Bright Star Campground at Cooper Lake State Park (South Sulphur Unit) is packed with features and highlights that make it a favorite among Texans looking for a quality outdoor experience:
Exceptional Cleanliness and Maintenance: Repeatedly praised by visitors, the campground is noted for being "Very nice!!!" with "level and clean" sites and "cleanly" stocked bathrooms. This commitment to upkeep significantly enhances the overall comfort and enjoyment for campers.
Direct Lakeside Access: Many sites, particularly those in premium locations, offer direct, easy walking access to the water. The presence of "sandy beaches" and clear water makes swimming a highly enjoyable activity right from your camp, providing an immersive lake experience.
Abundant Wildlife Viewing: Campers consistently rave about the diverse wildlife. Encounters with "Armadillos, rascal raccoons (trash pandas lol) bunnies, butterflies!!!" and especially "DEER EVERYWHERE!!!!" create a magical and memorable experience, fostering a deep connection with nature.
Thoughtfully Equipped Campsites: Every RV space comes complete with a picnic table, grill area, gravel pad, and water/electric hookups. The added bonus of some picnic tables having a "Pavillion cover" provides extra comfort and shade, a thoughtful amenity for Texas weather.
Versatile Recreational Opportunities: Beyond camping, the park offers a wide array of activities including excellent fishing (especially for white and hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie), boating, paddling (with rentals available), swimming, and extensive hiking/biking trails. This variety ensures there's something for every interest and energy level.
State Park Quality and Resources: As part of a Texas State Park, visitors benefit from the resources of Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, which includes well-maintained infrastructure, designated recreational areas, and often educational programs or ranger-led activities.
Level Sites for Easy Setup: Campers appreciate the consistently "level" sites, which makes setting up RVs or tents much easier and more comfortable, reducing stress upon arrival.
As a campground within Cooper Lake State Park, Bright Star Campground operates under the pricing and promotional structures set by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. While specific, limited-time "promotions" akin to commercial businesses are not typically offered, there are established pricing tiers and potential discounts that benefit visitors:
Daily Entrance Fee: All visitors to Cooper Lake State Park (including campers) are subject to a daily entrance fee, which is $5 per person per day for ages 13 and older. This fee provides access to all park amenities and is separate from camping fees.
Campsite Fees: Campsite rates for RV sites with water and electricity (like those at Bright Star Campground) are typically around $38 per night for two people. Additional adults and children incur extra fees.
Texas State Parks Pass: This is the most significant "special offer" for frequent Texas State Park visitors. For an annual fee, a Texas State Parks Pass grants the pass holder and up to 14 guests free entry to all Texas State Parks for a year. It also provides discounts on camping fees (typically 50% off the second night when booking two or more consecutive nights) and certain merchandise. For Texans who visit state parks multiple times a year, this pass offers substantial savings.
Senior and Access Pass Discounts: Texas residents who are 65 years or older may qualify for discounted annual passes or waivers of the daily entrance fee. Similarly, individuals with a disability and receiving Social Security or other federal disability payments may be eligible for a Texas State Parklands Pass (or Access Pass) that waives entrance fees and provides camping discounts.
Off-Peak Season Camping: While not an advertised promotion, camping during the off-peak seasons (typically fall, winter, and early spring outside of major holidays) often means fewer crowds, more available sites, and a more peaceful experience, effectively offering a "better deal" on the enjoyment factor.
Free Fishing from Shore: A great benefit for all Texans is that a fishing license is not required to fish from the shore within a Texas State Park, including Cooper Lake. This allows anyone to enjoy fishing without the additional cost of a license.
For the most current and accurate pricing, including any specific deals for group camping or special events, it is always best to check the official Texas Parks & Wildlife Department website or contact Cooper Lake State Park directly.

Very nice!!! All Rv spaces have a picnic table, grill area, gravel, water/electric, and easy access paths to walk to the water. Armadillos, rascal raccoons (trash pandas lol) bunnies, butterflies!!! Extra parking by camps. Some picnic tables have a Pavillion cover. Beaches are sandy and the water was great to swim in. There are designated areas for swimming, but we just went behind our camp. Aug 07, 2022 · S.L. FaulknerGreat state park sites! The site we stayed on was level and clean. We've been here several times now and have always had good luck with level sites. We didn't get to do the trails this time because we were too far from them and didn't bring a car or bikes. However, in the past we've enjoyed our walks on them.
Apr 11, 2022 · Matthew WhalinA great camping loop with easy access to trails, water and bathhouse. The campsites are large, well organized and appointed with everything you could need for a fun camping trip.
Apr 09, 2023 · Phil SidariThe one downfall of the camping area is it there is no sewer only a dump station. It was a very nice campground.
