Introduction / Overview
For Minnesota residents seeking a truly tranquil and immersive nature experience without sacrificing comfortable amenities, the **Cart-in Campground** at Glendalough State Park stands out as an exceptional choice. Unlike many campgrounds overrun with RVs and vehicle traffic, this unique facility near Battle Lake is dedicated exclusively to providing a quiet, primitive-style camping environment for tent campers and cabin users. The entire atmosphere is designed to remove the sight and sound of vehicles from your immediate campsite, fostering a deeper connection with the surrounding hardwood forest and prairie landscape.
The concept is simple: you park your vehicle in a designated lot, load your gear onto one of the **provided wheeled carts**, and manually transport your belongings to your campsite. This deliberate separation from vehicle access ensures that the campground paths are **winding and serene and heavily wooded with mature hardwoods**, creating a peaceful retreat where, as one happy local noted, "even your closest neighbors can seem farther away."
The campground includes 22 tent sites and four modern camper cabins, all situated within easy reach of the park’s pristine centerpiece, Annie Battle Lake—a designated “Heritage Fishery” where no motors are allowed. Time has truly been good to this park, with recent investments ensuring a clean, comfortable, and well-maintained facility that serves as a beautiful gateway to the best of west-central Minnesota's outdoors.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
The Cart-in Campground at Glendalough State Park is a perfect match for Minnesota residents looking to unplug and enjoy the state's natural beauty with a slight, worthwhile effort. Its suitability lies in its unique balance: it provides the **solitude of backcountry camping** with the convenience of modern facilities nearby. The act of carting in your gear, while initially a bit of work, pays off instantly by creating a vehicle-free oasis, allowing campers to truly focus on the quiet rhythm of the woods and the calm waters of Annie Battle Lake.
For locals, this is a chance to reconnect with the landscape in a meaningful way. The campground is a launchpad for every imaginable outdoor activity: exploring the 12-mile paved bike trail, paddling or fishing on the quiet lake, or simply enjoying a campfire surrounded by mature trees. The availability of **four camper cabins** also makes it an excellent option for families or those who want a cozier experience, rain or shine. By focusing on tent-only and cart-in access, Glendalough has successfully cultivated a peaceful atmosphere that makes the effort of the haul completely worth the dream weekend that awaits.
It is a decent campground. All of the sites are well shaded under tall trees. There are four camper cabins and all the other sites are tent sites. The outer ring campsites are more secluded. The sites on the lake side are the best. The bathrooms are next to the parking lot and not centrally located at all. Some of the most southern sites are quite a ways from the parking area and a good distance to cart in all you stuff. I did see a ton of poison ivy along some of the campsites.
Oct 13, 2023 · Wyatt W. PenkeThis is my third time here (in 20 years). Time has been good to this park. It is a beautiful place, always has been. They have invested a great deal into this park to have something for everyone. **Aside from a macho cyclist decked out in a matchy matchy kit and fast gogo racing bike who nearly took us out because it was apparently his personal track**we had a dream weekend at the cart in campground. Though busy, the sandy beach and clear water provided respite from the late day heat and humidity. I took a nice bike ride on a rental from the Galloping Goose after a warm shower in some really nice facilities at the campground. It storms here every time I visit but I enjoy that as well. Raccoons are sneaky-keep food locked up. The campground paths are winding and serene and heavily wooded with mature hardwoods so even your closest neighbors can seem farther away. I love Minnesota State Parks and have never had a bad experience here. Clean, comfortable and surprisingly very few mosquitoes considering our site is in a densely wooded area next to a swampy part of lake. I will return for a day trip just to explore more of the parts and amenities.
