For Texans, the call of the great outdoors is often answered by the myriad of stunning natural landscapes across the state. From rugged mountains to pristine coastlines, Texas offers diverse opportunities for outdoor recreation, and camping remains a beloved pastime for many. Campgrounds provide a vital connection to nature, allowing individuals and families to unplug, explore, and create lasting memories under the wide-open Texas sky. Whether you're a seasoned camper with all the gear or a newcomer eager to experience the tranquility of the wilderness, finding the right campground can elevate your outdoor adventure.
A campground is a dedicated area, typically managed by public or private entities, that provides designated sites for pitching tents or parking recreational vehicles (RVs). These sites often come equipped with basic amenities like picnic tables and fire rings, while more developed campgrounds may offer electrical and water hookups, restrooms, showers, and even boat ramps or fishing piers. The goal of a campground is to facilitate responsible outdoor recreation, offering a safe and structured environment for visitors to enjoy nature's beauty. In Texas, campgrounds are often found near lakes, rivers, or state parks, providing access to water sports, hiking trails, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
One such gem in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), is Cranes Mill Park. Situated on the picturesque Canyon Lake, this campground offers both RV and tent camping options, inviting visitors to experience the serene beauty of the lake and its surroundings. While a recent review mentions challenges with insects, the park is highly regarded for its quiet atmosphere, shaded spots, and excellent lake access. For local Texans looking for a refreshing escape, Cranes Mill Park presents a compelling option for their next outdoor excursion.
---Cranes Mill Park (USACE) is beautifully situated at 4698 Cranes Mill Rd, Canyon Lake, TX 78133, USA. This prime location places it on the southwestern shore of Canyon Lake, a prominent and popular recreational lake in the Texas Hill Country, roughly halfway between the major cities of Austin and San Antonio. The park's position on a peninsula provides stunning lake views, including dramatic sunrises and sunsets across the water.
Accessibility to Cranes Mill Park is generally straightforward. From IH-35, north of New Braunfels, visitors can take Exit 191 (FM 306) and drive west for approximately 14 miles. A left turn onto FM 2673, just after the first Guadalupe River crossing, leads directly to the park. Following FM 2673 to its westernmost end, passing through a neighborhood and down a steep incline, will bring you to the park entrance. This well-defined route makes it relatively easy for even large RVs to navigate to the campground.
The strategic location offers more than just scenic beauty; it provides excellent access to a wealth of nearby attractions and services. Canyon Lake itself is a hub for water sports, including boating, kayaking, jet-skiing, and fishing. The Guadalupe River, famous for tubing and rafting, is also in close proximity. Additionally, charming Hill Country towns like New Braunfels, San Marcos, and Boerne are within a reasonable driving distance, offering dining, shopping, and entertainment options. This blend of natural beauty and convenient access to urban amenities makes Cranes Mill Park an ideal base for exploring the diverse offerings of the Texas Hill Country.

The park's diverse camping options, accommodating both RVs with essential hookups and traditional tent camping (including primitive sites), cater to a wide range of preferences and experience levels. The abundance of shade, a precious commodity in the Texas sun, ensures comfortable outdoor living, while the "very quiet area" promises a peaceful retreat from daily life. For those passionate about water activities, the direct access to Canyon Lake via on-site boat ramps and fishing piers is an unparalleled advantage, allowing for immediate enjoyment of boating, fishing, and swimming.
While the mention of insects is a common reality in natural settings and encourages preparedness (e.g., bug spray), the overall positive attributes, particularly the beautiful views, well-maintained facilities (like shaded picnic tables), and the managed environment of a USACE park, make Cranes Mill Park a strong recommendation for Texans looking to reconnect with nature, enjoy water sports, and create cherished memories in a serene and well-equipped campground right in their home state.

It is very cool place. We spent this weekend there. Nice wheatear nice view. Very nice tables with really big roofs that delivers enough shadow. But I never saw so much ants ants and scorpions on the sites. Looks like park don't use enough deterrents to protect sites. For your understanding during weekend one scorpion bites one of our friend. Another one somehow hides on our stuff and we bring him home. and one more hides in our other friends stuff and they saw him in their garage.
Sep 03, 2024 · Egor ShmakovThere are several shaded spots, it's a very quiet area. They have RV and tent camping appts. Note that your car will not be parked right at your tent site. I would love to come back after the drought when the lake is full again.
Jun 05, 2025 · Amber DoranVery clean place! Nice workers! I observe the attendants cleaning and hosing down the table. For the person who complained about ants and scorpions: This is a natural habitat and you are invading their space. Chemicals are not used in natural habitats!
Nov 15, 2024 · Diane HaignereWe were at Cranes Mill for 2 weeks. The park is very well kept and the hosts are terrific. We had an issue with our levelers on our motorhome and couldn't move even with the help of a tech. We were supposed to move sites and couldn't. The people in charge were so accommodating and worked around us. Fortunately we had a neighbor that knew exactly what to do to manually raise them and get us on our way. We couldn't be more grateful. Thank you again.
Mar 20, 2025 · Lisa JonesVery nice park. Not a lot of rv spots though very nice. It is a shame the lake is so low. Host are very nice and the park is well maintained. Each day we viewed abundant deer everywhere.
