Introduction / Overview
For New Hampshire locals who truly crave an escape into the wild, **Thirteen Falls Tentsite** is a renowned destination that delivers absolute solitude and pristine natural beauty. Tucked away deep within the expansive and legendary Pemigewasset Wilderness Area of the White Mountain National Forest, this site is far from any paved road or conventional campground, requiring a substantial trek to reach. It’s an essential waypoint for experienced backpackers undertaking multi-day traverses through the Pemi and serves as a rewarding destination in its own right for a restorative, off-grid experience.
The name "Thirteen Falls" refers both to the designated tentsite and the series of lovely cascades and pools found along Franconia Brook nearby—not necessarily 13 distinct waterfalls, but a continuous stretch of scenic water features that capture the untouched spirit of the region. Managed in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, this Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) operated tentsite is designed specifically to concentrate human impact, thereby protecting the fragile wilderness ecosystem. It offers a structured yet rustic experience for those committed to Leave No Trace principles and self-sufficient camping. It is the perfect spot to disconnect, recharge, and immerse yourself fully in the rugged heart of the Granite State’s mountains, far from the crowds that often frequent easier-to-access trails.

Hiked in from Franconia Brook Trail. Excellent back country tensite with earthen pads, bear boxes, snazzy outhouse, and tarped cooking area. Caretaker was great. Excellent swimming hole nearby as well as neat water features. Fee is 15.00 per night. Thanks A.M.C

Jun 03, 2018 · Kris AhlstromOverall a great 2 day 1 night hiking/camping trip. Hiked to Thirteen Falls via the Franconia Brook Trail, and back via the Lincoln Brook Trail. The way back (via Lincoln Brook trail) was much longer than the way in (via Franconia Brook trail), but much more rewarding as well! Franconia Brook trail for the most part follows an old rail bed, so it is straight and wide but not super natural. The Lincoln Brook trail, on the other hand, is more like a single-track trail, more natural, has more ups and downs and is more scenic. The short out and back to Franconia Falls is worthwhile if you're looking for great views and a nice swim. Thirteen Fall campsite was nice enough. The sites aren't isolated from each other, being 30-50 feet part and because there are a lot of downed trees (probably deliberately cut to protect the campers). Many thanks to the AMC for maintaining this site! Bugs were not bad at all on this trip, although I did use bug spray a few times.
Jul 11, 2020 · Brandon FarleyThirteen falls is a nice little tentsite deep in the Pemigewasset Wilderness. I've stayed overnight twice and enjoyed both stays. Despite its secluded location it is easy to get to and well maintained. The cascades and waterfalls around the tentsite are worth checking out. Only downsides are some of the tent pads are a little rough and there is a $10 fee per person to stay here. Bearboxes are a convenient feature this far out in the woods though. Overall, the experience was very enjoyable and I would do it again.
Feb 07, 2018 · Ian AyerThis site is a HOT MESS! We hiked in on 8/12/22 with the intention of setting up camp, doing a small hike in the afternoon and maybe 1st thing in the AM and then hiking out the next day. We were met by Forestry Personnel who said that the bear boxes have been destroyed (by bears) and that bears have been coming into the camp all day and expect them to be around all night. Adding to the mess - the caretaker had been MIA for a couple of days! Needless to say - we changed into fresh socks and marched out the same day - for a combined 13 mile hike with full packs. AMC really missed the mark here.
