Introduction / Overview

For horse owners and equestrian enthusiasts across Illinois, Equestrian Campground in Kankakee, IL, offers a unique and specialized camping experience. This isn't just any campground; it's explicitly designed as a "horse campground," catering to those who wish to combine their love for camping with their passion for horseback riding. Nestled within the natural beauty of the Kankakee area, it provides direct access to "beautiful trails," making it a premier destination for local riders.

Equestrian Campground is a primitive camping area, meaning it offers a more rustic experience compared to full-service campgrounds. This focus allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural surroundings while enjoying the company of their horses. While some aspects of its facilities, such as the well water pump and picnic tables, have received mixed feedback, the core appeal lies in its dedicated equestrian focus and the quality of its riding trails. For Illinois horse owners seeking a genuine outdoor adventure where their equine companions are not just tolerated but are the central focus, Equestrian Campground provides a tailored and memorable opportunity.

Location and Accessibility

Equestrian Campground is located in Kankakee, IL 60901, USA. Promotions or Special Offers

As a specialized and likely state or county-managed facility, Equestrian Campground in Kankakee does not typically offer commercial "promotions or special offers" in the way a private business might. Access to such campgrounds is generally governed by fixed daily or nightly fees for campsites, which are set by the managing authority (e.g., Illinois Department of Natural Resources if it's part of a state park, or a local park district).

However, the value proposition of Equestrian Campground lies in its unique offering: a dedicated space for horse camping and access to trails. For horse owners, the ability to camp with their horses directly and access extensive riding trails is often the primary draw and benefit.

To get the most accurate and up-to-date information on any associated fees, reservation policies, or specific guidelines, it is highly recommended that interested individuals contact the managing entity directly. This could be the Kankakee River State Park office or the Kankakee County Forest Preserve District, depending on which entity oversees this specific campground. Always inquire about any necessary permits or specific rules for equestrian campers.

Contact Information

Since Equestrian Campground is located in Kankakee, IL, and its nature suggests it is part of a larger park system, the most direct way to get information would likely be through the managing body of the public lands it resides within. This is often Kankakee River State Park.

While a direct phone number for "Equestrian Campground" isn't provided, the main contact for Kankakee River State Park, which often encompasses such facilities, is:

Kankakee River State Park Office Phone: (815) 933-1383

Kankakee River State Park Address: 5314 W Rt. 102, Bourbonnais, IL 60914 (This is the main park office, not the exact campground location, but the point of contact for park facilities.)

It is strongly recommended to call this number to confirm the exact location of Equestrian Campground within the park, inquire about reservations, fees, specific amenities (e.g., current status of water pump, tie-up spots), and any rules pertaining to horses and camping.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Illinois locals, especially those who own horses or are passionate about equestrian activities, Equestrian Campground in Kankakee offers a uniquely tailored and highly suitable outdoor experience. Its fundamental appeal lies in its specialized nature as a "horse campground," directly addressing a specific and often underserved niche within the camping community.

The core advantage for local horse owners is the unparalleled access to "beautiful trails" for riding. This means less time spent trailering to distant trailheads and more time enjoying their passion directly from their campsite. The ability to camp with their horses, a feature not commonly found at all campgrounds, makes this an ideal destination for weekend trips or longer equestrian adventures within Illinois. The community of like-minded horse owners that congregates here also fosters a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere, where experiences and tips can be shared.

While the campground offers a more primitive camping experience with "no water... no electric" at individual sites, and facilities like the well water pump and picnic tables have received mixed reviews, this rustic approach can be a significant draw for those seeking a genuine immersion in nature. Clean pit toilets are a fundamental convenience that is appreciated in such settings. It caters to a specific desire for less developed camping, where the focus is truly on the natural environment and the equestrian activity itself.

The feedback, while highlighting some practical concerns, ultimately reinforces the campground's primary purpose and success: "Great place to ride." This simple yet powerful endorsement from a user who values the riding experience is key. For Illinois horse owners who are looking for a dedicated space where they can bring their horses, camp, and explore extensive trails, Equestrian Campground in Kankakee is precisely what they need. It eliminates the logistical challenges often associated with transporting horses for recreational riding, providing a convenient and focused destination right in their home state. It's a testament to providing exactly what a specific local demographic is seeking for their outdoor and equestrian pursuits.

When it takes 40 pumps to start the non potable well water pump... it's a concern.. Pit toilets are clean. Plenty of spaces to camp... this a horse campground... not just a campground.. don't go there without a horse. Don't upset the horse owners who go there to ride their horses. No water... no electric... I was invited as a guest and their was three horses... out of 8 spaces, only 3 has places to tie your horses. All of the picnic tables are damaged in some way... and graffiti behind the pit toilet..
