For New Jersey residents looking to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the state’s natural heritage, the Brendan T Byrne State Forest Campground is an unparalleled choice. Located deep within the storied Pine Barrens, this state forest offers a quintessential rustic camping experience that emphasizes natural beauty and outdoor activity over resort-style amenities. It's a vast, protected landscape that invites exploration, tranquility, and a refreshing break from the hustle of everyday life in the Garden State.
Formerly known as Lebanon State Forest, the Brendan T. Byrne State Forest is the second largest state forest in New Jersey, spanning over 38,000 acres across Burlington and Ocean Counties. Its campground is celebrated by local enthusiasts for its large, well-spaced sites that offer a welcome sense of privacy, a feature often highly valued by campers. Visitors often praise the peaceful atmosphere, especially at night, which provides a genuine opportunity to enjoy the quiet solitude of the pines.
Beyond traditional camping, the forest offers a variety of overnight options, including rustic cabins and shelters, catering to different comfort levels. The campsites themselves are simple yet effective—each comes equipped with a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern hook. While it maintains a clean, simple environment, the facilities, including bathrooms and showers, are noted by many users as being well-maintained and functional, a pleasant surprise for a State Forest setting. For those who believe the best camping involves miles of trails, the fresh scent of pine, and a quiet campfire, Brendan T. Byrne is the definitive Pine Barrens destination.

The good: large sites, well spaced out except for some buddy tent sites, mostly quiet at night, they have a dump station. The bad: $25 a night (non-resident) plus $5 reservation fee is high considering no hook ups and almost no ranger presence. Also they lock the dump station, so you better have the code if you need to drop tanks on the way in. The ugly: Very little signage from main roads and Google will probably try to get you to take some narrow dirt side road instead of the main road.
Sep 19, 2024 · Chris BloomfieldThe Pine Barrens are an amazing place to camp. The campsites here are wonderful (they also have cabins (running water) and shelters (no running water) for rent) and I highly recommend it. A playgound for the kiddos, but the bathrooms are a little old but work fine. And as always, keep your campsite noise level low out of respect for others.
Aug 27, 2024 · E NNice little area not too far from Mount Holly, JBMDL, and numerous other small cities/towns. Shelter's are nice and rustic. No electricity (shelters). Bathroom/Showers are clean and maintained well. Huge amount of trails in the area.
May 02, 2022 · Jason ObertThe park maintenance personnel were quite annoying and constantly driving by asking us to move our vehicles due to safety concerns. Also the bathroom ran out of paper towels and No hot water. Never had so many rules and regulations before now.
Jun 17, 2025 · Eric SpinnerEverything is neat and clean. Everyone is respectful of space, noise, and cleanliness. Great area for peace abd transquility. The bathroom are clean as well.
