Gabeshiwin Tipis & Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s an experience designed to evoke a sense of peace and connection to the land. The name "Gabeshiwin" itself is an Ojibwe word often associated with a camp or dwelling place, hinting at the authentic and respectful approach to outdoor living found here. It's a place where you can step away from the noise of everyday life and immerse yourself in a quiet, country setting that feels both well-kept and secluded. Guests consistently praise the friendly and helpful owners, who truly make a difference in the overall experience. Whether you're a seasoned camper looking for a fresh perspective or simply seeking a beautiful and unique retreat, Gabeshiwin Tipis & Campground offers a memorable escape in the heart of Minnesota.
Gabeshiwin Tipis & Campground is located at 13970 Emma Rd, Hinckley, MN 55037, USA. This address places it in central Minnesota, offering a convenient and accessible escape for many residents across the state. Hinckley is a well-known town, primarily due to its proximity to Grand Casino Hinckley and its position along Interstate 35, a major artery connecting the Twin Cities to Duluth and the North Shore.
For Minnesotans traveling from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, Hinckley is typically an easy drive, often just over an hour north, making it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway without extensive travel. Its direct access from I-35 means visitors can reach the campground smoothly, even with trailers or larger vehicles. While the campground offers a "country feeling," its location near Hinckley ensures that essential services and amenities are not far away. The town provides gas stations, convenience stores, and dining options. Although some visitors have noted that transportation options within Hinckley can be limited during large events, this primarily affects those relying on public transport or specific event shuttles rather than campers arriving by personal vehicle. The area around Hinckley also boasts a variety of natural attractions, including state parks and trails, enhancing the appeal of Gabeshiwin as a basecamp for exploring central Minnesota's diverse outdoor offerings.
Gabeshiwin Tipis & Campground focuses on providing a unique and rustic camping experience, with services designed to ensure comfort and convenience while maintaining a natural, country feel.
-
Tipi Campsites:
The standout service is the provision of authentic tipi campsites. These tipis are erected on sturdy wooden platforms, offering a unique and elevated sleeping experience. They are equipped with tables and fire rings, with attached critter guards/mosquito nets to enhance comfort and reduce unwanted insects. Some tipis also include cots, allowing campers to simply bring sleeping bags. These are cart-in sites, approximately 400 feet from the parking lot, with transport assistance available if needed.
-
Traditional Campsites:
While the tipis are a highlight, the campground also likely offers traditional tent campsites for those who prefer to bring their own gear. These sites are designed to provide a quiet and well-kept space for a more conventional camping experience.
-
Free Firewood:
A highly appreciated amenity, firewood is provided free of charge to campers, eliminating the need to purchase or bring your own. This adds to the convenience and value of a stay.
-
Potable Water Access:
Potable water is available via a hand pump, ensuring campers have access to fresh drinking water on-site.
-
Porta Potties (Clean Toilets):
Well-maintained porta potties are located conveniently nearby the campsites, providing essential restroom facilities. Guests have consistently noted their cleanliness.
-
Friendly and Helpful Owners/Staff:
Numerous reviews highlight the exceptional friendliness and helpfulness of the owners and staff. This personalized service significantly enhances the guest experience and contributes to the welcoming atmosphere.
It's important for campers to note that, given the rustic nature of the tipi and traditional campsites, amenities like showers or full electrical hookups are not explicitly mentioned as standard features directly at each site. Campers should be prepared for a more unplugged experience, bringing portable chargers or power banks for personal devices if needed.
Gabeshiwin Tipis & Campground offers several distinctive features and highlights that set it apart and make it a highly appealing choice for campers in Minnesota seeking a unique and memorable outdoor experience.
-
Authentic Tipi Camping Experience:
The most prominent highlight is the opportunity to stay in authentic tipis. These aren't just tents; they are erected on wooden platforms and thoughtfully equipped with mosquito nets and fire rings. This provides a truly immersive and culturally rich camping adventure, allowing guests to experience a piece of history and indigenous living in a comfortable setting. The experience is both novel and deeply satisfying.
-
Peaceful and Secluded Country Setting:
Despite its accessibility, the campground offers a genuine "country feeling" and is consistently described as very quiet and well-kept. This provides an ideal escape from urban noise and light pollution, perfect for relaxation, stargazing, and enjoying the sounds of nature. The deliberate design of the sites, often around a scenic pond, enhances this serene atmosphere.
-
Exceptional Owner/Staff Friendliness:
A recurring theme in reviews is the outstanding friendliness and helpfulness of the owner, Phil, and the staff. This personalized and welcoming approach significantly enhances the camping experience, making guests feel valued and cared for, contributing to a desire for repeat visits.
-
Free Firewood Provided:
This is a practical and much-appreciated amenity. Having free firewood available at each site means campers don't need to worry about sourcing, purchasing, or transporting wood, simplifying their camping setup and maximizing relaxation time around the campfire.
-
Clean and Well-Maintained Facilities:
Despite the rustic nature, facilities like the porta potties are noted for their cleanliness. This attention to essential details ensures a comfortable and pleasant stay, even without modern restroom complexes.
-
Proximity to Diverse Outdoor Activities:
Within 15 miles of the campground, visitors can find a range of outdoor activities including rock climbing, paved bike trails, and multiple lakes/rivers/waterfalls for fishing, floating, swimming, and hiking. This makes Gabeshiwin a great basecamp for exploring the natural wonders of central Minnesota.
As a unique, family-owned campground with a specialized offering like tipi camping, Gabeshiwin Tipis & Campground may not always advertise promotions or special offers in the traditional, widespread sense like larger corporate chains. Their value proposition often lies in the unique experience and personalized service they provide.
However, it's always recommended for prospective campers to directly inquire about any potential deals or ongoing offers when making reservations. While not guaranteed, possibilities could include:
-
Off-Peak Season Rates:
Like many campgrounds in Minnesota, Gabeshiwin might offer slightly reduced rates or more flexible booking options during shoulder seasons (late spring, early fall) when demand is lower.
-
Extended Stay Discounts:
For those looking for a longer retreat, there might be discounted rates for booking multiple consecutive nights, such as a weekly rate.
-
Group Booking Incentives:
If you're planning a trip with a larger group (e.g., multiple tipis or campsites), it's worth asking if any group discounts are available.
-
Return Customer Appreciation:
Given the strong positive feedback about the owners and the high rate of returning campers, they might have informal appreciation for repeat visitors, though this would be at their discretion.

Customer Reviews
We enjoyed our night stay and the owner was super nice and helpful. Very quiet and country feeling and well kept. I’ll come back to camp. The campground itself was great! Only complaint regarding the town of Hinckley itself, is they can do better with transportation options during the weekends with big events. We attended Snoop Dogg and everything in the area was sold out. One would think they would plan better and plan for these types of weekends.
I absolutely love what they have done, so awesomely, Beautiful place. Thank you so much 😊
I had a really great time staying in the tipi village! I highly recommend it for anyone traveling to the Hinckley area. I'm excited to come back!
