Doll Mountain Campground About
For those of us in Georgia looking to unplug, unwind, and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the North Georgia mountains, Doll Mountain Campground on Carters Lake offers an exceptional experience. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), this campground is a true gem, celebrated by locals for its peaceful atmosphere, pristine facilities, and breathtaking views of one of Georgia's most beautiful lakes. If a tranquil escape, complete with the soothing sounds of nature and easy access to water adventures, sounds like your ideal getaway, then Doll Mountain Campground is a destination you'll want to explore.
Doll Mountain Campground is a highly-rated camping destination nestled on the southern side of the expansive and undeveloped Carters Lake, approximately three miles off Highway 382. This heavily wooded campground offers a diverse array of sites, catering to both RV enthusiasts and tent campers. With 65 campsites in total, including 39 with electric and water hookups, and 26 designated tent-only sites, it provides options for various camping styles. Additionally, there is a group camping area available for larger gatherings.
What consistently stands out in visitor reviews is the immaculate condition of the campground and its facilities. Campers frequently praise the cleanliness of the comfort stations, which boast impressive hot showers, a rarity in many campgrounds. The atmosphere at Doll Mountain is predominantly quiet and serene, making it an ideal spot for those seeking relaxation and a break from the hustle and bustle. While some sites offer a "glorified parking spot" feel, others provide spectacular lake views and more secluded settings, especially those nestled in the loops with wooden decks. The friendly and helpful staff are often highlighted as a significant positive, contributing to a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all visitors. This campground operates seasonally, typically from mid-April through late October, welcoming campers to enjoy the best of Georgia's spring, summer, and fall seasons.
Doll Mountain Campground is situated at 1362 Doll Mountain Rd, Ellijay, GA 30540, USA. Its location places it firmly within the beautiful North Georgia Mountains, offering easy access to the clear waters of Carters Lake. While it provides a feeling of secluded wilderness, it's conveniently located about 20 miles from Ellijay, a charming North Georgia town known for its apple orchards and local shops, and approximately 70 miles north of Atlanta, making it a manageable drive for many Georgians.
To reach Doll Mountain Campground from Atlanta, travelers typically take I-75 North to Exit 293. From there, you'll follow Highway 411 North to Highway 136. Turn right onto Highway 136 and continue until you reach Highway 382. Turn left onto Highway 382, and you'll then look for signs to the campground; the access road is directly across from the volunteer fire station.
It's important to note that the roads leading into and within the campground, while paved, can be steep and winding due to the mountainous terrain. Reviewers mention that the drive in can be "a little steep, but definitely worth it." This may require careful navigation for larger RVs, though many report successful journeys with rigs up to 40 feet. The relatively close proximity to Ellijay means that campers can easily run into town for groceries, supplies, or to explore local attractions if needed, striking a good balance between natural immersion and convenience.

Customer Reviews
The campground itself is immaculate but my site in particular (site 2) felt like a glorified parking spot. The site was literally beside the road, lines and all. The part my side door faced was a view of the side of the mountain sloping into the lake but I couldn't see the lake for the trees and there was no rails of any kind or anything to keep my kids and toddler safe from falling down the hill to the lake so we mostly stayed inside. The kids park isn't much but I was thankful there was a park. The showers are amazing, I cannot stress that enough. The staff is beyond friendly and helpful, they were everything I could have hoped for and more. It felt like the campground was more of a place for older people to relax and sit around in nature which is fine but if you have children and want to do things with them then it's not really the place. Nowhere for a child to ride a bike safely near your RV. There's no place to do laundry on site so if you don't have a washer and dryer in your rv you have a pretty good drive to get to a laundromat. I drove down to the boat dock to get a picture of the beautiful lake. As far as sound, it is as quiet as can be all the time. It is a very serene environment. My advice would be to pick a spot down in the loop with the wooden decks. We drove around the campground to look at the other sites and there are some that are really nice view wise and more practical for little ones in regards to saftey. If I were to go again, that's where I'd pick.
Site 38, this was our emergency backup campgrounds but it was not a let down. Awesome location, decent bathrooms and lovely hosts. Shout to John for giving us a warm welcome and helping us feel safe!
It's a great place for a quiet getaway. There's a small playground for the kids, but that's it. It's mostly just a place for relaxation.
We stayed at the only tent site with a power hookup (site 45), and it was great. The sites are each private, and our site overlooked the lake. The view is blocked a lot by the trees, but it's not bad. It was mostly quiet. People played their music at their sites, but it wasn't very disruptive, and we had no issues with noise during quiet hours. The bathrooms and showers were clean and well-maintained. The check-in and check-out was easy. I'd definitely visit again.
The campsites were clean and decently maintained. We were at site 38 near the bathrooms. It was very convenient but because people are literally the worst, we probably wouldn’t stay here again. Clearly respecting quiet hours isn’t a thing and nightly between 11pm-1am people would come to the bathrooms and charge their phones or wash their dishes. Literally at 11:30pm a family came and washed their dishes at the bathrooms, screaming and banging pans. Absolutely Insane. There needs to be better outlines of quiet time and camping etiquette here that is communicated from the campground host. I saw other reviews talking of no enforcement of quiet time. Hopefully someone sees these and actually does something. Super disappointing. Beyond that there’s very minimal lake access due to steep slopes which was disappointing but that’s on us for not doing research. Other sites are quieter but it’s a drive to a bathroom. So If you are looking to just camp with a drive to a bathroom or lake access this place is perfect.
