For Texans dreaming of a spacious and serene getaway in the picturesque Hill Country, Thousand Trails Medina Lake offers an inviting escape. Nestled near the scenic Medina Lake in Lakehills, this campground provides a generous and spread-out environment where you can truly unwind and connect with nature. It's often described as a "nice campground" with sites that "feel very secluded," offering a tranquil experience even when relatively busy. The "Wilderness vibe" is a consistent highlight for those who appreciate a more natural setting.
Thousand Trails Medina Lake stands out for its expansive layout and abundance of amenities, catering to both relaxation and recreation. While the lake's water levels can fluctuate significantly (and have been historically low, possibly not seeing much water since 2017, currently around 2.5% full as of June 2025), impacting direct water access, the campground itself remains a beautiful and engaging destination. Visitors consistently praise the large sites, the peaceful atmosphere, the huge pool, and the frequent sightings of friendly deer, adding a unique charm to every stay. Even with some acknowledged challenges regarding site maintenance due to potential staff shortages and turnover, the overall "vibe of the park is private, peaceful, and quiet," making it a beloved choice for many.
Whether you're looking for a quiet place to relax, an active base for exploring the Hill Country, or a family-friendly spot with plenty of activities, Thousand Trails Medina Lake aims to deliver. It’s a place where you can enjoy the vast open spaces, utilize the excellent facilities, and create lasting memories amidst the stunning Texas landscape. While site upkeep can be inconsistent, as noted by some, the natural, overgrown beauty is also part of its appeal, contributing to that desirable "Wilderness vibe." For those who prioritize peace and space, this campground offers a truly unique experience.
Thousand Trails Medina Lake is ideally situated at 215 Spettle Rd, Lakehills, TX 78063, USA. This location places it in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, offering a blend of natural beauty and convenient access to popular attractions.
The campground is located northwest of San Antonio, making it a perfect home base for day trips to explore the Alamo City's rich history, vibrant Riverwalk, and exciting theme parks like Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld. Austin, with its unique music scene and cultural attractions, is also within a reasonable driving distance for a day trip. The proximity to major highways allows for relatively easy travel from various parts of Texas, ensuring that your journey to relaxation is as smooth as possible.
While the resort offers a sense of seclusion, it is still accessible to local conveniences in Lakehills, ensuring you can easily pick up supplies or enjoy local dining. A local gem, "Out of the Way Cafe," is a "must" for its "delicious food," according to a recent review, and is conveniently located "down the road." Although directly on Medina Lake, transparency regarding the lake's water levels is often mentioned by guests; it has been very low, often described as "hardly ever full" and potentially not seeing significant water since 2017. Current data confirms Medina Lake is at a historically low level, around 2.5% full in June 2025. However, this does not detract from the beauty of the surrounding natural environment, with "tons of natural flowers and plants, even mullein as well as wild deer" to enjoy on the property itself. The spread-out nature of the campground means that while it's walkable, a bike or golf cart can greatly enhance your exploration of its vast grounds. Be aware that some internal roads may have ruts and holes, requiring careful navigation, especially for big rigs.

For Texans, Thousand Trails Medina Lake offers a compelling blend of accessibility, natural beauty, and robust amenities that make it an ideal choice for both short getaways and extended stays. Its suitability for locals is rooted in several key factors that cater directly to the desires of Texas residents.
Firstly, its prime location in the Texas Hill Country, northwest of San Antonio, is a significant advantage. Texans value the Hill Country's unique landscapes, rolling terrains, and abundant wildlife. Thousand Trails Medina Lake allows locals to immerse themselves in this quintessential Texas environment without requiring extensive travel. Being less than an hour's drive from San Antonio means residents can easily escape for a weekend retreat, knowing that urban conveniences and world-class attractions like Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld are still within easy day-trip reach. This balance of secluded natural beauty and urban accessibility is a major draw for Texans looking to maximize their leisure time.
Secondly, the spacious and secluded campsites are a major highlight for RVers and campers who appreciate privacy and room to breathe. Unlike more crowded parks, the generous site sizes at Medina Lake allow Texans to truly spread out, set up their outdoor living spaces, and enjoy the peace and quiet. The abundant and friendly deer that roam freely across the grounds provide a unique and enchanting wildlife experience right outside your RV door, a simple pleasure that resonates deeply with those who love the Texas outdoors. While some sites may require personal mowing or weed-eating due to staff shortages, for many RVers who cherish a true "wilderness vibe" and self-sufficiency, this is a minor trade-off for the privacy and space offered.
Furthermore, the wide array of amenities and planned activities ensures there's something for every family member, making it suitable for multi-generational visits. The large swimming pool and hot tub offer a refreshing escape from the Texas heat, while facilities like the activity center, mini-golf, and sports courts provide endless entertainment. For Texans seeking a community feel, the organized weekend activities and the on-site "Top of the Trail Café" foster opportunities for social interaction and shared experiences. Even with fluctuating lake levels, the resort provides plenty of non-water-based activities to keep everyone engaged and happy.
Finally, for Texans who are frequent RVers or considering a long-term RV lifestyle, the Thousand Trails membership model can offer incredible value. The ability to camp without nightly fees at numerous locations, including this beautiful Medina Lake resort, can lead to significant savings over time. This makes it a smart and sustainable choice for locals who frequently explore their state in an RV, transforming weekend trips into regular, cost-effective escapes.
In conclusion, Thousand Trails Medina Lake provides Texans with a well-rounded and appealing camping experience. It’s a place where the grandeur of the Hill Country meets comfort and community, offering a reliable and enjoyable escape for local families and individuals alike, who appreciate its peaceful atmosphere and natural charm, understanding that its "wilderness vibe" comes with a certain rustic appeal.

I am giving this park 5 stars because the vibe of the park is private, peaceful, and quiet. As another person commented in their review, Medina Lake definitely has that Wilderness vibe which I liked. I read the reviews that the lake was dried up but that's not why I came here. There are lots of beautiful deer to watch, the park is very large, so tons of walking available, the pool is huge, and staff is nice. Out of the Way Cafe down the road is a must. Their food is delicious! So here comes the "however." This park has so much potential but they do not maintain their sites, meaning, no one mows or trims the sites to prepare for the incoming RVer. Grass is literally thigh high and I am not exaggerating. I could post pictures but I'm not like that. I heard they have staff shortage and turnover but they do have a tractor with a mower on the back of it that can easily mow a site in less than 2 minutes. One day, I saw what I thought was going to be a lawn mowing day but turned out to be a guy cutting through the site literally leaving a mow mark and then left. He literally is driving the tractor and not manually pushing it. I was shocked. You have a machine to do the work for you! I understand you are short-staffed but it doesn't take a lot of coordination to maintain and mow sites as RVers come and go especially when you have only 40 sites occupied. First impressions are EVERYTHING!!! Painting the ranger station at the front gate was not a priority, maintaining and mowing your sites are. So to those RVers visiting Medina Lake, BYOM, bring your own mower, or BYOW, bring your own weed eater. You will need it. Happy RVing and safe travels!
Jun 02, 2025 · RV AdventurerThe RV park is nice and clean . Lots of run down areas and destroyed houses and trailers out side the park. Lake is empty due to no rain. More trash cans around would be nice. Pool not heated
Feb 28, 2025 · Pam AndersonThe staff is great, but the campground needs some updating. Unfortunately, there is no Lake Medina, nor has there been for several years. Plenty of wildlife, with deer coming right to the campsites.
Jan 14, 2025 · Patti AckermanNo water in the lake but still a nice quiet place to get away for a while. The facilities are well kept and clean and the staff is always friendly and helpful.
Mar 26, 2025 · Jimmy MayThis is my second trip to this park. I love the whole feel of the place! The deer are a welcome treat to watch and coming here when it's not crowded was great. I felt i had the whole place to myself
