This isn't your typical manicured campground; instead, it presents an opportunity to step back in time, reconnect with the land, and enjoy a primitive, authentic outdoor adventure. This article aims to provide local Ohioans with a clear and honest overview of Home Afarm, based on available public information and genuine visitor insights, so you can decide if this unique destination is the right fit for your next natural retreat.
Ohio's diverse outdoor offerings range from bustling state parks with full amenities to serene, secluded spots. Home Afarm falls into the latter category, promising an experience that emphasizes self-reliance and immersion in a natural, less-developed setting. For those who appreciate the raw beauty of the wilderness, enjoy the quiet contemplation of a starry night, and aren't afraid of a bit of rustic living, Home Afarm could be the perfect antidote to modern life. It's an opportunity to discover a different facet of Ohio's natural charm, far from the crowds and closer to the earth.
Location and Accessibility
Home Afarm is nestled at 705 Rankin Rd, Seaman, OH 45679, USA. This address places it in Adams County, in the southern part of Ohio, within the Appalachian foothills and enveloped by the Tranquility Wilderness Area. For Ohio residents, reaching Home Afarm might involve a drive through more rural landscapes than some other campgrounds. Reviewers have noted that the approach involves a "long driveway/road that starts bumpy but eventually disappears to gravel." This suggests that while it is accessible, visitors should be prepared for a rustic entrance, potentially with thicker trees and a narrower road. While some visitors might find the journey "a little spooky" due to the secluded nature and presence of older structures, it's essential to understand that this is part of the primitive charm. The location offers excellent dark sky stargazing opportunities, benefiting from minimal light pollution. It's advisable for visitors to arrive during daylight hours to navigate the entrance comfortably and appreciate the setting. Proximity to tiny towns means basic supplies might be available nearby, but it's wise to come prepared with most of your necessities.
Services Offered
Home Afarm embraces a "very primitive" and "low frills camping" philosophy, emphasizing self-sufficiency and an off-grid experience. Based on available information, here are the services and amenities you can expect:
- Primitive Campsites: The core offering is primitive camping, with sites spaced for privacy. These sites typically include a fire ring and a picnic table.
- "Electric Only" Campsites: While not the primary focus, some reviews suggest that certain sites might offer basic electric hookups, possibly on the exterior of a main house or cabin, suitable for charging small items. This would likely be for specific RV/tent sites at the front of the property.
- Outdoor Shower: An outdoor shower is available, described as "so cool" by one reviewer. It is seasonal, open from the last date of frost in spring through the first date of frost in autumn, and is updated with recycled materials and a reliable propane Camplux shower for hot water. It operates off a rainwater collection system.
- Outhouse/Porta-Potty: Restroom facilities are primitive, consisting of an outhouse or porta-potty, depending on the number of campers. Guests should expect a rustic bathroom experience.
- Water Access: Water is sourced from a 1,000-year-old cistern or a local spring near Serpent Mound. This means visitors should be prepared for non-municipal water and potentially bring their own drinking water if preferred. Water is available by the gallon for purchase.
- Fresh Eggs: As a farm, fresh eggs are available for purchase, offering a delightful local amenity.
- Swimming Pond: There is a quarter-acre swimming pond where visitors can take a refreshing dip. The pond is also noted to have catfish and bluegill for fishing.
- Outdoor Kitchen Area: A camp kitchen is available with a sink, counters, and multiple grills, allowing campers to prepare outdoor feasts.
- Firewood: Campers can gather deadfall from the woods for fires, or purchase cut cord wood by the bundle.
- Pet-Friendly: Home Afarm is pet-friendly, with pets welcome for an additional fee per pet/per booking. They must be leashed/under control at all times.
- Cottage Rental: In addition to campsites, Home Afarm offers a cottage rental, described as a "one room cottage" with a queen bed, full over full bunk bed, and a blue flame fireplace. It has a galley kitchen with cookware and dishes, but no running water inside the cottage (a sink drains to a greywater bucket). This offers a slightly less primitive option.
Features / Highlights
- Primitive and Back-to-Basics Experience: The primary highlight is its raw, authentic camping experience. It's for those who truly want to unplug and get away from modern conveniences.
- Naturist-Friendly: One review mentions "People are naturist," suggesting it is a welcoming environment for those who prefer clothing-optional experiences. This is a significant feature that sets it apart.
- Dark Sky Stargazing: Located in a dark sky zone within the Tranquility Wilderness Area, Home Afarm offers "fantastic views of the starry sky on clear nights." This is a major draw for astronomers and nature lovers.
- Fresh Farm Produce: The availability of fresh eggs from the farm adds a unique, local, and wholesome touch to the stay.
- Swimming Pond: The presence of a swimming hole/pond provides a refreshing way to cool off and enjoy water-based recreation on-site.

Customer Reviews
Very cool but very primitive. People are naturist, water from 1,000 year old cistern, fresh eggs available, swimming hole, outdoor shower(only), outhouse. Enjoyed it.
We didn’t stay, it could be nice but we didn’t want to chance it (some weird vibes). It was just outside of a tiny, tiny town. It is a long driveway/road that starts bumpy but eventually disappears to gravel. The trees also got much thicker and road narrowed and there were multiple dilapidated buildings and overgrown cars in the trees. We passed a cemetery and “Tranquility Tabernacle” and it was getting darker outside and it was a little spooky. Especially, when you get to the end of the gravel road and you’re in front of somebody’s house and don’t see any camping. Again, not sure, but it almost seemed like somebody was just renting out their front lawn and a side cabin.
Friendly people, beautiful nature, couldn't ask for a better rustic getaway.
Gorgeous property, can see the sky really well on a clear night. Cool hosts with a cool dog
