This campground is more than just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it’s a vibrant, family-friendly community where campers genuinely "chip in to give a hand with projects and events," creating a unique and engaging environment.

Located in the scenic Western PA foothills, Chess Falls Campground offers a refreshing blend of rustic charm and continuous improvement. Reviews highlight its positive attributes, with one camper noting, "Family-friendly seasonal campground that all the camp family will chip in to give a hand with projects and events. With many new upgrades." This speaks volumes about the proactive nature of the community and the commitment to enhancing the camping experience.

Another reviewer aptly described the essence of Chess Falls Campground: "A community of people who enjoy the outdoors." This emphasis on a shared love for outdoor living and camaraderie suggests an inviting atmosphere for both new visitors and seasonal residents. While concerns about the long-term affordability of lot rates are mentioned—"How long it will be America's affordable housing is anyone's guess. Let's hope that lot rates remain reasonable,"—it underscores that for now, the community offers a valued and accessible option for outdoor enthusiasts.

It's important to note that public information suggests Chess Falls Campground may be part of or closely associated with the larger Mahaffey Camp and Conference Center facilities. This affiliation means a blend of traditional campground offerings alongside a potential array of additional amenities and activities, especially during specific event periods like Family Camp in July. Mahaffey is a small borough, contributing to the quiet and natural setting of the campground.

The campground's location along the Mahaffey Grampian Highway suggests good road access for vehicles, including RVs, making it relatively straightforward for campers to reach from various parts of Pennsylvania. Promotions or Special Offers

For Chess Falls Campground, particularly if it's managed in conjunction with the Mahaffey Camp and Conference Center, the "promotions" often take the form of structured rate offerings for different types of stays and accommodations, rather than traditional short-term discounts. These are designed to provide value for various visitor needs, from short overnight stays to full seasonal commitments.

Publicly available rate sheets (such as those from Mahaffey Camp) indicate tiered pricing, which can be seen as a promotional structure for longer stays:

  • Daily Rates vs. Full Stay Rates: For RV and tent sites, a "Full Stay" (e.g., 9 nights / 10 days) often has a lower per-night cost than booking individual nights. This encourages longer visits.

  • Variety of Site Pricing: Different rates apply for tent sites (no hookup), water/electric only sites, and full hookup (water/electric/sewage) sites, allowing campers to choose based on their budget and needs.

  • Winter Storage Permits: The availability of a full-year winter storage permit for RVs ($375.00 with no occupancy, based on older rates) is a valuable "offer" for seasonal campers, providing convenience and security for their units during the off-season. Short-stay storage permits are also available.

  • Meal Ticket Options (during Family Camp): The option to purchase meal tickets for the Dining Hall during specific events like Family Camp provides convenience and potentially a cost-effective way to manage meals for a longer stay, with child rates often available.

While specific "discount codes" may not be advertised, the value lies in these structured rates. To confirm the most current rates and any specific availability for seasonal sites or special events, it is highly recommended to contact Chess Falls Campground or the Mahaffey Camp office directly. When inquiring, ask about:

  • Current daily, weekly, or full-stay rates for your desired site type (tent, water/electric, full hookup).

  • Availability and pricing for seasonal sites and any associated waiting lists (especially for winter storage).

  • Details on "rent rates" as one reviewer mentioned, and how "lot rates remain reasonable."

  • Information on any upcoming events or projects that enhance the community experience.

The core "promotion" of Chess Falls Campground is its family-friendly, community-driven atmosphere with a commitment to continuous upgrades and reasonable pricing for a true outdoor experience in Pennsylvania.

Giving it a 5 star for now. I've been with my wife for almost 20 years now; almost 11 of those are married, and it's a great community. Safest place a child could be. Friendly people and a great atmosphere. New owners took over and they started adding electrical service; if one would like to hook their campers or such to have electrical access, and bathrooms accessible to the public. Drive very slowly through the area, due to the fact that children run around constantly and everyone watches everyone's child. So the people will let you know; or you could be asked to leave or removed from the premises, if you drive over 5mph or are just being dangerous in general. It was a small community of somewhat locals and some out of towners, but more and more are flocking there because of how nice it is. I'm not sure if there are any trails, but the river is literally right over the embankment where the campers are. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, rafting and so many other activities to do. They have events frequently during the summer like potlucks that literally everyone contributes to, bingo every so often, fireworks during the 4th of July, music with a DJ once in a while and more. Just with the amount of people there, there's always something to do. There's picnics, family gatherings, small parties and everyone gets along. It's not rare to have someone just pop up and start a conversation or invite strangers to eat with them. Now, the reason I'm saying I'll give it 5 stars for now is because of the amount of people and newcomers starting to appear. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but sometimes letting a small camping community get too big, will start to lose the appeal it has. But like I've said, we welcome everyone and no discrimination, violence or crime has ever happened since I've been going down there over the last 15+ years. And from what I understand, there hasn't been any problems years and years prior either. And that's what makes it feel safe and is a very welcoming area. My family goes down every weekend, and my children love it down there. So many friends, friendly people and just a beautiful area in general. We just ask that you respect the locals, respect the land, respect the children and respect mother nature while you're here. Very wonderful area and I hope it continues to be such.

Nice quiet place to camp along side the river. People are friendly and helpful. Showers and restrooms are clean, they have a basketball court and fire rings through out. Nice place to visit
