Introduction / Overview
For Minnesota residents who consider a boat their key to unlocking the state's most pristine wilderness, Hinsdale Island Campsite 11 represents a coveted and exceptional destination. As one of only 11 rustic, boat-in campsites scattered across Hinsdale Island within the majestic Kabetogama State Forest, this particular site has earned a reputation among locals as potentially the "Best site on the lake." This acclaim stems from its unique topographical features and exceptional access to the renowned fishing and recreation of Lake Vermilion.
Hinsdale Island Campsite 11 is explicitly a primitive, tent-only camping experience, perfectly suited for the self-reliant Northwoods adventurer. It intentionally foregoes modern conveniences like electricity and running water in favor of a genuine, rugged connection with the environment. The site is part of a cluster of boat-in campsites in the state forest, which are designed to furnish only the most basic needs—a cleared area for tents, a table, and a fire ring. However, Campsite 11 is distinguished by its layout, offering dual-level topography: a secluded lower tent area that provides shelter and a fantastic "great view of morning sunrise," and a higher hill location for an ideal campfire setting. This unique setting, confirmed by seasoned visitors, allows for large groups, as it "Can fit alot of tents," making it ideal for family gatherings or multi-boat fishing trips. It is a genuine piece of Minnesota's natural heritage, available to those willing to put in the effort to reach it by water.
Location and Accessibility
Hinsdale Island Campsite 11 is situated on Hinsdale Island in Lake Vermilion. While the official mailing address is typically associated with the broader area like Tower, MN 55790, USA, its physical location is strictly accessible by boat, deep within the Kabetogama State Forest. This boat-in requirement is central to its appeal, ensuring seclusion and maintaining the low-impact character of the site.
Access to Campsite 11, and the island as a whole, begins at one of the public launch points or private marinas around Lake Vermilion. Local knowledge is a significant asset here, as the journey involves navigating the waters to the island. According to local reviews, the campsite is strategically positioned in a bay, which is critical for secure boat mooring. Visitors report that the natural configuration of the site "Within the bay you can pull and put the boat," sometimes aided by available natural features, allowing for "perfect boat pull in and tie off to a shore tree."
Despite its remote island location, the area around Hinsdale Island is not entirely isolated from civilization. Campers appreciate that the site is in an area of "Heavy boat traffic," which, while sometimes a factor in noise levels, offers the convenience of quickly reaching essential services. Nearby establishments like Retreat Lodge or Timbuktu Marina are "easily get to" and provide necessary supplies such as gas, ice, bait, and other conveniences. This blend of wilderness camping and convenient access to resupply points makes it a uniquely functional spot for extended trips on Lake Vermilion.

Within the bay you can pull and put the boat. While I was there two logs allowed perfect boat pull in and tie off to a shore tree. Great fire location on top of hill while a tent spot at base with a great view of morning sunrise. Keep in mind the top of the hill is windy and is not recommend setting your tent there. We caught bass, perch and walleye just out the bay. Heavy boat traffic area. Can easily get to Retreat Lodge or Timbuktu Marina and both have gas, ice and bait. Timbuktu has cigarettes IF you are looking for those.
