For Pennsylvanians seeking a genuine, unplugged outdoor experience infused with local history and a sense of enduring tradition, Camp Hallowing Run in Sunbury is a destination that stands apart. More than just a campground, this location has served as a cherished piece of Central Pennsylvania’s outdoor heritage, primarily associated with the values and mission of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). While its history is deeply rooted in youth development, the facilities and setting provide an ideal, rustic escape for a variety of local groups, families, and individual campers looking for a clean, well-maintained, and authentic retreat.
The core identity of Camp Hallowing Run is one of tradition and genuine outdoor immersion. Customer reviews highlight that the camp maintains a deliberately rustic atmosphere, a characteristic that modern, resort-style campgrounds often lose. The presence of "rustic latrine toilets" is noted as a feature that "keep(s) it feeling really genuine," appealing directly to the local camper who appreciates a true back-to-basics experience. This commitment to maintaining a traditional camp environment does not, however, mean a lack of care. On the contrary, the current caretakers—often described as the "responsible troop"—are praised for keeping the "buildings very well maintained," ensuring a clean and functional environment despite the rustic nature.
This blend of authenticity and meticulous upkeep creates a uniquely appealing environment. The campground offers an "abundance of trees and large rocks and boulders" left behind from the glacial era, providing beautiful, natural scenery and privacy that is difficult to find elsewhere. Visitors can choose from "a lot of good campsites," suggesting ample room and variety for tent camping enthusiasts. The historical significance is palpable; it’s a place where "Lots of great history lies," and one that has "impacted" many young leaders by instilling crucial scouting skills and the core BSA mission. For Pennsylvanians, choosing Camp Hallowing Run is not just a booking a campsite; it is stepping into a piece of local heritage, supporting the ongoing maintenance of a historic site, and embracing the foundational principles of outdoor leadership and environmental stewardship.

A great camp site. Rustic latrine toilets keep it feeling really genuine. The responsible troop keeps the buildings very well maintained. The tent camping area has a lot of good campsites to choose from.
Apr 29, 2018 · Tim HabichLots of great history lies here. Many Boy Scouts were impacted by this place. Scouting skills and the BSA's mission builds strong leaders etc.
Jan 06, 2025 · Paul HeilmanVery nice camp for groups like scout troops. Very well insulated and propane heated cabin with 30 beds, including about 12 sectioned in another room for another gender or leaders. Dining hall with stocked kitchen and professional stove, two refrigerators, wood stove, plenty of seating and can be over for overflow sleeping quarters for adults. Hot and cold water indoors make this a great place to bring your troop. Latrines are about what you'd expect. Bring your own TP. Plenty of parking and a beautiful area for lots of tents. Look out for the red gates and come in either direction depending on how much pavement you prefer.
May 08, 2022 · David Brieck JrGoogle Maps location needs updating, navigation stops before the road to the site. Look for the red metal gates on the left of Boy Scout Road, around the curve after the navigation ends, road leads uphill. Excellent campsite otherwise.
Nov 10, 2018 · Michael WeidenhamerMy uncle Harvey Zerbe was a scout master of the troop that used the camp. Had some good times there growing up.
