Hillsdale State Park Equestrian Camp, specifically the Saddle Ridge Equestrian Campground, is nestled within the larger Hillsdale State Park. Its official address is listed as Paola, KS 66071, USA. This places the campground strategically in Miami County, just west of the bustling Kansas City metropolitan area. This location is a significant advantage for Kansas residents, particularly those in the eastern part of the state, as it offers convenient access without requiring extensive travel.
One of the most frequently praised aspects of Hillsdale State Park Equestrian Camp's location is its accessibility. It is situated with direct access off major highways, making it an excellent "layover when traveling through Kansas" for those hauling horses. This ease of access minimizes the stress of navigating unfamiliar rural roads with a horse trailer, allowing campers to quickly and safely reach their destination. For local Kansas equestrians, this means less time on the road and more time enjoying the trails.
While the broader Hillsdale State Park offers various recreational opportunities, the Equestrian Camp is a dedicated area, ensuring that its facilities and atmosphere are tailored to the unique needs of horse campers. The surrounding Hillsdale Lake and its expansive natural areas provide a beautiful backdrop and ample opportunities for outdoor activities beyond just riding, though horse riding is undoubtedly the main draw. Its proximity to Paola also means that essential services, such as fuel, feed stores, and veterinary services, are within a reasonable distance, adding another layer of convenience for visitors.
Hillsdale State Park Equestrian Camp is thoughtfully equipped to cater specifically to the needs of horse campers, offering a range of essential services that ensure a comfortable and convenient stay for both riders and their equine companions. These services are key to its reputation as a premier horse camping destination in Kansas.
- Equestrian-Only Camping: A primary service, Saddle Ridge is designated exclusively for equestrian camping. This ensures that the facilities and environment are tailored to horse owners, minimizing conflicts with other types of campers and providing a focused experience.
- Electric & Water Hookups: Campsites are equipped with electric and water hookups, providing modern conveniences for RVs and trailers. This is crucial for comfort, especially during varying weather conditions, and allows for the use of appliances and fresh water supply.
- Horse Pens/Corrals: A vital amenity for horse campers, individual sites are provided with horse pens or corrals. This allows for the safe and secure containment of horses directly at the campsite, eliminating the need for portable fencing and ensuring the well-being of the animals overnight.
- Well-Maintained Campsites: Reviews consistently highlight that campsites are "very well kept," indicating a commitment to cleanliness and order by the park management.
- Clean Bathroom and Showers: The availability of "very clean" bathroom and shower facilities is a significant convenience for campers, providing comfort after a day on the trails.
- Extensive Horse Trails: While technically a "feature," the maintenance and accessibility of the "awesome" horse trails can be considered a service provided by the park, offering miles of dedicated riding opportunities directly from the campground.
- Accessibility: The camp offers access off major highways, which, while a location feature, also serves as a critical service by making the park easy to reach for travelers with horse trailers.

As a state park campground managed by the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks (KDWP), Hillsdale State Park Equestrian Camp typically operates under a structured fee system rather than offering frequent, time-limited "promotions" in the commercial sense. However, the value provided through its specialized facilities and natural environment can be considered a consistent "offer" for the equestrian community.
Prospective campers should refer to the official Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks website (ksoutdoors.com) for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding fees and any potential discounts. Generally, state parks offer:
- Vehicle Permits: A state park vehicle permit is typically required for entry into Hillsdale State Park, which can be purchased daily, seasonally, or annually.
- Camping Permits/Fees: Nightly camping permits are required for overnight stays. There may be specific fees for sites with utility hookups (electric and water) at Saddle Ridge.
- Reservations: Campsites at Saddle Ridge are reservable, allowing campers to secure their spot in advance, which is a valuable feature, especially during peak seasons. Reservations can often be made through platforms like ReserveAmerica, linked via the KDWP website.
- Annual Passes: For frequent visitors, annual camping passes or state park passports might offer cost savings over multiple visits.
While explicit promotional discounts like "buy one night, get one free" are uncommon for state parks, the consistent provision of well-maintained, specialized facilities at a reasonable state park rate represents a significant ongoing value for Kansas equestrians. Customer Reviews
This is a great Kansas State Park to ride, and horse camp located with access off major highways. Great layover when traveling through Kansas. Equestrian camping only at Saddle Ridge Equestrian Campground. Lots of timber riding. Shaded sites with pens, electric & water hook ups. Refer to the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks website, search Hillsdale, for more info.
Campsite was very well kept and the bathroom and showers were very clean. Horse trails were awesome. Horse pens, water and electric hookups were perfect. Great place for horse camping!!
Beautiful state park and such a nice equestrian campground. The trails were amazing. We'll definitely be back.
My family loves going out on the their trails, which are all volunteer maintained. They have miles and miles of trails going around the lake, plus plenty of hitching posts, corrals, and rv hookups complete with fire pits if you want to extend your stay and make it a camping trip instead of a day trip. They also have a nice mounting block if your horse is tall!
I camp at saddle ridge at least twice a year! Nice trails! Convenient steps, clean bathrooms. I do wish all of the horse camping spots had pens though!
