For those of us in Michigan who yearn for a true escape from the daily grind, where the sounds of nature replace the hum of technology, Culhane Lake State Forest Campground offers an unparalleled retreat. Nestled deep within the vast wilderness of the Upper Peninsula near Newberry, this isn't your average campground; it's a "remote and beautiful" sanctuary designed for those who truly appreciate rustic charm and unadulterated natural beauty. As one satisfied camper eloquently put it, "We loved no cell service, great fishing, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, no artificial lights or noises. The night sky was amazing. Great place to get away from it all." This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of what makes Culhane Lake so special for Michiganders seeking a genuine wilderness experience.
This hidden gem might require a bit of a drive on "washboard dirt roads," but the reward is immense. With "sites had plenty of room" and "Many with lake access," you're guaranteed a picturesque setting for your camp. The commitment to maintaining clean "vault toilets but kept stocked and clean" ensures that even in a rustic environment, essential comforts are provided. Culhane Lake State Forest Campground is not for those seeking luxury, but rather for those who crave the quiet, the starry nights, and the abundant outdoor activities that Michigan's state forest campgrounds do so well. It's the perfect destination to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the wild heart of the U.P.
Culhane Lake State Forest Campground, located in Luce County, approximately 29 miles northeast of Newberry, Michigan, is a quintessential rustic camping destination in the Upper Peninsula. Managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as part of the state forest campground system, it offers a serene and secluded experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Situated directly on the shore of the 97-acre Culhane Lake, the campground provides ample opportunities for water-based activities and enjoys stunning natural vistas.
This campground is specifically designed for those who appreciate a more traditional and self-sufficient camping style. It features rustic sites without electricity or modern plumbing at each site, offering a true "get away from it all" atmosphere. Despite its remote nature, the campground maintains clean vault toilets and provides access to a hand-pump water well, ensuring essential comforts. Reviewers consistently highlight the peace and quiet, the spacious sites (many with direct lake access), and the incredible dark skies perfect for stargazing. While it's not suited for large, fancy RVs or those desiring a luxury experience, it's highly recommended for tent campers, smaller RVs, and anyone looking to immerse themselves in fishing, paddling, hiking, and enjoying the undisturbed beauty of a Michigan wilderness. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis, adding to its adventurous appeal.
Culhane Lake State Forest Campground is situated on Culhane Lake, near Newberry, MI, with its address listed as Culhane Lake, Newberry, MI 49868, USA. More specifically, it is located in Luce County, approximately 29 miles northeast of Newberry. This positioning emphasizes its remote and secluded nature, a key part of its appeal for those seeking to truly disconnect.
Accessing the campground requires navigating "11 miles off the paved road" on "washboard dirt roads." Reviewers consistently advise visitors to "Go slow and take your time" on these unpaved routes. While larger, "fancy RVs" might find the journey challenging, the campground is accessible for many RVs and trailers, though it's recommended to have a vehicle suited for dirt roads and to be prepared for a potentially messy camper if it has rained. The Michigan DNR notes that ORVs are allowed in the campground "to enter and exit only," with a county road parallel to the campground providing access to ORV routes in northern Luce County.
Despite the unpaved approach, the journey is rewarded by the campground's picturesque setting. Many sites offer direct "lake access," providing stunning "sunsets coming up over the lake." This immediate connection to Culhane Lake offers excellent opportunities for paddling and fishing right from your campsite. The remote nature also means "no cell service," which, for many campers, is a highly desirable feature for truly getting away from it all. While it requires a deliberate drive, the destination offers an unparalleled sense of tranquility and natural beauty, making the journey worthwhile for those seeking a genuine Upper Peninsula wilderness experience.
Culhane Lake State Forest Campground, adhering to the rustic standards of Michigan's State Forest Campgrounds, provides essential services focused on functionality and maintaining a natural experience, rather than extensive modern amenities.
Culhane Lake State Forest Campground boasts several unique features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for campers seeking a genuine rustic Upper Peninsula experience:
As Culhane Lake State Forest Campground is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), it does not typically offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the way a private business would. Its fee structure is set by the state for all State Forest Campgrounds.
However, for Michigan residents, the most significant "promotion" or cost-saving measure for accessing state forest campgrounds, as well as state parks and recreation areas, is the Michigan Recreation Passport. This affordable annual pass, which can be purchased when renewing your license plate, grants vehicle access to all Michigan state parks, recreation areas, and state forest campgrounds for an entire year. For anyone planning multiple outdoor excursions within Michigan, the Recreation Passport provides excellent value and effectively covers the entry fee for destinations like Culhane Lake State Forest Campground.
Camping fees at State Forest Campgrounds are generally lower than those at State Parks with more extensive amenities, reflecting their rustic nature. The current nightly rate for Culhane Lake is listed as $20. While specific discounts on the nightly rate are not common for general public, certain groups (e.g., seniors or individuals with disabilities) may be eligible for reduced fees through specific state programs or passes. It is always recommended to check the official Michigan DNR website (Michigan.gov/DNR) for the most up-to-date information on fees, policies, and any potential program benefits.
It's important to remember that since this campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with "No reservations," there aren't booking-related promotions. Visitors simply pay upon arrival at the self-registration station.
For inquiries or to learn more about Culhane Lake State Forest Campground, it's important to note that direct reservations are not taken for this specific campground due to its first-come, first-served policy. However, general information about Michigan State Forest Campgrounds and policies can be obtained through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) system.

Nice and quiet, the sites had plenty of room. Many with lake access. Great sunsets coming up over the lake. Vault toilets but kept stocked and clean.
Sep 18, 2024 · Bob Johnson11 miles off the paved road, washboard dirt roads. Go slow and take your time. No electricity or dump stations, one water pump. Remote and beautiful. Not for a fancy RV, or if you want a luxury campground. We loved no cell service, great fishing, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, no artificial lights or noises. The night sky was amazing. Great place to get away from it all. No reservations, and only maybe 15 sites, but if you can nab one, it’s worth the drive.
Jul 28, 2021 · Kendrick MulletI want to keep this place a secret, but it's really beautiful. We stayed 2 nights. It's self registration- first come, first serve - $15/night (cash). There were about 12-14 sites total - all on the lake. There is a very nice boat ramp just past the campground turn-in. Absolutely beautiful...easy access to Crisp Point (which is a must-see). The camp host provided maps and local brochures which proved extra helpful with no cell service. Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table. There are 2 pit toilets (which are very clean), and a fresh water well pump. No electricity. We will absolutely be back.
Aug 14, 2019 · Hayley EmmonsThe best camping experience of my life. I've been to many state campgrounds and this is the cleanest, peaceful most relaxing place in Michigan! Waking up and watching the sun rise on the lake was priceless!!! Campground host was awesome! We will go back!! ♥️♥️
Sep 01, 2018 · Cherish BeaubienGreat place to set up shop for the night. I always like camping in pines and near water, so it was perfect for me. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because the sites are pretty close together, but it was overall a nice quiet night. $15 a night, first come first serve, no reservations. Just the way I like it.
