Hawks Nest About

For those of us Texans who embrace the spirit of traditional camping and seek a functional, group-friendly outdoor experience, Hawks Nest Campground in Graford offers a unique setting. Situated within the expansive and activity-rich environment of what appears to be a larger camp facility near Possum Kingdom Lake, Hawks Nest provides a solid base for outdoor adventures, particularly for organized groups like youth camps or family gatherings. While it may not offer direct lake views or immediate water access from every site, its strength lies in its practical amenities and proximity to a wide array of activities that make a camping trip memorable.

Visitor reviews highlight its well-maintained basic facilities, including clean latrines and "nice" restrooms and showers within reasonable walking distance. The presence of a pavilion at the site suggests it's well-suited for group activities and communal meals. It's important to note that while some sites may be nestled among trees, blocking lake views, the overall camp environment, particularly at Camp Constantin, is geared towards a robust outdoor program with no shortage of activities on the waterfront. This means Hawks Nest is an excellent choice for those prioritizing function and access to a broader outdoor experience over direct scenic overlooks from their individual site.

Location and Accessibility

Hawks Nest Campground is located in Graford, TX 76449, USA. Graford is a small community situated in Palo Pinto County, recognized primarily for its close proximity to the magnificent Possum Kingdom Lake. This lake is a crown jewel of Texas, famous for its striking cliff formations, crystal-clear waters, and a plethora of water-based recreational opportunities.

To reach Graford from major Texas urban centers like the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, travelers typically take I-20 West, then transition to state highways such as TX-16 or other connecting local roads that lead directly into the Graford area and the vicinity of Possum Kingdom Lake. The drive from the western side of the DFW area usually ranges from 1.5 to 2 hours, making it a convenient distance for weekend trips or longer vacations without excessive travel time. Given that Hawks Nest is part of a larger camp (likely Camp Constantin, a Boy Scouts of America camp), its exact location within the 76449 zip code would be within the camp's expansive grounds. This implies that while the immediate campsite might be treed, the overall camp provides organized access to various program areas and waterfront activities. Accessibility within the camp itself might involve some walking, as noted by reviewers mentioning "a long way from the dining hall and the program areas" for some sites. This indicates a sprawling natural setting, typical of large outdoor camps, where different activity zones are spread out. This design offers a sense of immersion in nature and minimizes congestion, even if it requires a bit more movement to get around.

Services Offered

Hawks Nest Campground, being part of a larger camp system, likely offers a range of services designed to support group camping and outdoor activities. Based on the reviews, we can infer several key provisions:

  • Dedicated Campsites: The campground provides specific areas for setting up camp, likely suitable for tents and possibly smaller RVs or pop-ups, with a focus on group accommodation.
  • Site Pavilion: A significant amenity is the presence of a pavilion at the campsite, ideal for communal gatherings, shaded resting, and meal preparation for groups. While one review notes it's "a little on the small side," its existence is a major plus for group functionality.
  • Basic Sanitation Facilities:
    • Latrines: There's a mention of a "short walk to get to the latrine," indicating basic, functional toilet facilities are available nearby.
    • Restrooms and Showers: "Nice" restrooms and showers are noted to be "not too far of a walk away," suggesting more developed, comfortable facilities are accessible within the larger camp area.
  • Camp Access to Water Activities: While individual sites might not have direct water access, the reviews confirm "no shortage of activities on the waterfront during open time," implying that the broader camp provides structured access to Possum Kingdom Lake for fishing, boating, and other aquatic programs.
  • Camp Staff Support: The mention of "Camp Constantin, and the staff this summer, were superb" suggests that guests at Hawks Nest benefit from the professional support and organization of the larger camp's personnel.
  • Program Areas Access: Although potentially a "long way" for some, access to dining halls and various program areas (likely including activity zones for shooting sports, archery, or other outdoor skills) is an inherent part of the experience within the larger camp environment.

Features / Highlights

Hawks Nest Campground, especially when considered within its larger camp context, boasts several key features and highlights that make it appealing to specific types of campers:

  • Structured Group Camping: With a pavilion and a layout that accommodates multiple campers, Hawks Nest is particularly well-suited for scout troops, youth groups, or large family gatherings.
  • Access to Extensive Activities: A major highlight is the access to the broader "Circle 10 Camp" (likely Camp Constantin, a Boy Scouts of America camp) and its "no shortage of activities on the waterfront." This means opportunities for various aquatic sports, and potentially other camp-specific programs, are readily available.
  • Professional Camp Staff: Reviews praising the "superb" staff indicate that visitors benefit from a well-organized and supportive environment, which is crucial for safety and enjoyment, particularly for youth programs.
  • Functional and Clean Facilities: Despite some walks, the presence of "clean and fairly level" campsites, as well as accessible "nice" restrooms and showers, ensures a comfortable and hygienic stay.
  • Traditional Camp Experience: For those who appreciate a more traditional, organized camp setting rather than a purely primitive or luxurious RV park, Hawks Nest delivers. It offers a structured outdoor adventure.
  • Secluded Setting (within camp): While some sites are treed and lack lake views directly, this provides shade and a sense of being truly immersed in the wooded environment, offering a respite from direct sun and a more "in-the-woods" camping feel.
  • Proximity to Possum Kingdom Lake: Even without direct site access, being in Graford means the beauty and recreation of Possum Kingdom Lake are just a short trip away.

This has to be my least favorite site on my Favorite Circle 10 Camp, especially during summer camp. No access to water and the only view in the beautiful camp on Possum Kingdom Lake is surrounded by trees, which do an excellent job of block what could be a cooling breeze off the lake. As a site itself. The pavilion is very nice and there was a short walk to get to the latrine, and "nice" restrooms and showers were not too far of a walk away. So the take away is, not have water views or access, from our site, on an aquatic based camp, is a bit disappointing. There were obviously other places to fish and no shortage of activities on the waterfront during open time. Camp Constantin, and the staff this summer, we superb in spite of this site.

It's a nice enough campsite. Pavilion is a little on the small side. It is good for a weekend campout but for summer camp it is a long way from the dining hall and the program areas.
