Introduction / Overview
For Pennsylvania residents looking to truly unplug and embrace a traditional outdoor experience, French Creek State Park’s Loop D Campground offers an ideal setting. Located within the expansive 7,730-acre state park—a critical forested oasis in the Schuylkill Highlands—Loop D is specifically designated for rustic, non-electric camping. This loop caters to tent campers and those who prefer a simpler, more traditional style of getting away, making it a favorite for many local users seeking quiet reflection beneath the stars.
French Creek State Park is renowned for being the largest block of contiguous forest between Washington D.C. and New York City, providing an essential natural backdrop for your adventure. The park itself is a hub for outdoor recreation, featuring two serene lakes, Hopewell and Scotts Run, and nearly 40 miles of trails. Loop D provides a convenient base from which to explore all of these natural treasures. While the campground is situated close to all park activities, Loop D is unique in its deliberate lack of electric hook-ups, reinforcing its focus on a back-to-nature experience. It is important for potential visitors to note that Loop D is designated as a non-pet camping section, ensuring a specific, consistent environment for all guests.
The campground operates from early spring through the first weekend in January, ensuring that this local gem is available for three seasons of outdoor exploration. Whether you're a hiker, mountain biker, or simply someone who appreciates a quiet evening by the campfire, Loop D offers a necessary retreat from the high-tech world, allowing you to focus on the beauty of Pennsylvania's diverse second-growth forest.

French Creek State Park’s Loop D is perfectly suited for the local Pennsylvanian seeking an authentic, back-to-basics camping adventure. Its primary advantage is its deliberate focus on non-electric, rustic camping, which attracts enthusiasts who value a quieter, darker environment—ideal for stargazing or simply enjoying a peaceful night's rest away from the constant hum of generators and bright lights.
While some visitors have noted the general challenge of campsite spacing and occasional noise, the park staff diligently enforces the campground's quiet hours (9:00 PM to 8:00 AM) to preserve the peaceful atmosphere, and a quick call to the park office or a ranger can address any issues. The pet-free status of Loop D offers a dedicated sanctuary for those with allergies or who prefer a focused environment for their nature observation.
Ultimately, Loop D is a fantastic, accessible gateway to nearly 8,000 acres of prime Pennsylvania wilderness. It combines the necessity of modern, clean facilities (showers, flush toilets) with the desire for a truly rustic campsite experience. For the local user, it offers the chance to reconnect with nature, tackle challenging trails, and enjoy the beautiful Hopewell Big Woods without a long-distance road trip, making it a cherished, nearby location for a genuine PA outdoor escape.
If you are coming to enjoy peace in nature don’t come here. Sites are close together and loud. My friend had his gear stolen while we were hiking. The people at the site across from us have a spotlight which points toward our site. They partied until the rangers shut them down then finally turned the spotlight off around 11:30. So much for enjoying the stars.
