As a Des Moines County Conservation park, Sycamore Loop operates on a first-come, first-served basis for all campsites. This means that reservations are generally not accepted in advance. Its prime location along the Skunk River within the expansive Welter Recreation Area offers an accessible escape into nature without requiring extensive travel. For us Iowans, the blend of both electric and non-electric sites means it caters to a wide array of camping preferences, from those who prefer the comforts of an RV with hookups to traditional tent campers seeking a more rustic experience. The consistently praised "quiet and clean" environment resonates deeply with locals who are often looking for a peaceful retreat from daily life, rather than an overly crowded or commercialized campground. The promise of "always a spot" (as noted by a reviewer) is a significant advantage, especially for spontaneous weekend trips when pre-booking isnens't an option. Furthermore, the presence of a "Nice Host" speaks to the welcoming and supportive community feel that Iowans appreciate. The various activities available, from fishing and paddling on the Skunk River to the simple pleasure of a campfire under the stars, make it a versatile destination for families, solo adventurers, and groups alike. We paid for tent camping and found it was so packed we went back home. Everyone was crammed together and you had to stay on the very few lots provided. I wouldn't recommend unless you don't mind being elbow to elbow with everyone. Will not be returning and were out $10
