Introduction / Overview
Green Gate Camping Area & Hall, affectionately known by locals simply as The Green Gate, offers a welcoming and established camping experience in the heart of Exeter, NH. Operating since the mid-1960s, this long-standing family campground and Good Sam Park has cultivated a reputation for being a quiet, safe haven, particularly appealing to seasonal campers from the New Hampshire region. Its charm lies in its commitment to community, with many guests describing the atmosphere as having "friendly people" and highlighting the accommodating nature of the owners.
The experience at The Green Gate is defined by its serene environment, nestled on the banks of the Exeter River and surrounded by a vast, beautiful pine forest. This commitment to a natural, shaded setting provides a relaxing retreat from the intensity of coastal life while maintaining unparalleled convenience to major Seacoast attractions. The campground caters significantly to seasonal campers, fostering a stable and consistent community atmosphere where residents can truly "pull up a camp fire" and relax for the entire season. While it operates under a clear, comprehensive list of policies and rules, these are widely considered "nothing to unreasonable" and are implemented to ensure the safety, quietude, and enjoyment of all guests in this cherished local establishment.
Location and Accessibility
Green Gate Camping Area & Hall is strategically located at 185 Court St, Exeter, NH 03833, USA, giving New Hampshire locals superb access to the region’s best destinations. Its setting on the southern edge of the charming, historic town of Exeter provides easy entry to local eateries, unique shops, and historical sites, all just a short distance away. This convenience means guests can easily enjoy the cultural amenities of a classic New England town without ever feeling isolated.
Perhaps the greatest draw is the campground’s ideal proximity to the coast and other major hubs. It is only a quick 10-to-15-minute drive to the popular shores of Hampton Beach, perfect for spontaneous beach days. Furthermore, the campground is approximately 30 minutes from the historic and bustling city of Portsmouth, as well as a short drive to the attractions in Maine. This central, yet secluded, location makes The Green Gate an excellent and logistically sound base camp for exploring the full spectrum of the New Hampshire and Southern Maine Seacoast. The property itself is surrounded by forested terrain, providing a natural buffer and contributing to the "safe and quiet" atmosphere that guests repeatedly appreciate.

Green Gate Camping Area & Hall is an outstanding choice for New Hampshire locals who are looking for a permanent seasonal retreat or a quiet family getaway with an unbeatable location. Its suitability stems from its long-standing, family-friendly atmosphere, where the community is predominantly seasonal and genuinely friendly. The park’s commitment to cleanliness, especially in its newly renovated bathroom facilities, and the provision of desirable amenities like the swimming pool and various recreational activities, ensure a high quality of life throughout the season. Critically, the convenience of being just minutes from Hampton Beach and the charming town of Exeter means locals get the best of both worlds: a peaceful, shaded sanctuary under the pines, and rapid access to the dynamic NH Seacoast. While guests should be prepared for the natural characteristic of pine pitch and the need to follow a robust set of community policies, Green Gate offers excellent value and a trusted, quiet environment, making it a highly recommended home-away-from-home for New Hampshire families.

Love it here, close to Hampton Beach, Maine and it's safe and quiet. Get your seasonal here and pull up a camp fire.
Sep 20, 2025 · Joe KennedyThis Campground is mostly seasonal campers, most were very friendly. The owners were also very friendly, there is a long list of policies and rules, nothing to unreasonable. It's close to Portsmouth and Hampton Beach. The only issue was all sites are under mostly pine trees which are very beautiful, until we realized the Pine trees were dripping pine pitch all over the camper and our vehicle. It also got all over our shoes. We went to the store and got some Goo Gone which did clean most of it up, we then covered what we could with table cloths and extra coverings we had in the camper. It was a bit disappointing. The site looks like it had not been raked or cleaned in some time. I'm giving 3 stars because it wasn't the best experience but everyone was nice , it was a quiet place, and close to attractions.
Sep 13, 2023 · RitaStayed there 1 night while traveling home. Only place I could get a reservation. As per the sign, it opened in 1964 - don't think they've done much upgrading since then. Bathrooms were old & very outdated. Had to pay for showers. OK but at least have a coin machine that doesn't take forever to figure out. Sink faucet was loose, was afraid pipe would break & could only wash one hand at a time, other had to hold the faucet down to get water. 3 toilet stalls, 1 had no lock. 2nd had a hook that was too short - couldn't latch door, 3rd had a hook that was too long - couldn't latch door!! I figured about $2.00 in hardware would have fixed all 3 doors!! Way too many rules - hubby & I BOTH had to sign 2 pages of rules & regs - what about the owners taking responsibility on having decent restroom facilities!!
Aug 04, 2023 · Peg PaaschI spent a week here. Staff and common places were nice and clean. Our camping site was even and spacious. It's better during the week, you may have rude neighbors making a lot of noise during busy days (weekend). Train racks are close, so if you are a light-sleeper (like me) it will wake you up three times during the nigh time. It's not really the campsite's fault.
Aug 22, 2017 · A GWe have never been to Exeter before and were very impressed with the town. It was fun going into the shops, restaurants and bakeries. We were also close to several historical buildings. The campground was a short drive or bike ride to all this and it was clean. That is always my favorite part. The clean bathrooms always make the stay more enjoyable. We had a large site and it was a peaceful place to stay. The owners could not have been nicer or more accommodating. I'm hoping we are able to get back there very soon.
