Promotions or Special Offers

As a Michigan State Recreation Area, Ionia State Recreation Area Campground operates under the standardized pricing structure of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Direct promotions or temporary discounts for individual campsites are generally not common. However, there are systemic "offers" or cost-saving opportunities relevant to Michigan residents:

  • Recreation Passport: This is the primary "promotion" for Michigan residents. For a low annual fee added to your vehicle registration, the Recreation Passport grants unlimited vehicle access to all Michigan state parks and recreation areas, including Ionia. This is often the most cost-effective way for locals to enjoy the parks frequently. Non-residents can purchase a daily or annual pass at the park entrance.
  • Standardized Camping Fees: Camping fees are set by the Michigan DNR and vary by site type (electric, rustic, equestrian) and season. These rates are generally considered "great price" by visitors compared to private campgrounds. It is always best to check the official Michigan DNR Reservations website (MiDNRReservations.com) for the most current pricing and availability.
  • Cabin Closure/Renovation Discounts (Seasonal): It's important to note that due to a planned enhancement project to upgrade the toilet and shower building, sanitation station, drain field, and park's electrical system, the modern campground and cabins at Ionia State Recreation Area will be closed from May 1 to October 31, 2025. While this is a temporary closure, future renovation periods at state parks might sometimes coincide with reduced rates for available sections, though no such offer is currently linked to Ionia's 2025 closure.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on fees, availability, and any potential system-wide specials, Michiganders should always refer to the official Michigan DNR website or use the MiDNRReservations.com portal for booking.

Beautiful campground and well kept. Great price. The beach is nice with plenty of parking, decent pricing on food, a firepit anyone can use right on the beach. Cute shaded area. Down side is the path to get to the rail trail (for non-mountain bikes) is not easy to ride and about 2 miles from campsites; sites are close; hard to fund a large dump bin that's close; needs to be more bike friendly on main roads

Ionia State Park is a great place to camp. Centrally located if you live in south central Michigan. The staff is very friendly. There are lots of Cottonwood trees so in the early summer it’s everywhere. The sites are private feeling with brushy growth between the sites for privacy. There are some great hiking trails. This past winter’s storms knocked some trees down but nothing is impassable. A lot of the trail markers are gone or illegible and need replacing. It is easy to get disoriented and take a much longer walk than anticipated. The bathrooms need an update as well. They are clean enough but out dated. Hot water is limited and on occasion there is a sewer smell near the bathhouse. As is I would not hesitate to return. Updated it will be that much better.

This is a nice park. The lake is pretty spacious and they offer kayaking, which is what me and my friends did. One thing that was concerning was the water quality. It stated that the water quality was not tested, yet there was a swimming area. In parts of the lake in which we kayaked, the water did seem very swampy. But like I said, it was quite a large lake. There were also some decent food options in the concession stands, which is nice. I would like to come back and check out the campground some day. Overall, this is a good recreational area that offers a lot.

We have camped here over 20 years both on the modern side and the equestrian side. Most of the campsites are shaded and are more private than other camps we have gone through. There is a very nice beach, walking trails and fishing area. The horse side does not have electricity but has some great trails to ride. There's a bridge to cross and a stream if you want to cross. You can pick how far you want to go on the maps provided. There are some sites with corrals for the horses, or you can tie the horses. There is also a nice day staging area, an arena, and an obstacle course. Both sides are well maintained. The online site shows the site and has a very good description. The only thing we have found fault with this campground is that they do not have a great area for the kids to play. There's a couple of swings and a sandbox. It is in a nice area with some trees. The campground is very close to ionia, which makes it convenient to run to town to pick up things. Dogs are welcome, generators on the horse side, but shut off at night.

This is a great place to stay for camping, they have the standard camping ground with electricity and water for tents or RV's. They also have the rustic camp ground with no water, no electricity, no showers, thus is where my son and I stay from Friday to Sunday and it was great, by the lake, with a picnic table and a fireplace. They also have an area for private cabins which looks amazing. We did the trails and it's awesome 3.2 miles long, also bike trails (green, yellow and black) . The beach area is amazing. Definitely we will come back.
