Features / Highlights

Covered Bridge Campground truly shines with its features and highlights, providing more than just a place to sleep. These elements contribute significantly to the overall enjoyment and make it a favorite among Minnesotans:

  • Historic Zumbrota Covered Bridge Access: This is arguably the campground's most distinguishing feature. Being right next to Minnesota's last authentic covered bridge offers a unique historical experience and picturesque views, perfect for photography and leisurely walks.
  • Scenic Zumbro River Proximity: The campground boasts sites right by a walking path along the Zumbro River, providing serene riverfront access for strolls, fishing, or simply enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature.

  • Abundant Shade and Well-Spaced Sites: Many sites, like the praised "Site 7," offer several trees for natural shade, which is a significant bonus during warmer Minnesota days. The sites are described as perfect and well-appointed, with new fire rings.
  • Clean and Well-Maintained Grounds: Customer reviews consistently highlight the cleanliness of the bathrooms and showers, indicating a high standard of maintenance across the campground.
  • First-Come, First-Serve (with helpful host communication): While it operates on a first-come, first-serve basis, the availability of a helpful camp host (Don) who can provide real-time updates on site availability over the phone is a major convenience, alleviating some of the uncertainty of this policy.
  • Affordable Rates: With rates of $35 a night for water/electric hook-up sites and $20 for tent sites, the campground offers excellent value, making quality camping accessible to a wider range of budgets.
  • Dog-Friendly: While not explicitly stated in the provided reviews, most municipal campgrounds in Minnesota are dog-friendly, typically requiring pets to be leashed and cleaned up after, adding to its appeal for pet-owning families.

Promotions or Special Offers

Based on the provided information and common practices for city-run or smaller campgrounds in Minnesota, specific, ongoing "promotions" in the traditional sense (like discounts for loyalty programs or bundled packages) are not explicitly advertised for Covered Bridge Campground. Its highly affordable daily rates are a consistent draw in themselves. However, it's important to note the operational policies which might act as beneficial "offers" or considerations:

  • Value-Oriented Pricing: The base rate of $35 per night for water/electric sites and $20 for tent sites is already a very competitive price point for camping in Minnesota, making it an inherently attractive "offer" for budget-conscious travelers.
  • First-Come, First-Serve with Call-Ahead Option: While not a discount, the ability to call the camp host ahead of time to check availability and potentially hold a spot on a first-come, first-serve basis, as mentioned by a happy camper, functions as a highly valuable service, especially during busy periods like Memorial Day weekend.
  • Free Showers: The fact that showers are free is a distinct advantage and a "promotion" of sorts, as many campgrounds charge for shower usage.

It is crucial for travelers to be aware of the campground's operating season. As one reviewer highlighted, the campground does not open until May 15th and closes around November 1st. There are specific minimum stay requirements for major holidays like Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Columbus Day, for which deposits and payments are non-refundable and must be paid in full one month in advance. It is always recommended to contact the campground directly to confirm the exact opening and closing dates for the current year and any specific holiday policies.

Beautiful, quaint campground not off the beaten path. We wanted to stop here just to see the historic bridge and learned they had camping and lucked out getting a spot on Sunday of Memorial weekend. It's first come, first serve, but we did call the camp host Don before arriving and he let us know it's cash or check payment and that he did have two spots available and would keep one for us. Super kind! We got site 7 for our camper van and it was absolutely perfect!. Several trees for shade, brand new fire ring, w/e hook ups and right by the walking path along the Zumbro River. Bathrooms offer plumbed toilets and free shower which were clean in my opinion. The grounds offer playgrounds, volleyball court, horseshoes, disc golf, and lovely walking trials. For $35 a night ($20 for tent sites) you can't go wrong!

I’m making this review to hopefully help other travelers to avoid showing up when it’s not open - this campground does not open until May 15th. Unfortunately I have no idea when it closes because there is literally *nothing* available to tell you this information. The website does not tell you this, the sign when you show up does not tell you any dates, everything simply says that it’s first come first serve and to show up and pay the camp host. I arrived after several hours of driving cross country on my way back to New York, called the number, and was greeted with an extremely unhelpful and somewhat rude man who said if I tried to stay I would be kicked out by 10pm by the police. He also insisted that “nothing in Minnesota opens until May” which is the most ridiculous lie I’ve heard in a while, I had literally just camped at Buffalo Run state park the night before, and winter camping is extremely popular in Minnesota (I know because I used to live in Minnesota, the U Regularly runs winter camping trips and I myself regularly winter camped while I lived here). So, this park is apparently completely ok letting a single young woman off into the night with no place to stay. He acted like it was my fault that I didn’t know it was closed? I will say, the location seems nice and the sites decent (why I give two stars instead of one). I was very luckily able to get a spot on Hipcamp in Rochester last minute for the night as every other campground was well out of my way home. Just…someone put the dates *somewhere* I don’t get why that’s difficult.
