. For those traveling by RV or car, the drive to the campground is generally straightforward, placing it within reasonable reach for a weekend or short-term stay for a significant portion of Minnesota residents.

Based on available public data and recent reviews, Sportsman’s Campground offers several key services and amenities, though some have received mixed feedback regarding their current condition or availability.

  • Electric Campsites: The campground advertises 8 campsites with electric hookups. This is a crucial amenity for RV campers and those who rely on power for their equipment, offering essential convenience.
  • Washrooms: Public washrooms are available at the campground. However, recent reviews suggest that these facilities may not always be well-maintained, which is an important consideration for visitors.
  • Picnic Shelter: A communal picnic shelter is provided, offering a covered space for gatherings, meals, or shelter during inclement weather.
  • Ground Grills: Individual ground grills are likely available at campsites, allowing for traditional campfire cooking and grilling.
  • Playground Equipment: There is a children's playground available on site. Recent feedback, however, indicates that the playground may be in need of attention.
  • Basketball Court: A basketball court is listed as an amenity, providing recreational opportunities for guests. Similar to the playground, its condition has been noted as needing improvement.
  • Bike Trail Access: The campground is associated with a 3-mile hard surface bike trail, offering opportunities for cycling enthusiasts to explore the local area.
  • Fishing Piers and Boat Launch: While one review noted a lack of direct lake access from the campground, official listings for "Sportsmans Park Campground" in Janesville often mention fishing piers and a boat launch nearby, suggesting access to water activities in the broader area. This would likely be through a public access point rather than directly from the campground.
  • Pets Allowed: Official listings indicate that pets are allowed in campsites, which is a significant convenience for campers traveling with their furry companions.

Considering the available information and recent customer feedback, Sportsman’s Campground presents several features and highlights, though some aspects currently pose challenges.

  • Proximity to Lake Elysian: Despite comments about direct access, the campground's location "just a block south from Lake Elysian" provides a positive geographic setting for lake-oriented activities in the general vicinity. Lake Elysian itself is known for fishing and boating opportunities.
  • Affordable Option: While not explicitly stated, campgrounds that are smaller and offer basic amenities often present a more affordable camping option compared to larger resorts. This could appeal to budget-conscious Minnesotan campers.
  • Bike and Walking Trails: The 3-mile hard surface bike trail and general walking trails provide excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation directly from or very near the campground, encouraging active stays.
  • Small-Town Charm of Janesville: The campground offers proximity to the town of Janesville, allowing campers to easily access local dining establishments, grocery stores, and experience a small-town Minnesota atmosphere.
  • Potential for Improvement: Despite recent negative feedback, the fact that there are established amenities like a playground, basketball court, and a pool (though its condition has been questioned) suggests a foundation for improvement under committed ownership. A recent news article from September 2024 mentions new ownership (Grant and Anna Wildgrube) since 2022 and plans for growth, including adding more campsites and addressing access issues. This indicates an active effort to revitalize the campground.
  • Community Events (Historical): While reviews mention a decline in organized activities, past offerings like "movies, bingo, DJ party, and other activities every weekend" suggest a previous commitment to community engagement, which could potentially be revived in the future.

Based on the provided information and recent public data, there are no specific, formalized promotions or special offers widely advertised for Sportsman's Campground. The customer reviews primarily focus on the current state of amenities and management rather than promotional deals. However, for campgrounds of this nature, especially those undergoing transitions or improvements, "promotions" can often take the form of competitive pricing for their basic offerings.

Given the feedback about declining quality and issues with maintenance and staff attitude under new ownership, any "promotion" from the perspective of a potential visitor would come from the hope of significant improvements. The Waseca County Pioneer article from September 2024, mentioning "new ownership" (Grant Wildgrube and his wife Anna since 2022) and their plans for "growth" and "additions of 13 new campsites," could be seen as an informal "offer" of future value. They are "looking for more information" to make the campground better.

For the most current information on rates, availability, and to inquire about any specific offers that might be in place, it is always recommended to contact Sportsman's Campground directly. It's possible that as they continue to implement improvements, specific promotions or loyalty programs might be introduced to attract new and returning campers.

Considering the current public information, Sportsman’s Campground in Janesville, Minnesota, presents a mixed but potentially evolving option for locals. Its suitability hinges on a camper's priorities and willingness to inquire about current conditions. For Minnesotans seeking a very affordable, conveniently located camping spot with electric hookups and access to biking trails, it could still serve as a viable option, particularly if they prioritize basic utility connections over extensive amenities and are prepared for a more rustic experience in some areas.

The positive aspect of its location near Lake Elysian and the town of Janesville offers opportunities for fishing (via public access points) and exploring local community charm. While past reviews highlight concerns regarding maintenance, activities, and a nearby pig farm smell, recent news suggests active efforts by new ownership to address these issues and expand the campground. This indicates a potential for future improvement that could enhance its suitability for local campers. I had high hopes for this campground as an alternative to the one near Maddison Lake, but I was very disappointed. Unfortunately, there was no lake access, extremely limited parking, and the bathrooms and pool were not well-maintained. The kids' playground and basketball court seemed to be in need of some attention as well. And finally, the strong smell from the nearby pig farm was quite overwhelming 🤢🤢🤢. Overall, I would recommend addressing these issues to improve the overall experience for visitors."

This campground has significantly declined in quality under new ownership. We've been loyal campers here for years, but the recent changes have been disappointing. Although small, the campground lacks essential amenities. (adequate drainage - meaning even slightly heavy rain leaves the campsites flooded and unusable for a few days if you don't want a damage fee for uprooted grass. What used to be movies, bingo, DJ party, and other activities every weekend quickly stopped. Unfortunately, the staff's attitude has become unaccommodating and inhospitable. It's disheartening to witness a once-excellent campground deteriorate so rapidly.

Used to be a fun place but now just trashy since the new owners. We’ve been camping here for a couple years and with the new owners things went downhill very quickly. Tiny campground with very little amenities. Staff is extremely rude and unwelcoming. Sad to see what was a great campground turn awful so quickly.

Reply to the owner You (the owner) helped pull our camper out of a completely unusable site. You simply had to lay dirt and rocks after the flooding Do you control allowing your friends to use our site so they “can be closer their friends?” ILLEGAL!!! The quality of this campground has markedly declined since its change in ownership. As long-time campers, we have observed several disappointing modifications. The campground's limited size is compounded by a lack of basic amenities, such as sufficient drainage, which renders campsites unusable following moderate rain and risks incurring damage fees for grass disruption if you need to move your camper for any reason during this. The abrupt stop of weekend activities, formerly including movies, bingo, and DJ parties, has also detracted from the experience. Sadly, the staff's demeanor has become uninviting and uncooperative, souring the campground's from its once joy filled.

Great little family run campground! When our Original reservation at land of memories was canceled due to flooding, this little campground fit us in to their group site with just two of us. The swimming pool was a very nice and had a lifeguard during the day. The bathrooms and showers were clean anytime that we entered them. The front desk staff was very helpful and kind. I would definitely recommend this campground if you are in the area.
