For Illinois outdoor enthusiasts, there’s nothing quite like a getaway to the iconic Starved Rock area, known for its breathtaking canyons, waterfalls, and the majestic Illinois River. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in this natural beauty and add a unique aquatic adventure to your camping trip, KAYAK STARVED ROCK CAMPGROUND in Ottawa offers a distinct experience. This isn't your typical sprawling state park campground; it's a specialized destination that combines rustic riverside camping with a strong emphasis on kayaking and exploring the stunning waterways. Designed for those who appreciate direct access to the Illinois River and the unique perspective it offers of the towering bluffs, this campground caters to a specific kind of outdoor enthusiast. While it offers a more intimate and less conventional camping setup, its prime location and focus on guided kayak tours make it a noteworthy option for Illinois locals eager to discover the Starved Rock region from a different vantage point.
KAYAK STARVED ROCK CAMPGROUND is a unique camping destination situated at 1170 N 27th Rd, Ottawa, IL 61350, USA. What sets this campground apart is its direct riverside location on the Illinois River, directly across from the world-famous Starved Rock State Park. It's designed for those who prioritize water activities, offering high-end kayak rentals and guided kayak tours that provide an unparalleled view of the towering St. Peter's Sandstone bluffs, soaring bald eagles, and even pelicans. The camping experience here is described as "primitive" and "rustic riverside camping," catering to tents, pop-up campers, and camper vans. While it may not feature extensive amenities like flush toilets or showers directly on site, it focuses on providing a genuine outdoor experience with essential comforts. The campground also offers a variety of site types to accommodate different preferences. It aims to be a perfect blend of nature, water activities, and a more focused camping environment, making it an excellent choice for Illinoisans looking for an active and scenic getaway centered around the river and the iconic state park.
KAYAK STARVED ROCK CAMPGROUND is strategically located at 1170 N 27th Rd, Ottawa, IL 61350, USA, putting it right on the banks of the Illinois River. This location is incredibly advantageous for Illinois residents, as it's directly across from Starved Rock State Park, one of the most popular natural attractions in the state. For those coming from the greater Chicago metropolitan area, the campground is often cited as being "less than 1 hour from Chicago," making it a highly accessible destination for a weekend trip or even a day excursion. The proximity to Ottawa, a charming city, means that essential services, supplies, and dining options are just a short drive away. While the campground offers a feeling of being immersed in nature, you're never too far from civilization. Visitors should note that navigating to the site is generally straightforward, but it's always wise to confirm directions. The campground’s setting directly on the river provides easy access for launching kayaks and experiencing the unique ecosystem of the Illinois River, which is a major draw for local paddlers and nature enthusiasts.
As a specialized campground focused on kayaking, KAYAK STARVED ROCK CAMPGROUND's "promotions" often revolve around their core offerings. While specific discounts aren't widely advertised, Illinois locals interested in visiting should be aware of a few potential opportunities and pricing structures. For instance, group rates for guided kayak tours are available, with per-person prices decreasing significantly for larger groups (e.g., 4-6 people vs. 30-74 people). There are also different pricing tiers for single versus tandem kayak rentals and tours. For camping itself, daily site rates are applied. The campground does not offer free camping on holidays, indicating consistent pricing during peak times. It's always recommended to visit their official website or contact them directly to inquire about any current bundles that might combine camping with kayak rentals or tours. They also offer optional tent rentals and sleeping cushion rentals, which can be seen as a convenience for those who might not own full camping gear. For those bringing their own kayak, a $10 launch fee applies. Booking in advance, especially for guided tours, is highly recommended due to space limitations. While traditional "discount codes" may not be prevalent, understanding their group rates and direct rental options is the best way for Illinois residents to plan their visit and potentially manage costs.
For Illinois locals, KAYAK STARVED ROCK CAMPGROUND offers a unique and suitable outdoor experience, especially for those with a passion for kayaking and a desire to explore one of our state's most iconic natural landmarks. Its undeniable appeal lies in its direct proximity to Starved Rock State Park and its prime riverside location on the Illinois River. This setup provides unparalleled opportunities for kayaking through stunning scenery, viewing bluffs and wildlife from the water, and embarking on guided tours with knowledgeable local experts. For adventurers who want to experience Starved Rock in a way that goes beyond just hiking, this campground is a perfect fit. While the camping itself is rustic and the sites are close together, this can appeal to those who value convenience and immediate access to the river over extensive privacy. The presence of clean, well-maintained portable toilets, pet-friendly policies, and readily available kayak rentals (including options for bringing your own) adds to its practicality for local campers. The staff are also noted for being helpful and friendly. However, it's crucial for Illinoisans to go in with clear expectations: this is not a sprawling, amenity-rich campground with vast private sites. It's a focused operation primarily designed for kayaking and access to the river. The strict "no music" rule and the density of sites mean it caters more to those seeking a quieter, river-centric experience rather than a lively social camping scene. If you're an Illinois resident whose ideal outdoor adventure includes paddling on the Illinois River, exploring Starved Rock, and embracing a more basic camping setup, then KAYAK STARVED ROCK CAMPGROUND provides a distinctive and memorable opportunity right in your backyard, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved state treasure.

We booked here very last minute since most sites for memorial day were booked already. Once we arrived, we quickly realized why this site was still available. All of the sites are very very close together, in all my years of camping I have never seen anything like it. You can look a few feet over and directly see/hear everything the campsite next to you is doing, there is maybe 10 ft in between each site and absolutely no privacy at all. We also did not see any “no music at all through any speakers at any time of day” announcement until immediately after paying for the reservation (i accept that this could be my fault for overlooking it on the website) but i just think that is a very silly rule. Of course, staying quiet during quiet hours makes complete sense, but I have again never ever been to a campsite that does not allow music during the day at all. The site itself it’s just very bumpy, I would think they could at least flatten the ground a bit so you can put down a tent on even ground. Overall, I would have been fine if we payed $10 for this campsite a night, but charging $30 is unreasonable. The staff were helpful and nice. The kayaks were nice, but they are very expensive. If they spaced out the sites a bit, allowed music during the daylight hours and charged a bit less money for the site, I would definitely return. However, unfortunately overall we were disappointed with the site.

Jun 01, 2025 · MukeshAbsolutely an amazing experience! The campground is well maintained, the staff is very accommodating and friendly, the kayaking is really fun and interesting, and the views are outstanding. It’s a 10 minute drive to Starved Rock State Park, and there are food options within 10 minutes if you don’t want to cook. The bathrooms are porta potties but they are easily the cleanest and nicest I’ve ever been in. We had a good sized group here and everyone loved it. If you have any issue or question, text them and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you get a response. Highly recommended!
Sep 22, 2024 · Al YoshimuraGreat fun and memorable experience. We did not book ahead of time as we planned it on the spot. After reaching the site we paid and filled the waiver online as suggested by the staff. As we did not book ahead of the time we weren't going to be on the guided tour. But fortunately our guides Ritchie and Jeremy were very accommodating as they included us in the tour as well. The most memorable experience was that it started to rain after half a point but we still made it back. Along with other scenic spots we also saw an aquatic snake sun bathing on one of the logs in the water. Very memorable experience!!!
