Introduction / Overview
For New Yorkers seeking a unique escape that blends world-class live entertainment with the natural beauty and history of the Catskill Mountains, The Campground at Bethel Woods offers an unparalleled experience. Located on the hallowed grounds of the original 1969 Woodstock festival site, this destination is far more than a typical campground; it is an extension of the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts experience. Open seasonally from May through October, the campground allows concert-goers, festival attendees, and history enthusiasts to turn a single night out into a full, immersive getaway.
The facility is thoughtfully divided into two primary zones: Pavilion Camping (offering premium tent and glamping sites) and the focus of this article, Historic Camping (offering RV and car camping). The entire facility is designed to provide clean, safe, and convenient lodging. Customer reviews consistently highlight the value of staying close, with one guest noting the "super clean bathrooms, toilets and showers," and others praising the convenience of skipping late-night traffic, stating they "highly recommend this over driving home late at night." The campground successfully fuses the legendary atmosphere of the historic site with modern amenities and high-quality guest services, making it a premier camping destination in the New York region.
Location and Accessibility
The campground boasts a spectacular location in the Sullivan Catskills, offering scenic views across the historic campus and surrounding rolling landscape. Its proximity to the main attractions is one of its biggest selling points for local New York residents.
Physical Address:
100 Best Rd, Swan Lake, NY 12783, USA
Accessibility and Proximity:
The Historic Camping section, situated on Best Road, is approximately four-tenths of a mile from the Bethel Woods Pavilion and The Museum at Bethel Woods. This distance is a convenient short walk for most, but the venue also provides solutions for easy travel. While parking is provided directly at the Historic Camping sites, campers have the advantage of a separate, quick access point to the main concert grounds. As one reviewer noted, the proximity is great for events, but guests should be aware that the main concert area is fenced off on non-show days, requiring them to "circumnavigate" for a longer walk to the museum if they arrive early. This minor consideration is easily outweighed by the convenience of staying on-site for concerts.
Travel from NYC Metro Area:
Located roughly 90 miles north of New York City, the Swan Lake area offers a straightforward drive for residents of the five boroughs and surrounding counties, making it an ideal weekend getaway destination. Its position in the Catskills region ensures that visitors are immediately immersed in the relaxing, forested environment that New York State is famous for.
Services Offered
The Campground at Bethel Woods provides a comprehensive suite of services aimed at maximizing guest comfort and convenience, differentiating itself from more primitive campgrounds.

The Campground at Bethel Woods is tailor-made for New York residents, offering a perfect blend of convenience, culture, and nature.
The Ultimate Concert Upgrade: For locals who frequently attend concerts at the Pavilion, staying at the campground is the definitive way to elevate the experience. It transforms a rushed evening of navigating traffic and parking into a relaxing, multi-day musical retreat. As one camper noted, the experience is "fun" and far superior to "driving home late at night."
An Accessible Catskills Escape: The location in the Sullivan Catskills makes it an easily reachable weekend destination from major population centers, providing an immediate immersion into the state’s famous lush, rolling hills. It’s an accessible way for New Yorkers to enjoy the great outdoors without committing to a remote, primitive experience.
History Meets Hospitality: By combining the legendary historic significance of the 1969 site with modern, clean, and well-managed hospitality (from ample space to super clean facilities), the campground delivers a high-value, memorable stay. For any New Yorker looking for a legendary summer adventure, Historic Camping at Bethel Woods is the premier choice.

Lovely campground. Pavilion camping was worth the price to be so close to venue. You’re supposed to move your car after you unpack but some folks left their cars in campsite. Bathrooms and showers were clean and plentiful but a bit of a walk from our site. If you arrive early like we did, it’s a long walk to museum because the concert area is fenced off and closed, so you have to circumnavigate. There were shuttles but a bit of a wait.
Aug 26, 2025 · Jo Ann HickeyOur first time car camping for a concert here. Booking and site selection was easy (though the interactive map could be a bit bigger to select a site). We checked in quickly and were guided to our camp site. Ample space, several drinking water stations, view of the Bethel Woods concert site on the opposite hill. There’s a spot for breakfast/ lunch on site plus a little convenience/ gift shop. Super clean bathrooms, toilets and showers, camp fire and chairs / Picknick tables in distance so not to disturb at night. Fun shuttle and separate entrance / exit to concert event site. Highly recommend this over driving home late at night. Will come back for the next concert.
Jul 26, 2025 · E HeThis was our first time “Car Camping “ at BW and it was absolutely fabulous. The price is great ( you get a 30’x30’ space ) our tent and vehicle fit perfectly. The location is perfect, a short distance from the venue, we could see the venue from our campsite. There are so many positives: All our “neighbors campers” were friendly and cheerful, there are 2 gas fire pits to gather around, there is a shuttle to get you back and forth from the venue, restrooms/ showers were spotless, there is even a Cell Phone Charging Station!! Groovy Grub located on the campground for great breakfast and lunch/ dinner options ( check the hours so you can plan accordingly) and also Groovy Goods for camping staples and gifts. But most of all we want to give a big shout out to the staff. Everyone was so kind, knowledgeable, helpful and welcoming. The crew that greeted us upon arrival, shuttle drivers, the chefs at Groovy Grub, the box office, security who made us safe, the security gentleman who gave me a ride back to our campsite after the Neil Young concert and Bill ( Security) who helped when the battery in our vehicle died today! Note: There were a few fellow campers who stopped by to try and help, we say Thank You. We will most definitely be back, even if it’s not for a concert. Thank you one and all for a wonderful time! My husband, Paul myself and our son Dylan highly recommended staying here. Get back in touch with good vibes 😎
Aug 27, 2025 · Carolann MillerCar Camping at Historic Campsite Bethel Woods is the way to go! Van camping for us - makes the whole concert experience so much easier and more fun. You can chill at the campsite or fire pits to chat to fellow campers, before the show, then hop on the “magic bus” that runs every 30 minutes (and even passes by the historic concert site). The shuttle drops you right at a convenient shuttle only location and picks you up afterward, so there’s no stress about parking, long lines, or late-night driving. Pro tip: rent your lawn chairs online! The pickup line is way shorter, which means more time to grab a snack, enjoy a drink, and scout out that perfect sunny spot on the lawn before the crowds roll in. The ride back is just as entertaining—and best of all, you completely avoid long exit lines or needing a designated driver. The campsite itself is super clean and well set up: restrooms, showers, picnic tables, charcoal grills, and even gas fire pits where you can hang out and meet fellow concert-goers afterwards to share experiences. Definitely worth the price for the convenience, vibe, and overall experience!
Sep 02, 2025 · S OI'm at the car camping sites. Brand new bathrooms and shower bathrooms. New store and breakfast lunch spot which is also open after the show for burgers and such. Awesome hippie shuttle bus to the show and back with entrance just for campers. Awesome experience. Stars at night are terrific. Lawn car campsites 30×30 ft I think. It's and experience.
