Services Offered

Goose Lake State Forest Campground offers essential services tailored to a rustic camping experience, focusing on fundamental needs while maintaining the natural environment.

  • Rustic Campsites: The campground provides campsites suitable for enjoying nature. While specific details on site count (often around 30-50 sites for state forest campgrounds) or types of trailers are not detailed in reviews, the "rustic" nature indicates no direct hookups for water or electricity at individual sites. Sites are described as having "maintained dirt through roads" and "insulated fire rings," suggesting a foundational setup for comfortable camping.

  • Vault Toilets: As a rustic campground, "vault toilets" (outhouses) are provided. Notably, reviews commend them for being "a lot cleaner than other state forest campgrounds I've been too" and "kept clean and tidy," which is a significant positive for this type of facility.

  • Pump Water: Potable water is available via a "pump water" system, typically a hand pump, which is standard for state forest campgrounds without pressurized running water at sites.

  • Garbage Disposal: "Garbage dumpsters are regularly tended," ensuring proper waste management and contributing to the overall cleanliness of the campground.

  • Boat Launch: The campground is located directly on Goose Lake and features a "boat launch right in the campground," providing convenient access for fishing and paddling activities.

  • DNR Presence: "The DNR are in regularly throughout the week," indicating active monitoring and management of the campground, which helps maintain order and cleanliness.

Features / Highlights

Goose Lake State Forest Campground is cherished for its distinctive features that enhance the rustic outdoor experience for its visitors.

  • Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Consistently described as "quiet" and a place where campers "enjoy nature," it's ideal for those seeking a tranquil escape from urban noise.

  • Clean Facilities (for rustic): The cleanliness of the "vault toilets" is a notable highlight, surprising many who are accustomed to less maintained facilities at other rustic state campgrounds.

  • Goose Lake Access: Situated directly on Goose Lake, the campground provides easy access for water-based recreation. The lake is described as suitable for "fish, kayak" and generally enjoying the water.

  • Good Fishing Opportunities: Reviews indicate Goose Lake offers "fish" and the DNR states "Pike, bass and panfish are caught in Goose Lake." This makes it an appealing spot for anglers, with the reminder to "have your current fishing license on you."

  • ORV Friendly: While not explicitly stated as having direct ORV trails from every site, the campground is often considered "ORV friendly" due to its proximity to state forest trails. Many state forest campgrounds like Goose Lake offer excellent trail riding opportunities nearby, making it a suitable base for off-road enthusiasts.

  • Spacious and Well-Kept Sites: "Sites were spacious and well kept," providing campers with ample room and a pleasant environment for their stay.

  • Natural Beauty: The overall setting is focused on enjoying "nature," with the campground nestled within Michigan's state forest, offering opportunities to explore the surrounding woods and waters.

One review mentions occasional "inconsiderate few have wanted to loudly party throughout the whole night into morning. Leaving their broken bottles, tops, and trash scattered on the sites." While this points to isolated incidents, it’s a good reminder for all campers to adhere to campground rules and etiquette to preserve the peaceful environment for everyone.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a State Forest Campground managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Goose Lake State Forest Campground typically operates under a standard fee structure rather than offering frequent, special promotions common at private campgrounds. However, Michigan residents can benefit from the general value offered by the DNR and related programs:

  • Michigan Recreation Passport: This annual pass is required for vehicle entry into Michigan state parks and recreation areas, which often include state forest campgrounds. Purchasing a Recreation Passport offers significant savings for frequent visitors to any of Michigan's state-managed outdoor properties throughout the year.

  • Affordable Rates: State forest campgrounds are generally known for their affordable nightly rates, providing excellent value for a rustic camping experience compared to full-service private campgrounds.

  • First-Come, First-Served: Many state forest campgrounds, including Goose Lake, operate on a "first-come, first-served" basis for campsites (some DNR sites mention no reservations), meaning there isn't a complex booking system with fluctuating prices. This also means popular times can fill up quickly.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on camping fees, availability, and specific guidelines, it is highly recommended to consult the official Michigan DNR website for Goose Lake State Forest Campground or contact the managing DNR unit directly.

My family tries camping there at least once a year. The bathrooms are a lot cleaner than other state forest campgrounds I've been too. It's fairly close to Lake City, but far enough that it's quiet when you need it to be.

It's rustic with maintained dirt through roads, insulated fire rings, vault toilets and pump water. Garbage dumpsters are regularly tended. Most campers are there to enjoy nature. Fish, kayak, have friends and family time. Making memories and returning for the tradition. Unfortunately, in the last couple of years, some rather inconsiderate few have wanted to loudly party throughout the whole night into morning. Leaving their broken bottles, tops, and trash scattered on the sites. The DNR are in regularly throughout the week. Nice folks. Oh yes, and have your current fishing license on you if you are fishing. ;) :)

Really nice visuals, close enough to drive to grab bite, but just far enough out to let you enjoy a nice sunset. Campground is a tad small for bigger RVs, water is available via hand pump only. Heads-up: vault toilets only, and no electric.

Nice campsites. Clean toilets, water pumps every 100yds or so. Nice boat launch with parking for about 6 cars with trailers. Water is a few feet low do to no snow melt off this yr so deer flys are a bit of a problem so take spray or peppermint. Fished for bass, caught 3 in the 15 to 16 inch range and lost one that had to be 4 or 5 lbs. Caught 4 pike all to small, (hanner handles) $20. Per night. If in that area I would stay again.😊
