For Pennsylvania residents looking for an established, family-friendly destination that balances essential RV amenities with engaging recreational activities, Fantasy Island Campground in Sunbury is a popular and well-known Central PA choice. This seasonal campground, typically open from mid-April through mid-October, is perfectly situated on Packer Island along the picturesque Susquehanna River, creating a unique environment for both quick getaways and extended seasonal stays.
Fantasy Island Campground is marketed as a family-friendly spot, and its appeal largely revolves around the friendly, accommodating staff and the vibrant community atmosphere created by its mix of transient and seasonal campers. As one customer review attests, "We really enjoyed our stay here! The staff was very friendly and accommodating." This positive interaction with the team enhances the overall experience, fostering a welcoming environment where guests feel at home. Furthermore, the campground actively promotes a sense of community, with one reviewer noting the enjoyment of meeting and talking with their neighbors, highlighting the social aspect of the location.
However, prospective visitors from the PA region should set expectations regarding the physical infrastructure. Multiple customer reports indicate that the park is "showing some serious age." Specific concerns include the condition of the interior roads, which are described as "very rough with lots of potholes," and the poured concrete pads, which are noted as "almost completely disintegrating." Campers should be prepared for potential challenges, particularly during or after rainfall, as observations included "lots of pooling water" and conditions that "almost looked as if the park was partly flooding."
While the general appearance may not live up to expectations—one review stated, "Not the classiest RV park we’ve ever seen, according to the advertising we were expecting something nicer"—the campground excels in providing core services and key recreational features. The utilities are functional, though their placement can be awkward, requiring RVers to use extensions for hoses or navigate sewer connections that are "almost under your RV once parked on the pad." The sites themselves can be "pretty tight accommodations," and many of the transient spots are located within an area largely occupied by seasonal campers who have a significant amount of outdoor "stuff" around their RVs. Despite these caveats, the core recreational amenities, such as "The pool was amazing!", continue to provide significant value and enjoyment, particularly when paired with cost-saving measures like Passport America, which makes the nightly price "good."
Fantasy Island Campground is centrally and uniquely located at 401 Park Dr, Sunbury, PA 17801, USA. This address places it squarely on Packer Island, which sits strategically between the towns of Sunbury and Northumberland. This position is significant for local Pennsylvanians, as the island is where the North and West branches of the Susquehanna River conjoin, forming the expansive Lake Augusta.
The accessibility is excellent for drivers from across the Commonwealth, being close to major roadways while offering the seclusion of an island retreat. Its location on the river means guests have direct access to water recreation on the 3,000-acre lake formed by the Adam T. Bower Memorial Dam. Crucially for families and outdoor enthusiasts, the campground is situated directly across from a major regional natural resource. As one satisfied customer pointed out, "Shikellamy State park is right across the road and a beautiful place to hang out!" This proximity to one of the region’s key state parks offers easy access to hiking, river views, and historical observation points without requiring any significant travel. The location is also within easy driving distance of other major PA attractions like Knoebels Amusement Resort, making it an ideal staging point for exploring Central Pennsylvania.
The campground offers a comprehensive suite of services geared towards a comfortable and amenity-rich RV and camping experience, catering to both overnight and seasonal guests.
The true appeal of Fantasy Island Campground lies in its array of recreational features, which are specifically designed to be "family friendly" and to foster the social environment that is often praised by local campers.

Fantasy Island Campground is highly suitable for Pennsylvania locals seeking a familiar, affordable, and activity-packed seasonal camping destination. Its prime Central PA location on the Susquehanna River offers immediate access to the scenic beauty and outdoor recreation of Lake Augusta and the nearby Shikellamy State Park. This convenience minimizes travel time and maximizes vacation time for PA residents.
While the physical infrastructure shows its age, and sites can be tight, the campground delivers on the most important elements of a family camping experience: exceptional staff friendliness, functional full hook-up utilities, and robust recreational features like the popular heated pool and scheduled entertainment. The mix of transient and seasonal campers creates a unique and welcoming community atmosphere, which is a major draw for repeat visitors. For local RVers who prioritize a lively, social environment and a strong line-up of family activities over luxury accommodations, and who appreciate an affordable overnight rate (especially when using discounts like Passport America), Fantasy Island Campground offers a great base to relax, connect with nature, and explore the heart of Central Pennsylvania. It is a genuine, local spot to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures of the Pennsylvania outdoors.

The campground is showing some serious age. The roads are very rough with lots of potholes, and the concrete pads are almost completely disintegrating. We came in on a day that was raining and there was lots of pooling water. It almost looked as if the park was partly flooding. The price though was good as we used our Passport America. I think if you need a place to stay for a night this is fine. The utilities all worked, but their location is tough. I had to add an extension for my water hose, and the sewer connection is almost under your RV once parked on the pad. They do have some gravel sites that were actually more level than the concrete pads. I will give them credit as the staff was very nice. We even met our neighbors campers and enjoyed talking with them. Much of the park is filled with permanent or at least seasonal people. These guys have lots of stuff outside of their RVs.
Jul 25, 2025 · Bill CooperWe really enjoyed our stay here! The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Not the classiest RV park we’ve ever seen, according to the advertising we were expecting something nicer. Also pretty tight accommodations. But still a good spot to relax. The pool was amazing! Shikellamy State park is right across the road and a beautiful place to hang out! Don’t forget to check out Pelicans Snoballs if you’re in the area!
Jul 29, 2025 · DeAnna WiseNOT FAMILY FRIENDLY. My husband and I came back to fantasy island after a wonderful initial stay a few years ago. The bathrooms were clean, the showers were hot, and the campground was nice and quiet. Unfortunately, upon our return this year, with our 11 month old, we discovered that it has really gone downhill since then. The bathrooms are filthy and never seemed to be cleaned the whole time we were here. Trash is all over the floor and the toilets are horrific. The showers only had freezing cold water and the light in the bathroom shut off midway through my shower with my baby. It was terrifying. There aren’t even any emergency or floodlights. This seems very dangerous to me, and it scared both my son and I. There is also nowhere to dress a little one after a shower or have them sit. We brought a highchair into the shower which worked okay except my son screamed the whole time I bathed him since the water was freezing. It’s also 10 pm currently and people are being loud and obnoxious and nobody seems to be doing anything about that. They tout how family-friendly they are, but that’s only if your children are older I guess. Don’t camp here with a baby or toddler, it’s miserable.
Jun 23, 2025 · Katherine MortonI’ve been coming here for the past few years and they were good years, until this year.. I booked Sunday thru Tuesday and when we arrived I asked if we could stay till Wednesday and they said no problem as they had 13 empty transit sites open all week and the weather was beautiful… So Tuesday we woke up and were not feeling well so I asked if I could withdraw the extra night or if I could just save it till next year, Mr W said no sorry you must give 20 days in advance, so I said I’ll still by the night can’t I just use next year, I mean there still getting my money either way, he said he would have to call the owner but he didn’t cause he was sure it would be no…. The place is nice but service wasn’t to par this year!
Aug 05, 2025 · todd fochtSo we stayed in the two cabins they have available and would give them a 7/10. Everything functioned in cabin 98. Older appliances but functioned well. Basic cabin setup good enough for a place to crash, cook and shower. Cabin 99 had the same functionality and setup. Enough room for 3-4 cars to park and dog friendly. We had a family of eight between the two. The pavilion and mini golf were very old school but functioned well. A lot of older games and an older camp store that had basic essentials . The pool was well maintained and clean. If you're looking for big resort campground with a lot of space and amenities this is not the place. This is an old school quiet small campground with the minimum for a campers experience.
