Location and Accessibility

Camp Buckwood is located at 8670 Spearsville Rd, Morgantown, IN 46160, USA. This address places the campground in the scenic Brown County area of Indiana, known for its rolling hills, abundant forests, and natural beauty. Morgantown offers a quieter, more rural setting, providing a true escape from city life while still being accessible to necessary services and attractions.

Spearsville Road, which leads to Camp Buckwood, is described in reviews as a "bit dodgy" with "Lots of curves and hills and blind turns." It's noted to be "only one and a half lanes wide with a sharp drop off on the edge," requiring drivers to "take care and go slow," especially when towing trailers. For large RVs or first-timers, an alternative route from SR 135 (just after Bill Monroe Campground) is mentioned as a less recommended option due to windy, curvy roads, suggesting the main access via Spearsville Road, while challenging, might be the most direct.

Despite the challenging access road, the overall location in Brown County is a significant draw. It's situated "30 miles south of Indianapolis," making it a feasible weekend getaway from the state capital. The area is celebrated for its "breathtaking views, year round, and there is an abundance of wildlife," providing a perfect backdrop for outdoor activities. Nearby attractions mentioned by the campground's website include Nashville, Indiana, the county seat of Brown County, known for its "incredibly unique shops" (over 200) and its reputation as a "mecca for artists of all types." Additionally, the largest State Park in Indiana is just outside Nashville, offering "beautiful nature trails, overlooks, guided horseback rides as well as RV and tent camping (just in case we are full!)." Essential services like a Dollar General in nearby Bean Blossom are also available for forgotten items.

The secluded nature of the location, while requiring careful navigation, contributes to the tranquil and immersive outdoor experience that Camp Buckwood aims to provide.

Services Offered

Camp Buckwood provides a comprehensive array of services designed to enhance the camping and lodging experience for its guests. Based on detailed customer reviews and public information, these services are tailored to cater to various preferences, from rustic campers to those seeking more luxurious amenities:

  • Diverse Campsites: The campground features several different sections for camping, including multiple tent sections and RV sites. There are even "seasonal tenters," indicating long-term tent site rentals, which is a unique offering. RV sites are available with water and 50 amp electric hookups. For the more adventurous, there's a "very primitive camping" section on a hiking trail behind the pond, offering no water, no electric, and a distance from the main facilities.

  • Lodge and Suites: A "very unique perk" is the presence of a "beautiful Lodge with bunkhouse and suites." This offers a comfortable alternative to traditional camping, providing beds and more conventional lodging options. Some suites include a "new deck and patio area."

  • Food and Dining: The property features a "food truck!" (Buck's Grill) which sometimes offers "specials from the lodge restaurant." Buck's Grill has specific operating hours for Breakfast (Sat & Sun: 8:30a-10:30a), Lunch (Fri, Sat & Sun: 12 Noon-3p), and Dinner (Fri & Sat: 6p-9p), ensuring hot meals are available. Breakfast and dinner are also included with the suites in the Lodge.

  • Swimming Facilities: The "pool area is beautiful," featuring "actually two swimming pools and a very large hot tub." These facilities are noted for having "plenty of seating," tables, and covered shaded areas, which is a significant convenience for guests.

  • Bathhouses and Restrooms: The campground boasts "beautiful" new bathrooms at the pool area, described as "very nicely tiled and appealing and comfortable. And conveniently equipped," indicating a high standard of cleanliness and comfort.

  • Hiking Trails: Guests can enjoy "a couple of hiking trails" on the property, including one that goes around the pond, allowing for immersive nature experiences.

  • Night Lighting: Pathways between different "neighborhoods" (sections of the campground) are "lit up with rope lights on the ground" at night, enhancing safety and ambiance.

  • Designated Parking: Due to close site proximity in some areas, there is "no room for parking your vehicle on your site here." All vehicles must be parked in "designated parking areas," with two noted to be right next to campers.

  • Onsite Lake: The property includes a "2.5 acre lake stocked with large mouth bass, catfish and blue gill," offering fishing opportunities, although a review noted it "would be nice to see them make more use of the pond."

  • Recreational Amenities: Beyond hiking and swimming, other amenities mentioned include a "natural swimming hole, basic free weight Gym, barns, sand volleyball courts, horse shoe pits, croquet, and bocce ball."

Features / Highlights

Camp Buckwood offers several compelling features and highlights that make it a distinctive choice for campers and visitors in Indiana. These attributes contribute to its reputation as a "cute, compact, friendly property" and "one of my favorites" among reviewers:

  • Diverse Accommodation Options: From very primitive tent sites for the true wilderness enthusiast to RV sites with water and 50 amp electric, and even luxurious bunkhouses and suites in the Lodge, Camp Buckwood caters to a broad spectrum of preferences. The presence of "seasonal tenters" and elaborate tent sites highlights its unique flexibility in camping styles.

  • Exceptional Pool Area: A major highlight is the "beautiful" pool area, featuring "two swimming pools and a very large hot tub." The abundance of seating, tables, and covered shaded areas around the pools is particularly noted as superior to other properties, eliminating the need to "claim your lounge chair first thing in the morning." This provides a relaxed and comfortable aquatic experience.

  • High-Quality Facilities: The "new bathrooms at the pool area are just beautiful. Very nicely tiled and appealing and comfortable. And conveniently equipped." This attention to clean and modern facilities significantly enhances the guest experience.

  • On-Site Dining Convenience: The presence of "Buck's Grill Food Truck" offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and sometimes "specials from the lodge restaurant," provides convenient and delicious dining options, allowing guests to avoid cooking or leaving the property for meals.

  • Beautiful Lodge with Inclusions: The "beautiful Lodge with bunkhouse and suites" is a unique perk. The fact that "Breakfast and dinner are included with the suites" adds significant value and comfort for lodge guests. The new deck and patio area outside some suites further enhance the glamping experience.

  • Nature and Recreation Opportunities: With "a couple of hiking trails," including one around the pond, and a stocked 2.5-acre lake, the campground encourages outdoor activity and connection with nature in scenic Brown County. The property is also described as a "men-only campground," which for its specific target audience, is a key feature fostering a particular community atmosphere. A review notes, "A private, members only retreat on 48 acres."

  • Creative and Evolving Environment: Reviewers consistently notice "something cleverly created somewhere" and appreciate seeing "the newest and latest seasonal improvement" each year. This dedication to ongoing enhancements, such as a new memorial dock, keeps the experience fresh and exciting for returning guests.

  • Illuminated Pathways: The "rope lights on the ground" lighting up pathways between different sections at night add to the ambiance and safety of the campground.

However, it is crucial to address a very serious concern raised in one review. An individual recounted an experience with a "belligerent, drunk racist man" who was "completely unprofessional," leading them to state, "As a person of color and a member of the lgbtq community, I do not recommend this place to anyone between the ages of 21 and 45 it's clearly a retirement home for racism." This single, but severe, review of alleged racism and disrespect is a critical point that prospective visitors, particularly individuals of color and LGBTQ+ individuals, should be aware of and consider carefully. The management's response to such incidents and their commitment to inclusivity would be paramount for ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all guests.

Promotions or Special Offers

Specific, time-sensitive "promotions or special offers" are not explicitly detailed in the provided information for Camp Buckwood, as is common for many established campgrounds that maintain consistent pricing structures. However, the reviews hint at certain value-added inclusions and a general appreciation for ongoing improvements that can be seen as a form of "special offer" to returning guests.

Based on the provided data, we can infer the following aspects that contribute to the value proposition for guests:

  • Inclusions with Lodge Suites: A significant benefit is that "Breakfast and dinner are included with the suites." This adds substantial value to a Lodge stay, reducing the need for guests to budget for or prepare these meals separately.

  • Seasonal Improvements and Surprises: Reviewers consistently mention the excitement of discovering "the newest and latest seasonal improvement" upon arrival. While not a direct discount, this commitment to enhancing the property year after year (e.g., adding new seasonal spots, a new memorial dock) effectively provides an evolving and enriched experience for returning visitors, acting as an ongoing draw.

  • Range of Site Pricing: The availability of diverse site types, from "very primitive camping" (no water, no electric) to full RV hookups and luxurious lodge suites, suggests a pricing structure that caters to different budgets, allowing guests to choose the "offer" that best fits their financial and comfort needs.

Prospective campers are always encouraged to visit Camp Buckwood's official website or contact them directly via phone to inquire about current rates, availability, and any specific packages or deals that might be running. Given the detailed amenities, it would be prudent to ask about bundled packages for longer stays or specific inclusions for different site types. It's also important to clarify the full costs, including any daily passes or membership requirements if applicable, as the campground is described as a "private, members only retreat."

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

Camp Buckwood, located in the scenic Brown County of Morgantown, Indiana, presents a unique and compelling option for locals seeking a diverse camping and recreational experience. Despite the challenging nature of Spearsville Road leading to the property, the destination itself offers a rich array of features that cater to various preferences, making it suitable for a wide range of Hoosiers.

For those who love the outdoors, Camp Buckwood's diverse site options – from very primitive tent camping to comfortable RV sites and even luxurious lodge suites – mean there's a setting for every comfort level. The presence of multiple hiking trails around the property, including one around a stocked pond, invites exploration and connection with nature. The appreciation for "seasonal tenters" highlights a unique community aspect, fostering long-term engagement and a sense of belonging for some.

The amenities at Camp Buckwood are a significant draw. The "beautiful" pool area with two pools, a large hot tub, and ample seating provides excellent opportunities for relaxation and recreation. The high quality of the "beautifully tiled" and "conveniently equipped" new bathhouses further enhances the comfort of guests. The convenience of an on-site food truck, Buck's Grill, offering meals and specials, and included breakfast and dinner with Lodge suites, adds a layer of ease and luxury to the camping experience.

The emphasis on continuous improvement, with "cleverly created" additions each year and "exciting surprises" for seasonal campers, demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the guest experience. This dynamic approach ensures that returning visitors always have something new to discover, fostering a loyal community.

However, it is crucial for prospective visitors to be aware of and consider the severe negative review regarding an alleged incident of racism and unprofessional conduct. Camp Buckwood explicitly identifies itself as a "men-only campground" and a "private, members only retreat," which, for many within the LGBTQ+ community, could be a draw. However, the serious nature of the reported racist and disrespectful behavior from an individual associated with the campground raises significant concerns about inclusivity and safety, particularly for people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community. While the property's features are appealing, potential visitors must weigh these reported experiences carefully. For those who find comfort and enjoyment within its specific community type and who feel confident in the management's commitment to addressing and preventing such incidents, Camp Buckwood offers a highly amenitized and engaging outdoor retreat in the heart of Indiana's beautiful Brown County.

My second visit to this cute, compact, friendly property. It's one of my favorites. 🤩They have several different sections or communities. (With names lol) 🤭 There are tents and RVs hidden all over the place, even behind each other. 🫣 Three completely different tent 🏕️sections! They actually have seasonal tenters here which I've never seen before. 😲 Some of these tent sites are more elaborate than the smaller RV sites! 🎪 There's even a section on the 🥾 hiking trail back behind the pond for very primitive ⛺camping. No water, no electric, and pretty far from the pool area or bath house. Every time I walk around the property I notice something cleverly created somewhere. 😊 This year they've added six new seasonal spots, mostly by creativity. 😉The spots are very close together. 🙈There is no room for parking your vehicle on your site here. 🛻Everybody has to park in the designated parking areas.🅿️ Two of which are right next to campers anyway.🤦🏻‍♂️ It's always nice to revisit one of these 🌈properties and see the newest and latest seasonal improvement. 🤩 It's an exciting surprise for the seasonals to arrive and see what is new and exciting 🥳 This year is a new memorial dock.🛶 It would be nice to see them make more use of the pond. There is a hiking trail around it. 🥾Actually they have a couple of hiking trails here. 🚶🏻‍♂️ And at night the pathways between the different neighborhoods are lit up with rope lights on the ground. 👀 The pool area is beautiful. 🥰 There are actually two swimming pools and a very large hot tub♨️. It is so wonderful at night! This is only the second property of this type I have visited with plenty of seating around the pool. 🪑So it's not necessary to claim your lounge chair first thing in the morning 😑 and then disappear for the rest of the day. 🫣 Also this pool area has more tables and covered shaded areas than any other property I can remember. That's quite nice. 😃 And a food truck! 😋 Sometimes offering specials from the lodge restaurant.🍽️ And the bathrooms, the new ones at the pool area are just beautiful. Very nicely tiled and appealing and comfortable. And conveniently equipped. 😉⛲🤭🍑 A very unique perk at this property is the beautiful Lodge with bunkhouse and suites. Breakfast 🥞 and 🍽️ are included with the suites. This also has a new deck and patio area outside a couple of the suites. The neighborhood road can be a bit dodgy. Spearsville road. Lots of curves and hills and blind turns. It's only one and a half lanes wide with a sharp drop off on the edge so you don't want to get your trailer tires off the pavement. The locals will come at you quite quickly so take care and go slow

I have never been more disrespected by anyone in my entire life. I don't know who the belligerent, drunk racist man was. We decided to take photos of my license plate and berate me for coming back into the campsite today to get my I. D after I was leaving for the night but not only was he racist, he was drunk out of his mind and completely unprofessional. As a person of color and a member of the lgbtq community, I do not recommend this place to anyone between the ages of 21 and 45 it's clearly a retirement home for racism I spent good money there and it being my first time I didn't read the fine print. The man at the front desk never told me anything about curfew so to be treated like the trash that I'm not was not only an uncomfortable and jarring experience but one I would not wish on my worst enemy.
