We recently stayed at the Possum Kingdom Chaparral Trail Campgrounds, and it was a wonderful experience for the whole family! The campground is clean, and the sites are well-maintained. Sound travels well here, so if noise from other campers bothers you, bring earplugs. We brought our small Starcraft popup trailer, which fit perfectly. The canoe-friendly lake access was a highlight – we enjoyed calm waters and scenic views while paddling. Our kids had a blast exploring the trails, and it’s a great spot if you’re looking to disconnect and enjoy nature. Highly recommend for families or anyone looking to unwind.

This portion of the park is the furthest spot from all the amenities, and the showers were under repair while we were there. The lake views are beautiful! But it is important know that the marina and the hiking trails are on the other side of the park. Be prepared to bike or drive if you're going to leave your campsite.

Our rough and rugged, annual guys trip on the Brazos was flooded out, so we called an audible the day before and ended up at the Chaparral Trail Campground in Possum Kingdom State Park. We. Had. A. Blast. Hung our Hammocks and rain tarps by the lake, cooked meals on the fire, and got busted by the park ranger for being too loud after the 10pm quite time curfew, among other things🍷🍻 we were let off with a stern warning and the promise of a round of tickets if it happened again... Don't let it happen to you!

Camped here in early spring, and it was perfect. Not busy at all, felt luxuriously primitive with the wooded campsite and very hikable bluff behind campsite 98, and restroom/showers 250 feet away. I stayed at 100 for 3 days, then 98 for 2 days. While 100 had direct access to the water, and some walkable trails behind it, 98 was much more secluded and comfortable with a better firepit and several places to pitch a large tent, and also has a covered table with plenty of walk-around room. By far the best park camping Texas has to offer. There is also a store a 5 minute drive away within the park that has just about everything. All of the campsites have good separation but easy access, some less secluded than others. No RVs and trucks driving through this area, so it's very peaceful during spring. 97-100 are the best sites for tents in the park, but no electricity, which I prefer. The bluff behind these sites has some great views of the Brazos and the short cedars offer great views of the night sky. This place does not disappoint. Only suggestion is to get some better ventilation in the bathrooms, I could not imagine how they would be in the summer.

Eastern most of the campgrounds in the park, Chaparral Trails is a water-only (tent) camping area on a heavily wooded bluff above the water. Two restrooms, one with showers, and a small playground area. Beautiful wooded area, good separation between individual sites. A bit of a haul to the most developed part of the park, (boat ramp, marina, etc.)--but that lessens the boat and boater noise of the more public areas-which can be a problem in summer.
