Introduction / Overview
For Mainers and visitors alike, the allure of the Southern Maine Seacoast is undeniable—a stretch of beautiful beaches, iconic lighthouses, and charming coastal towns. Finding a home base that combines the tranquility of the Maine woods with quick access to the shore is key to a perfect summer getaway.
Dixon's Campgrounds
, nestled in Cape Neddick, offers just that experience. Operating since 2001, Dixon's is situated on approximately twenty-six acres, providing a classic Maine camping environment that accommodates a variety of vacation styles, from traditional tent pitching to comfortable RV stays and even yurt rentals. The campground prides itself on offering a true Maine woods experience, with sites spread across four distinct wooded and open areas. This creates a balanced environment where families and groups can enjoy the outdoors, yet remain close enough to the vibrant atmosphere of the coast. For a local user in Maine, Dixon's presents a highly convenient, established option for experiencing the popular York and Ogunquit regions without the expense and crowds of staying directly on the beach. While the physical setting and facilities, particularly the renowned cleanliness of its bathhouses, receive high praise, potential guests should be aware of the campground's strict operational policies, including check-in procedures, speed limits (5 mph, strictly enforced), and the need for careful maneuvering of larger recreational vehicles (RVs) on site.
Location and Accessibility
The campground’s location is one of its most compelling features for Southern Maine tourists. Dixon's is strategically located right on
U.S. Route 1
inCape Neddick, ME 03902
. This prime spot on a major coastal artery means exceptional accessibility to the region’s best attractions.Specifically, Dixon's is situated
just two miles south of Ogunquit Center
andthree miles north of York Beach
. This proximity places campers within a short 5- to 10-minute drive of major attractions. Guests can easily spend the day exploring the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, visiting the iconic Nubble Lighthouse in York, or relaxing on Long Sands and Short Sands Beaches. The convenience allows for quick trips back to the campground, even for a midday swim in the pool or a quick meal.Despite being on Route 1, the campsites are generally nestled into the twenty-six acres of wooded land, providing a degree of separation and quiet from the main road traffic. Access is controlled by an entrance and exit gate, requiring a key card, which helps ensure a secure and private environment for registered guests. However, guests operating larger vehicles, such as 30-foot motorhomes with tows, should note that the office parking and entry gate area can present a challenge for initial check-in and requires careful navigation and possibly a temporary disconnection of towed vehicles before entering the park's internal roads.
Services Offered
Dixon's Campgrounds is equipped with a comprehensive set of services and utilities to ensure a comfortable stay for both tent and RV campers.

Conclusion: Why This Place Is Suitable for Locals
Dixon's Campgrounds is an ideal destination for Mainers looking to take a 'staycation' or enjoy a classic coastal getaway without traveling too far. Its suitability lies in its
prime location for accessing Southern Maine's most beloved beaches and towns
(York and Ogunquit), combined with theessential, family-friendly amenities
that make for a comfortable camping trip. For local users, Dixon's offers the perfect balance: a serene, wooded environment for relaxing at the end of the day, yet the convenience of being just minutes from the vibrant Maine seacoast action, excellent dining, and unique local shops. While the experience is overwhelmingly positive for many, Maine residents familiar with RV travel should heed feedback regarding the strict enforcement of rules, which includes the 5 mph speed limit, and the potential for challenging maneuverability for large rigs due to site sizes and the nature of the entry area. Guests who appreciate a structured, clean, and quiet environment where rules are clearly defined and enforced, and who are willing to navigate the logistical challenges of larger vehicles, will find Dixon's to be a wonderfully located, high-quality, and cost-effective base for exploring the heart of the Southern Maine coastline. It is a genuine, long-standing option for getting out and enjoying the natural beauty that defines a Maine summer.

1st off look at how many reviews I've written. We chose Dixon's because of the price. You get what you pay for. Every other day we got an email from them saying they will take out balance due at 10am on the morning of our check in. Even though check in wasn't until 12 noon. 6 emails in total. When we arrived we pulled into their office parking space. It was barely big enough for our 30 ft motorhome pulling a Jeep. After we went in and checked in at the office, we then had to disconnect the Jeep pull back out onto the road turn around and pull back in to face into their entry gate. Not one email mentioned that. One of the employees guided us to our campsite in his golf court. I was following their 5 mph speed limit in the park and cannot keep up with him. He then was guiding me back into the site and I stopped and he said then I'll keep going and I said no. Explain them I didn't want to hit the branches up at the top of the wreck. He said don't worry about those they're very soft branches. I said I am worried about them and I'm not backing up the rig into the ranches. He said well then you can do whatever you want I said well then let me move to this other site and camp there is what you can't do that. I said also I can't do what I want. I said well then I'm leaving the motorhome where it is, and I hope the people next to us can get into their spot. He said oh you have people drive over that rock without any issue all the time. I said yeah I can see the scratch marks in the rock from people dragging the bottoms of their campers across them. He said oh well that's just part of the details. Nothing to worry about. Terrible customer service. We will never be staying here again.
Sep 24, 2025 · Relax RV Podcast (Relaxrn)Our experience here was wonderful. The staff were very nice and helpful. Our campsite was a little small but plenty of room for 2 small tents and our van. We had one of the better campsites that wasn't as close to others. However, all the guests here were quiet, nice, respectful, calm, making for a perfect stay. Most guests seemed to be nice families. They have entrance and exit gates, and a key card is required to enter. The bathroom facilities were the best I've ever seen/used. They seem to be new and were very well maintained. The campground is a short 5 or 10-minute drive to the beaches, so it is just far enough away to be scenic and close enough to have a fun vacation. I highly recommend Dixon's!
Aug 20, 2025 · Jennifer BGreat campground. We tent here a couple nights each summer and love it. Good bathrooms and showers available and a well run and clean grounds. Pool is a good option but we normally head to ogunquit for the day. Gated entry and extremely nice and helpful staff
Jul 30, 2025 · Sarah MThis was my great Grandmother's campground. Haven't been in years but glad to see that from the reviews the new owners are keeping it kept up and just like grandma Dixon had it.
Aug 20, 2025 · Justin “Justin the XXII” SmithNice, quiet spot for a weekend camping trip. The grounds were clean, the sites were well maintained, and it felt peaceful without being too far from everything. A solid choice if you’re looking for a low-key place to relax outdoors.
