1889 RV Park About

Are you a Pennsylvania RVer seeking a convenient and comfortable stop on your journey, or perhaps a home base for exploring the rich history and natural beauty of the Johnstown area? Look no further than 1889 RV Park in South Fork, PA. Described by visitors as a "Great small park that can accommodate all size units," this RV destination offers essential amenities, a friendly atmosphere, and an unbeatable location for history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts alike. While every park has its quirks, 1889 RV Park stands out for its practicality and its connection to a significant piece of Pennsylvania's past.

1889 RV Park is more than just a place to park your recreational vehicle; it's part of a larger community park, offering additional recreational opportunities right on site. This integration with "the 1889 Park right there with pavilions and playgrounds" means that campers have access to more than just their individual site. It provides a unique blend of RV convenience with the family-friendly amenities often found in municipal parks. For Pennsylvania families traveling with children, this can be a significant advantage, offering space for kids to play and parents to relax after a day of driving or exploring.

One of the most appealing aspects, as highlighted by a recent guest, is the straightforward experience it offers: "Easy in and easy out park." This speaks to the park's design and accessibility, making it stress-free for RVers of all experience levels to navigate, regardless of their unit size. The positive interaction with staff is also a strong indicator of a welcoming environment. The reviewer's comment, "Jeff was awesome and gave us some history and some points we shouldn’t miss," suggests that the park's team goes above and beyond to make guests feel at home and help them discover the local area. This personal touch can truly enhance a camping experience.

While acknowledging some minor drawbacks, such as "a little weak" cell service (though compensated by strong park Wi-Fi) and the occasional "train that parks right behind the campground," the overall sentiment remains overwhelmingly positive. The fact that a guest would "definitely stay here again" despite these points underscores the park's core strengths and its value as a reliable and enjoyable RV stop in Pennsylvania. It offers a practical solution for a comfortable overnight or multi-day stay, proving that sometimes, the simple things done well make all the difference.

Location and Accessibility

1889 RV Park is strategically located at 180 Lake Rd, South Fork, PA 15956, USA. This places it directly within the borough of South Fork, in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. South Fork is a small community with a significant historical connection to the tragic Johnstown Flood of 1889, as it is situated very close to the site of the former South Fork Dam.

The park's accessibility for Pennsylvania residents is excellent due to its proximity to major transportation arteries. South Fork is located just off U.S. Route 219, a key north-south highway in Western Pennsylvania that connects to the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) and other major routes. This makes it an easy drive for RVers coming from Pittsburgh to the west, Altoona to the east, or other parts of Central and Western Pennsylvania. The "Easy in and easy out park" description further reinforces its convenient access for all sizes of RVs, minimizing stress upon arrival and departure.

A significant highlight of its location is its extremely close proximity to the Johnstown Flood National Memorial. Visitors can access the memorial's visitors center and exhibits easily from the RV Park, making it an ideal base for exploring this pivotal historical site. The area also offers natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor recreation in the surrounding Cambria County landscape. While the park itself is nestled in a more rural setting, essential services like gas stations and local conveniences are typically accessible within South Fork or the nearby larger city of Johnstown. For Pennsylvania travelers interested in both history and comfortable RV accommodation, 1889 RV Park's location offers an optimal balance.

Great small park that can accommodate all size units and the 1889 Park right there with pavilions and playgrounds. We had full hookup for $30.00 a night. Easy in and easy out park, Johnstown Flood NP visitors center and exhibits are really close. Jeff was awesome and gave us some history and some points we shouldn’t miss. Our cell service was a little weak (AT&T and Verizon) but the park WiFi was pretty strong. Dumpster is across the street. The only real down side was the train that parks right behind the campground. We would definitely stay here again.

Gravel parking area. Limited shade. RV area is part of a much larger park that has picnic areas and playgrounds. Toilet facilities about 110 yards away. No shower. Sewer, water, and electrical hookup at each site. Table at each site.

We loved this little park. Only 10 sites but Jeff made us feel real welcome. Sites have a picnic table and full hook ups. No other amenities though. Simple park to stay at. Situated in an adorable little town beautiful scenery. The leaves are just starting to turn. We’d come back in a heartbeat.

Been coming to this park for more than 20 years. Only 9 spots. Reasonable prices. There is a train track that runs within a 100 yards or so. Not a main line but there will be about 2-3 coal trains a week. Most people that use this campground have ties to the local area. Some come for the summer or months at a time. If you’re coming in through Sidman or St Michael on 869 with a tow vehicle I would recommend you disconnect your toad either at the high school or at the Catholic Church parking lot. The turn off 869 is an abrupt incline to a small bridge. You will bottom out your hitch and toad.
