Location and Accessibility

Poplar Point B Loop Campground is situated in Apex, NC 27523, USA, placing it within the popular Poplar Point State Recreation Area. This prime location on the shores of Jordan Lake (officially, B. Everett Jordan Lake) is a significant draw, offering picturesque lakeside views and direct access to various water-based activities. Apex, a vibrant and growing town in Wake County, means the campground is conveniently located within the Triangle region of North Carolina, making it highly accessible for residents of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and surrounding communities.

Being part of a state recreation area ensures that the campground benefits from well-maintained roads and clear signage, facilitating easy navigation for campers arriving with RVs or towing trailers. The accessibility from major highways within the Triangle area makes it a practical choice for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation without extensive travel. Even when natural events like tropical storms impact the area, as mentioned in a review, the core location by the lake remains its primary appeal. Campers can typically find their way to their sites without significant difficulty, even with large rigs. The close proximity to Apex also means easy access to grocery stores, gas stations, and other essential amenities for any last-minute needs before settling into your campsite.

Services Offered

  • Campsites with Hookups: While the specific details of hookups (e.g., electric, water, sewer) are not explicitly provided in the reviews, as a typical campground within a state recreation area, Poplar Point B Loop would offer various campsites, likely including sites with electrical and water hookups to accommodate RVs and some tent campers who require power.

  • Restroom Facilities: The campground provides restroom facilities, though reviews indicate they are "old and not very clean like some have mentioned." Despite this, campers found them "totally usable." It’s noted that "Loop B seems to have the worst bathhouse," suggesting that facilities in other loops might be in better condition. Campers should be prepared for basic, functional restrooms rather than luxurious ones.

  • Dump Station: While not mentioned in the reviews, most state park campgrounds with RV sites provide a dump station for waste disposal, which would be an essential service for RVers staying at Poplar Point B Loop.

  • Access to Lake Activities: The primary service offered by the location itself is access to Jordan Lake for activities such as boating, fishing, kayaking, and potentially swimming (when beach areas are open and water levels permit). This is a core reason campers choose Poplar Point.

  • Recreational Opportunities: As part of Poplar Point State Recreation Area, campers have access to various recreational opportunities within the larger park, which often include hiking trails, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks, contributing to a full outdoor experience.

  • Ranger Presence/Oversight: State parks typically have ranger presence for safety, information, and assistance, providing a level of security and support for campers.

Features / Highlights

  • Lakeside Location on Jordan Lake: The paramount feature is its direct access to B. Everett Jordan Lake, a massive reservoir offering extensive opportunities for water-based recreation. This is a huge draw for boaters, anglers, and those who simply enjoy lakeside views.

  • Beautiful Scenery: Despite temporary issues like high water levels, the inherent beauty of the natural surroundings at Poplar Point is a consistent highlight. The area is known for its lush forests and expansive lake views.

  • Family-Friendly Atmosphere: Campers return to this location, often with families, indicating a safe and enjoyable environment suitable for all ages. The sense of a "best time" previously had suggests it fosters positive family memories.

  • Spacious Campground Layout: While specific site sizes aren't detailed, the B Loop is part of a larger campground area, suggesting a layout that allows for a good camping experience, even if bathhouses might be older.

  • Popular and Recommended Destination: Despite some facility age, the campground comes "totally recommend" by repeat visitors, underscoring its overall appeal and the positive experiences many campers have there.

  • Outdoor Activities: The primary highlight is the ability to engage in a wide array of outdoor activities, from fishing and boating to hiking and wildlife viewing (including birdwatching, as Jordan Lake is a prime spot for bald eagles).

  • Proximity to Apex/Triangle Area: Its location offers the best of both worlds – a natural escape with convenient access to urban amenities, restaurants, and shopping in Apex and the wider Triangle region.

Unfortunately, we arrived a few weeks out from the tropical storm that hit. Water levels were up 13 ft, and all of the beach areas were closed. Obviously, we were all disappointed because 2 months earlier, we had the best time there. It was a 4 day washout for us. We will try again next year and hope for a better outcome. I would totally recommend.

Staying here has been a nice experience, restrooms are old and not very clean like some have mentioned but they are totally usable. I have included pictures so you can see what you are getting into. Loop B seems to have the worst bathhouse from what a lady told us there.

It's a nice quiet campground, the shower rooms could use a little attention but are very usable, It's also close to stores and other attractions.

Old, dirty, even mouldy bathrooms. Add in an insistence that you cannot enter before 3 pm even when we knew (and told them) our campsite was empty Highly disappointing. Not representative of the other NC State Parks we have stayed in
