Dover AFB Famcamp About
For military personnel, active-duty, reservists, retirees, and authorized Department of Defense (DoD) civilians, finding a convenient, comfortable, and affordable place to stay, especially when traveling or stationed in a new area, is always a priority. The Dover AFB Famcamp, nestled on the edge of the Dover Air Force Base airfield in Dover, Delaware, offers precisely that. It’s a dedicated RV campsite designed to serve the unique needs of the military community, providing a peaceful retreat with practical amenities and excellent access to base facilities and local attractions.
The concept of a "Famcamp" is a well-regarded benefit within the military community, offering a secure and often cost-effective alternative to civilian campgrounds or hotels. Dover AFB Famcamp embodies this principle, providing a "quaint little RV campsite" that prioritizes comfort and convenience. While it might be described as "no frills" by some, this often translates to a straightforward, efficient, and well-maintained experience that focuses on the essentials of a great RV stay.
Guest reviews consistently praise the Famcamp for its quiet atmosphere and spacious sites, a welcome relief for those seeking tranquility. One reviewer highlighted, "What’s not to like?! Quiet, spacious, washers, bathrooms clean, near to base shopping, playground across the street for the kids and great walking path and open fields to walk your dog. Sure there may not be a pool or a very large laundry room - but for the price and peace of quiet we enjoyed we will definitely come back in the near future." This sentiment perfectly captures the value proposition of Dover AFB Famcamp: a peaceful, well-located, and budget-friendly option for those with base access.
For eligible individuals located in or traveling to Delaware, especially those connected to Dover Air Force Base, understanding the offerings of the Famcamp is essential. This article will provide a comprehensive look at its strategic location, the services and features available, and why it remains a top choice for military families and personnel seeking a comfortable stay in central Delaware.
Dover AFB Famcamp is strategically located on Las Vegas St, within the perimeter of Dover Air Force Base, in Dover, DE 19902, USA. This unique positioning on a military installation is both a defining feature and a key aspect of its accessibility and suitability for its authorized users.
The primary consideration for accessing Dover AFB Famcamp is, of course, base access. The campground is exclusively for authorized users, including active duty, National Guard, Reservists, retired military, 0-100% DAV, Purple Heart recipients, Former POW, Veteran Caregivers, and DoD civilians. Sponsored guests may also be able to stay under certain conditions and with the sponsor present for check-in. This controlled access ensures a secure and dedicated environment for military families and personnel.
Once on base, the Famcamp is conveniently situated on the edge of the airfield, offering a unique opportunity to observe military aircraft like C5s and C17s performing touch-and-go landings, which many guests find fascinating despite the occasional noise. Its location within the base grants immediate access to a wide array of base amenities, including the Commissary, Exchange (BX), gas stations, and various recreational facilities. This means guests have convenient access to groceries, supplies, and services without having to leave the secure base environment.
Beyond the base, the Famcamp’s proximity to Dover, the state capital of Delaware, provides easy access to off-base attractions. Residents can quickly reach the Dover Motor Speedway for NASCAR events, Bally's Dover Casino Resort for entertainment, and the Air Mobility Command Museum, which is often cited as being right next to the campground. Downtown Dover, with its historical sites, dining, and shopping, is also a short drive away.
Furthermore, while located centrally, Dover AFB is only about 45 minutes from the popular Delaware beaches, including Rehoboth and Dewey Beaches, making day trips to the coast a feasible and enjoyable option for campers looking to explore the wider region. The convenience of being able to "quickly run back and forth" to various activities, as noted by a guest, underscores the strategic and accessible nature of this location for its intended users.

Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite its proximity to the airfield, the campground is consistently reviewed as "quiet and peaceful," offering a serene escape for relaxation.

Eagles' Nest Park Across the Street: Directly across the street from the Famcamp is Eagles' Nest Park, a "huge playground" equipped with multiple play areas for children aged 2-12, pavilions, horseshoe pits, and volleyball nets, offering excellent recreational opportunities for families.
Walking Paths and Open Fields: The surrounding area provides ample "great walking path and open fields" for strolling, jogging, or walking dogs, promoting outdoor activity.

Close to Delaware Beaches: While inland, the Famcamp is only about 45 minutes from the highly-rated Rehoboth and Dewey Beaches, making coastal day trips easily achievable.
Dover AFB Famcamp, as a military Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) facility, structures its pricing to be inherently advantageous for its eligible users rather than running transient "promotions" in the commercial sense. The value is embedded in the low daily rates for its full-hookup RV sites and dry camping options, which are significantly more affordable than comparable civilian campgrounds.
Key "offers" or beneficial pricing structures include:
Tiered Daily Rates: Pricing is set at a highly competitive daily rate (e.g., $20 - $30 for gravel full-hookup sites, $12 for dry/tent sites), with potential lower rates if utilities are shared with a neighbor (with permission) or for specific user categories.
Military/DoD Eligibility Benefits: The entire Famcamp operation is a benefit for the military community, meaning the competitive pricing itself is a form of ongoing "special offer" available exclusively to authorized personnel and their sponsored guests.
Seasonal Stay Limits: While not a promotion, the Famcamp implements maximum stay limits (e.g., 14 days during May-September, 30 days during October-April, with a cumulative maximum of 120 days per calendar year). This policy helps ensure availability for more authorized users throughout the year.
Access to MWR Programs: Guests at the Famcamp gain full access to the extensive MWR programs and facilities on Dover AFB, including shopping at the Commissary and Exchange, recreational facilities, and potentially discounted tickets for local attractions through the Information, Tickets & Travel (ITT) office. These are valuable added benefits that enhance the overall experience without additional direct costs for campground services.

Customer Reviews
Quaint little RV campsite on the edge of Dover & Dover AFB airfield. We traveled to the ends of the rainbow to get here (see photo). Very efficient, no frills area. Picnic table, grill, water electric & dump station provided. There is no wind block during storms & windy days. There is 1 washer ($1.50) & 1 dryer ($.25 for 5 min.) for 10 sites. There is 1 male & 1 female bathroom in the bathhouse, with 2 stalls, 1 locking shower & 2 sinks in each bathroom. No, benches or trash cans in the bathrooms. Showers, clean & nice. There is a huge playground across the street & plenty of entertainment nearby. The street between the site & the playground has a 25 mph speed limit. It is very common to see vehicles travel 40 - 50 mph (just eyeball calculation, not official speed).
What’s not to like?! Quiet, spacious, washers, bathrooms clean, near to base shopping, playground across the street for the kids and great walking path and open fields to walk your dog. Sure there may not be a pool or a very large laundry room - but for the price and peace of quiet we enjoyed we will definitely come back in the near future.
Two night stay. Price was right. Our site was a mix of grass and gravel. Picnic table and elevated charcoal grill. T-Mobile had 4 bars, no wifi. A small bath house (you need an access code for the bath house but not for the laundry. Bath house was small and dirty - there was a hand written note on the door that basically said the Base/MWR did not provide cleaning staff for the bath house and it was incumbent upon guest to clean after themselves. Fair enough, but there were no cleaning supplies anywhere. Not sure who serviced the bath house with toilet paper. No soap dispensers or air dryers/towels. The camp site is located very near a runway so if you are a light sleeper, this might not be the right camp site for you.
Although you must have access to Dover AFB to get to Famcamp, it is quiet and comfortable.... Didn't have any children with me, but there is a small children's park adjacent also! The Air Mobility Command Museum is nearby and we'll worth visiting!
Nice inexpensive place to camp on Dover AFB, located on the South end of the runway. The tent sites have little shade and no power, but a nice pagoda. The bathroom and showers were clean and only a short walk away. Cool place to plane watch when camping. Not so cool when they land at 0300 in the morning.
