If you’re a local Kansan organizing an event that requires a well-equipped, safe, and engaging outdoor setting, this article will provide you with a comprehensive overview of why Big Bull Creek Youth Campground is highly recommended by those who’ve experienced its charm.
Big Bull Creek Youth Campground is not your typical individual campsite; it’s specifically designed and optimized for group camping experiences. Managed by Johnson County Park and Recreation District (JCPRD), it stands out for its thoughtful layout and excellent facilities, making it particularly appealing for organizations like Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, school groups, and large family reunions. Despite its close proximity to urban areas, the campground successfully maintains a remote, natural feel, allowing groups to truly immerse themselves in the outdoors. Reviewers consistently praise its cleanliness, the quality of its amenities, and its suitability for less experienced campers, providing a comfortable entry point into the world of outdoor adventure. The focus on providing a structured yet flexible environment ensures that groups can enjoy both organized activities and free exploration within a secure setting. This blend of accessibility, functionality, and natural beauty makes Big Bull Creek Youth Campground a premier destination for group outings in Kansas.
Big Bull Creek Youth Campground is conveniently located at 33532, 34298 W 213th St, Edgerton, KS 66021, USA. Its position within the larger Big Bull Creek Park system in Johnson County offers superb accessibility for groups coming from various parts of Kansas and even neighboring states. Situated relatively close to major thoroughfares like I-35, it provides easy on-and-off access, simplifying travel for multiple vehicles. This proximity to major highways, while occasionally leading to some ambient highway noise on very quiet nights, is a small trade-off for the convenience it offers. For instance, it's just a short drive from Overland Park, Olathe, and other Kansas City metro areas, making it an ideal destination for local organizations seeking a quick escape to nature without extensive travel. The location allows groups to feel like they’ve ventured far into the wilderness, even though urban amenities and emergency services are comfortably within reach. This balance of a remote feel with practical accessibility is a key factor in its appeal.
Big Bull Creek Youth Campground offers a robust set of services and facilities specifically tailored to meet the needs of group campers, ensuring comfort, safety, and convenience during their stay.
Big Bull Creek Youth Campground offers a variety of features and highlights that enhance the group camping experience, providing both recreational opportunities and practical conveniences:
As a public facility managed by Johnson County Park and Recreation District (JCPRD), Big Bull Creek Youth Campground typically operates on a reservation system with set fees rather than offering frequent, dynamic promotions like private businesses. However, its value lies in its very affordable rates for the extensive amenities and dedicated group facilities it provides.
To inquire about current rates, reservation policies, and any potential group discounts or seasonal offerings, it is always best to directly contact JCPRD or visit their official website. Group camping sites are often booked well in advance, especially for popular seasons like spring and fall, so early planning is highly recommended. While explicit "promotions" may not be a constant feature, the inherent cost-effectiveness of hosting a large group event in such a well-equipped and maintained public facility often serves as its own form of value. Consider reaching out for specifics on availability and any special considerations for educational or non-profit youth groups.

Excellent campground for groups, especially Cub Scouts or other groups with less experienced campers. It has a remote feel, though close to the city. Excellent amenities including clean and heated restrooms with flush toilets, large fire ring, large open field, flag pole, large shelter with ample electrical receptacles, and good trails. A newly installed hammock structure is really exciting. It can fit a dozen hammocks! The only downside is the highway noise due to close proximity to I-35, especially noticeable on quiet nights.
Oct 07, 2023 · Matt KolinsGreat spot for cub scouts camping as a Pack. Fields and camping sites are flat in a grassy (cut short) area. Nice bathrooms and a shelter with lights and plenty of electricity access. There is a flag pole and a big fire ring. Other smaller fire rings around the campsites too. Pod 1 and 3 a little more isolated (more privacy) Pod2 nearest from bathroom and shelter. Nice hiking trails (1.25 miles loop that connect with other longer trails) for older kids, also nice mountain biking trails. We can hear highway and trains a little at night but not really bothersome. Lots of wild life (bobcats, deers, turkeys,.. ). Definitely would, recommend that spot for a pack family camping event or troop event. The parking is on the small side though and you will need a wagon to carry your stuff to the camping pods.
Apr 19, 2021 · Sebastien PichoffWe stayed at the youth campground area off of 213st. There was power at the very nice pavilion, two bathrooms were available (sink, toilet, and baby changing station), and the space was large enough to occomodate plenty of tents and there was still room for kids to play. Access to trails directly from camp was a nice bonus.
Oct 06, 2024 · brian haynesGreat site for group camping. 3 "pods" with fire rings and height adjustable fire grates for grilling. The pods provide flexibility so the grounds can accommodate very large groups or multiple smaller groups. Cost per pod por night is very within reason. The shelter has handicapped accessible picnic tables, tons of power outlets, and very bright lights. The restrooms are clean, have flushing toilets and running water. Flag pole for scout groups, and a huge fire ring. The open green space allows for all sorts of activities. Trails connect the camp grounds to the park, but it's a few miles to get from one to the other.
Dec 04, 2022 · Brian Barth(Pod #1) Very nice campground. A nice pavilion w/ a dozen or so picnic tables, a pair of restrooms (well maintained, BTW) and a big field to accommodate a group of campers with nearby parking. Field is surrounded by wooded area. Saw skunks, raccoons and deer while were there. Also has easy access with lots of available hiking trails. Parking might get tight if all pods are being used, however.
