This article will provide a clear, factual, and engaging overview of Appletree Group Campground, drawing on available public information and genuine customer reviews to highlight why this secluded gem is a perfect choice for locals across North Carolina looking for their next group outdoor adventure.
Appletree Group Campground is located in Topton, NC 28781, USA, within the Nantahala National Forest. Topton is a small, unincorporated community in Macon County, situated in the mountainous southwestern corner of North Carolina. This region is a prime destination for outdoor recreation, characterized by its rugged terrain, dense forests, and numerous rivers and lakes, including the nearby Nantahala River and Nantahala Lake.
While the address is listed simply as "Topton," official information from the National Forests in North Carolina provides more precise directions, emphasizing its secluded nature. Access to the campground involves a drive down what has been described as a "5-mile dirt road," a feature that actually enhances its appeal for those seeking true seclusion. This journey contributes to the feeling of genuinely "getting away from it all." Despite this rustic approach, the campground is accessible to various types of vehicles, with specific guidance for RVs.
Its location, though somewhat remote, is strategically placed within reach of several key attractions. It's approximately 10 minutes from Nantahala Lake, offering opportunities for boating and fishing. The renowned Nantahala River, famous for whitewater rafting and kayaking, is also very close, providing thrilling adventure options. Furthermore, the campground offers direct access to over 20 miles of interconnecting hiking trails, including a section of the long-distance Bartram National Recreation Trail. Nearby towns like Franklin and Andrews (both roughly 20-30 minutes away) provide essential services, groceries, and dining options. This balance of secluded wilderness and reasonable access to amenities and attractions makes Appletree Group Campground an excellent choice for North Carolinians seeking a deep dive into mountain recreation.

- Individual Site Amenities: Each of the six sites is well-appointed with its own picnic shelter, an outdoor group gathering area, a large fire ring (praised for being "huge... large enough to burn large fires!"), and lantern posts. These provisions ensure ample space and facilities for group activities.
- Restrooms and Water: The campground offers restrooms with flush toilets and a shower house. Each site also has a water hydrant for potable drinking water, providing essential conveniences that enhance the camping experience.
- Designated Parking: Each group site includes a designated gravel parking area, accommodating vehicles and allowing for one wheeled camping unit (e.g., an RV or pop-up camper) per site, which must remain in the gravel area.
- Grassy Areas for Tents and Activities: Reviews highlight "large grassy areas with good shade" and "a large field next to the camping area that could be used for various activities," indicating ample space for pitching tents and engaging in group recreation.
- Secure Access: Access to the campground is through a combination lock on the gate, ensuring that only registered occupants have entry, which contributes to a secluded and secure environment.
- Information on Local Recreation: While not a direct service on-site, the managing forest service provides extensive information on nearby activities, including hiking trails (over 20 miles of interconnecting loops, Bartram Trail access), fishing in nearby trout streams (rainbow, brown, native brook trout), and whitewater rafting/kayaking on the Nantahala River. Nantahala Lake is also only 10 minutes away.
These services collectively ensure that Appletree Group Campground is well-equipped to handle the needs of large groups seeking an immersive, yet comfortable, outdoor adventure.

The "5-mile drive down the dirt road to get here" enhances this sense of getting away from it all, offering a peaceful environment free from excessive traffic or noise. This contributes to a truly immersive nature experience.
- Spacious Sites with Ample Grassy Areas: Reviewers highlight "large grassy areas with good shade" and "plenty of space to spread out." This ample room allows for various group activities, games, and comfortable tent pitching, giving each group a sense of their own private retreat.

As a facility operated by the U.S. Forest Service (Nantahala National Forest), Appletree Group Campground typically operates under a standard fee structure rather than offering commercial promotions or special deals. Its pricing is based on the size of the group and the specific site booked.
However, the "special offer" of Appletree Group Campground lies in its unique value proposition as a dedicated group camping facility within a national forest.
- Affordable Group Rates: The fees are set at $75/night for 25-person sites and $150/night for 50-person sites. When divided among a large group, this represents a very cost-effective way to secure a private, well-equipped large camping area in a prime natural setting, especially compared to booking multiple individual sites at commercial campgrounds.
- Exclusive Use: The "combination lock on the gate" ensures that only registered occupants have access, guaranteeing privacy and exclusive use of the reserved group site, which is a significant "offer" for groups seeking undisturbed togetherness.
- Access to National Forest Amenities: While not a direct promotion, booking at a national forest campground grants access to the vast recreational opportunities of the surrounding forest, including extensive hiking trails, fishing, and proximity to whitewater activities, often without additional entry fees.
Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Nantahala District Office. It is advisable to book well in advance, especially for popular summer weekends, as the campground usage is described as "heavy." Customer Reviews
One of the nicer campgrounds that features about 6 sites. Large grassy areas with good shade. Huge fire pits large enough to burn large fires!
Great campsite that is very secluded. I actually enjoyed the 5 mile drive down the dirt road to get here.
I loved playing here as a child growing up in the area
We reserved campsite D which is a 20 person site (pretty sure). There are a few decent spots for hammocks. There are a few decent spots for tents 1-6 people. Anything bigger and you might not find a decent spot, but could still set up. The grassy area is terraced to accommodate a lot of tents, but nature has taken a toll on it. One of the bathrooms wasn't flushing great, but we notified the maintenance guy and he was going to notify the forest service. The pavilion was awesome. The area is close to the river so great for white noise sleepers. Zero cell phone reception.
It had beautiful views and it was very well kept, it was also very open areas for large gatherings.
