Poplar Point Campground is conveniently located at 558 Beaver Creek Rd, Apex, NC 27502, USA. This address places it squarely within the expansive Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, a premier natural attraction in central North Carolina. Its proximity to major metropolitan areas of the Triangle region, including Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, makes it an incredibly accessible destination for a quick weekend getaway or a longer vacation. You can reach it easily via US 64, ensuring a straightforward drive for most campers.
Despite being a relatively short drive from urban centers, Poplar Point Campground successfully maintains a tranquil and immersive natural atmosphere. Reviews often commend its "very wooded" setting, which contributes to a sense of seclusion and peace. This balance of being close to urban amenities while feeling far removed in nature is a significant draw.
Accessibility within the campground itself is generally good, with many sites accommodating "big rigs," though some may require careful maneuvering. The campground also benefits from 24-hour gate access, offering convenience for campers. The direct lake frontage and easy access to Jordan Lake for boating and other water activities further enhance its appeal, making it a highly desirable location for outdoor enthusiasts throughout North Carolina.
Poplar Point Campground, as a proud component of the North Carolina State Parks system at Jordan Lake, provides a comprehensive array of services designed to ensure a comfortable and convenient camping experience for all visitors:
- Campsites with Hookups: Many sites offer electric (30 and 50 amp) and water hookups, catering to both RVs and tent campers. It's important to note that while many sites have these amenities, some do not have electricity, so campers should "pay attention" when booking.
- Restroom and Shower Facilities: The campground boasts "heated bathrooms" that are "nicer than some restaurants" according to one review, and generally "clean restrooms & showers." While one review mentioned no hand soap in sinks, the overall quality and comfort of these facilities are a significant positive.
- Sanitary Dump Stations: Poplar Point provides "great dump stations" that are "easy to access," a crucial service for RV and trailer owners for waste disposal.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for outdoor meals and cozy campfires under the stars.
- Water Access: Direct access to Jordan Lake for various water activities, including boating, fishing, and swimming.
- Campers-Only Boat Ramp: Exclusive access to a boat ramp for registered campers enhances convenience for those bringing their watercraft.
- Swimming Beach: A dedicated swimming beach area is available for cooling off and enjoying the lake.
- Playgrounds: Playgrounds are typically available within the campground area, providing entertainment for younger campers.
- Hiking Trails: Well-maintained hiking trails wind through the wooded areas, offering opportunities for nature walks and exploration.
- Firewood Sales: Firewood is generally available for purchase at the park, promoting responsible fire practices and preventing the spread of invasive pests.
- Campground Host: Campground hosts are often present in various loops to assist with questions and minor issues, adding an extra layer of support for campers.
Poplar Point Campground is celebrated for several outstanding features that make it a premier camping destination in North Carolina:
- Direct Lake Access and Views: A major highlight is its location "right on Jordan Lake," with "several sites with lake views and lake access." Specific sites like "Loop B sites 79, 80, 81 are all just amazing" for their prime lakefront positions.
- Spacious and Wooded Sites: Campers are "more than pleasantly surprised by the size of our campsite," often describing them as "very wooded," which provides a good sense of privacy.
- Big Rig Friendly: Despite the wooded setting, the campground is noted as being "big rig friendly," accommodating larger RVs and trailers.
- Clean and Modern Bathrooms: A consistent highlight in reviews is the quality of the "heated bathrooms" and showers, described as "nicer than some restaurants I've been in," offering a level of comfort not always found in campgrounds.
- Wildlife Viewing: The presence of wildlife, such as a "bald eagle just 20 feet above a camper," is an "amazing" feature that adds to the natural appeal.
- Community Atmosphere: The opportunity to "enjoy speaking with people from all over the Country" highlights a friendly and welcoming community vibe within the campground.
- Recreational Opportunities: Beyond camping, the lake offers extensive opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, and swimming. Hiking trails are also available for exploration.
- Convenient Location: It offers the ideal balance of feeling "very remote" and peaceful while being "such a short drive from the triangle area of North Carolina."
As a North Carolina State Park campground, Poplar Point operates under a structured fee system determined by the state, rather than offering frequent commercial "promotions" or discounts in the traditional retail sense. However, there are some important considerations for pricing and booking that can be beneficial for campers:
- Standardized Pricing: Camping fees are consistent and transparent, publicly available on the NC State Parks website and through the ReserveAmerica booking platform. This ensures clarity and predictability in pricing for all visitors.
- Senior and Military Discounts: A significant benefit for eligible North Carolina residents and veterans, senior citizens (aged 62 and over) may qualify for a discount on their campsite fees. It's advisable to check the official NC State Parks website for the most current discount policies and eligibility requirements.
- Advance Reservations: While not a discount, the ability to make reservations well in advance (up to 11 months for some NC State Parks, and up to 6 months for general camping) is a major advantage for securing your preferred site, especially the popular lakefront or full hookup spots, during peak seasons and weekends. "I strongly recommend making a reservation before heading out."
- Off-Season Considerations: During the colder months, individual campsite water hookups are typically shut off (though water remains available at bathhouses), and certain loops might close. However, this can sometimes mean more availability and a quieter experience for dedicated off-season campers.
- Cost-Effectiveness: State park camping generally provides a more affordable way to enjoy high-quality outdoor recreation and amenities compared to many private campgrounds or other lodging options.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on specific rates, reservation policies, and any available discounts, it is always best to consult the official North Carolina State Parks website for Jordan Lake or contact the campground directly.

Customer Reviews
Great campground right on Jordan Lake. Several sites with lake views and lake access. Loop B sites 79,80,81 are all just amazing. Weird that the restrooms are only open on the weekend but we made due. Very wooded. Big rig friendly. Pay attention some sites don't have electricity. Great dump stations, easy to access. Saw a bald eagle just 20 feet above a camper..amazing
Wasn’t sure what to expect, but we were more than pleasantly surprised by the size of our campsite. We stayed just one Friday night, but it was long enough for us to enjoy speaking with people from all over the Country. Heated bathrooms were nicer than some restaurants I’ve been in as well. If you dig camping, go check it out and I strongly recommend making a reservation before heading out.
Huge place, but sites are all very well spaced and private. So many right on the water. Well maintained place throughout. Dump station is available with four spots. Good pressure rinse water with hose connections. Working in mid November, not sure if they get shut off for winter. Potable water fills throughout the grounds. Price is very reasonable. Military discount too. Reservations are impossible short notice, but FCFS is massive and honestly, maybe nicer sites. Very nice, helpful, and professional staff. Especially Amanda at the gate who could be the highlight of the whole place. Can’t wait to come back!
Was there a bit early in the season. Not all bathhouses were open yet. Everything was quiet and clean. Large campsites, not the typical row lineup. Spaced out in lots of trees.
The area was very clean ! The bathrooms had clean and disinfected toilets and showers. Impressive. The access to view the lake from various camp sites was excellent. The woods were tranquil and with a reservation and pass, you could enter and exit as needed if you were camping overnight. As a guest , I had to pay to enter because I was not spending the night. It was well worth it. I received a senior discount to enter for $5.😉
